You can still find training pants. Try wal mart in the baby care items. The pants have the thicker crotch and bottom area. Good luck! Way to go granny! Shannon G.
I am curious. I watch my little grandson and mama has been slow about getting us set up for potty training. I think he has been ready for months. He says pee- poop and his diapers are barely damp but will not sit on the toilet. It freaks him out big time.
I don't want to turn him off so I took it upon myself and purchased a used potty chair/ toilet to use. Now I wionder if they mstill make training pants like I used on my boys. Cotton pull ups with a very thick panel to hold the peepee or is all I can get the disposable pull ups? I don't have an issue with washing his unders. I am just scared (and know from the past) that big boy unders won't hold much fluid and I don't want everything I have ruined.
Can anyone help? Is there maybe a pattern for making my own even?
I plan on speaking with her again. I did buy him the potty and he makes a big deal of going in and sitting on it when I go. He like it. He hasn't used it just yet but we did take the diaper off. I know she has a potty chair at home and has been wanting to try him out. I know some of the reason for going slow on her part she wants to get the pull ups and hasn't had the extra cash to do so. She would think using the reuseable training pants too much of a bother. She's into the easiest way possible.
I did check out Walmart on Monday and did not find them but maybe I didn't look in the right place. BTW I am in the Cincinnati area just 8 miles north of the Ohio River.

They sell cotton gerber training pants at Walmart , they also sell vinyl covers to go over the training pants to protect from leaks. They cost about $6.85 for a pack of three. On ebay they sell many varieties of cloth training pants and they also sell sewing patterns for training pants.
Walmart sells cloth training pants that you can find in the baby section. Haven't used them.... but thought about it a number of times... except that they are about $6 for two or three pairs.
Not sure where you live in the area...but JC Penny's OUTLET - located at the desolate Rolling Acres Mall has them Cheap! I think 3 pairs for 3.99? maybe cheaper? and also I've seen the plastic pants that go over them at Big Lots! I have 4 boys and none have even showed interest till atleast 3 years old!
Good Luck -
Bargain Shopper!
I found the thick Gerber training pants at our local Target in the baby aisle along with baby socks etc. Good luck!
I see that you already have several responses for training pants, so I don't need to comment on that. But, does everyone agree that a boy that just turned 2 is "slow" in getting potty trained? I started with my daughter at 18 months (due to her readiness) and it still took over a year before she was consistently going in toilet. My son also turned 2 in February. He'll go on the toilet sometimes, but most of the time he's not at all interested. The doc says it's perfectly normal... What are others' thoughts?
Hi! Google cloth diapers. Most websites that sell cloth diapers also sell training pants.
They still make those thick training pants, yes. And to avoid leaks on furniture, they also make plastic covers to go over them. If you don't want to use the pullups, I'd suggest the above route. Check at Walmart & Kmart, I know they're sold there.
Hi C.,
You can still buy the thick training pants at wal-mart. They are about $6 for three pairs. I tried the vinyl coated washable gerber training pants with my daughter a few months ago, and the elastic was VERY tight and uncomfortable for her. She too started showing signs of rediness, we learned after a few days that she isnt quite ready.
As for training your grandson on your own.......I would be very careful about starting the potty training on your own without speaking to the mother about it. I just believe that it could cause ill feelings, even though you have the best intentions.
I actually use Gerber brand thicker underwear for my son who is 3 years old. Even though he is potty trained, he still dampens himself if he doesn't get to the bathroom on time. I am pretty sure Babies R Us or Target sells them. Here is a link http://www.clothdiaper.com/sitemap/gerber-training-pants.htm
Good luck!
check "hanna anderson" online
Gerber makes the training pants you are talking about. I got mine at Babies R Us. I put a pair of regular plastic pants (from Walmart)on over it, and the two helped keep most in. I'd stay away from the Gerber All-in-One training pants with the thicker center and waterproof outer - they were so poof-y and leaked more than the 2 separate.
they have cotton, thicker underwear out there for training, but he will pee right thru them. If you are looking for a no mess solution to accidents, i believe the only thing to get would be the disposable pull ups. Also I see they still sell plactic pants. You can try regular underwear with the plastic pants over them and see if that would hold in the mess. I went straight from diapers to underwear. That did the trick for some reason. Except #2....isn't grasping the concept of #2 on the potty. All indue time
You can still purchase cotton training pants. I purchased some at Wal-Mart but I bet Meier would have them also. In my opinion, it is impossible to potty train using Pull-ups. These are just overpriced diapers and are best used for night time until a child can remain dry.
Don't be too anxious about the potty training. 2 years old is still young and maybe this grandson needs a little more time.
Hi C.,
Gerber makes cotton training pants that have a thick panel. They come in three sizes: 18 months (24-28 lbs., 30-32 in.), 24 months (28-32 lbs., 32-34 in.) and 3T (32-35 lbs., 34-38 in.) They come in packs of three. They are sometimes difficult to find though. I think the ones I have came from Meiers. Hope that helps.

Hi C..
My son turned two in Feb. also, and he is not quite ready for potty training yet. He says pee and poopoo but I'm not sure that he has the control yet to be able to potty train. If you start potty training your grandson at your house and he is not training at home, you are going to confuse him about when it is okay to go potty in his pants. If my mother-in-law started potty training my son on her own I would be very unhappy. I think that if you think he is ready you should discuss it with her and you should both be on the same page. As for the training pants, I know you can buy them online at Cloth Diaper websites - just google them.
Best wishes!
B.
I have not seen any type of training pants like that in the stores but they may still have them out there somewhere. I use the disposable ones and they aren't bad at all. They have sides that are taped and when the child goes potty they can just undo each side and then when they are done going potty they can re-tape the sides. They are made to be taken off and put back on. They are nice and I used them on all of my kids.

I am 31 and have been married for almost 12 yrs. My husband and I have 3 boys ages 10,7 and 4.
I agree with the mom who said you need to be consistent with what his mom is doing or willing to do. Maybe she thinks he's not ready, so you can compare notes and she could agree to try. I know my kids were very aware of their diaper (and its contents) for about a year before they were actually ready to be potty trained. They knew what the toilet was for, knew all "big kids" used the potty, and knew when they were going. But they had no interest in using the potty themselves. We read the book "Toilet Training in Less than a Day", tried it with our son at 27 months and daughter at 25 months, and they would have nothing to do with it even though they knew very well what we were trying to do. We went back to diapers for a couple months and then tried again, and my son was all but trained the first day (we struggled a little longer with bowel movements). We just used regular underwear. Within the first week, he didn't have any more potty accidents (I think he had a couple accidents the first day or two and that was it), and within the first month he didn't have any bowel accidents. We did keep diapers on him at night for quite a while, though. Our daughter mirrored our son almost exactly, but she's had a few more accidents. We also never used a potty chair. We tried with our son for a little while and he wouldn't sit on it with his pants down. We ended up getting a seat that attaches to a regular toilet (can be flipped up when adults need to use it) and a stool. Both of my kids seem to perfer that, and you don't have to empty it. :)
All that rambling is to say that for me it was easiest to wait until my kids were willing to be potty trained, and it could be consistent all the time (I actually held off with my daughter so I didn't have to be distracted by watching other kids or head off to work mid-way through training). If your daughter-in-law is o.k. with it, maybe you could try to method I mentioned (you can get the book at a library) and potty train your grandson for her. I'm sure she would thank you if she was prepared for it!
I am also a 52 year old grandma of a 2 year old boy. And I started trying to potty train him. I got him the thick training pants with and without elastic. I believe I got them at Walmart and Target. Supposedly, pullups are not good for potty training because they absorb too well and kids don't care if they pee in them. They do have a pullup now that turns cold when peed in, but they are pretty expensive. Good luck.
they sell these plastic ones and cotton ones at walmart/kmart/target

NEVER use the disposable ones... they are not worth the money or pain.....kids are not stupid!!!
Best of luck.
I believe Gerber makes heavily lined cotton training-type underwear. I think they also make the plastic covers for them, but they advise parents/grandparents/caregivers to be careful not to ever leave any of these on too long if they are wet, due to the fact that air does not circulate through the plastic cover and a child can easily get a rash. It sounds like you definitely wouldn't leave on too long, since you are going to be watching him frequently to see if there is an accident. Good luck!
I know that Babies R Us sells training pants. They have the thick cotton ones with a plastic cover attached, and they sell the plastic covers separately.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
I don't know where but you can get the thicker unddies. People have mentioned the plastic over pants. I would recommend not using them unless they are lined. the ones I have seen are not they are just plastic and the pee puddles in them and as you take them off it all runs on the floor or thier clothes causing a bigger mess than you would of had. I have worked in a state licensced daycare for 8 years and absolutly do not think he is too young to start introducing the potty even if he does not use it. I work in the 2 year old room and have never had a child move to the 3 yo room in diapers!! But remeber not to scold for accidents and give big praise for doing it right. diffrent things work for diffrent kids we have tried: getting a stamp (ink) when they go, special stickers, rewards for allday or all week dry. maybe let him watch grandpa or another male family member or even you. they make many potty books and movies but i have never used any of them I know some families have at home. One mom did mention the potty seat that goes on your big potty ours does not attach we just sit it on and off. It is much cleaner and easier then they also get used to sitting the right place so you don't have to retrain them as they grow (these seats are around $10 at walmart and have various characters...elmo, thomas, bob builder) they also come with a pee guard which is great for young boys!!
I do agree you should be on the same page with mom but maybe she needs a nudge it is not about what is easy for us. if she thinks he is not ready for undies you can countinue at your house keeping him in diapers and taking him to sit on potty with out his diaper every 30-40 minutes. he will get the idea and with the diapers these days you can put it right back on if it is still clean so no extra wasted diaper expense. hope this helped some and best of luck!!! Oh and something to check on I have not but a parent told me if you divide out the per diaper cost pull-ups are cheaper just a thought you could look into.
I am in northern Indiana and when I was working with my son on it we had to order them online. Since then I have gotten some for my daughter (just starting with her) at stores, I have seen them at Meijers, Wal-mart, and maybe one of the drug stores? Can't remember, I know that I have seen tehm at least 3 places here locally. I also just got some swim diapers for her so that she doesn't have to wear the little swimmer type disposables. Those I did have to buy online. Oh, and by the way, you might have to look around for them, they aren't always with the diapers or with the underwear. I've also seen them in bath type stuff for some reason. I know that gerber puts some out and I'm not sure if there are any other brands to choose from.
I just checked on ebay (my resource for nearly everything lol) and GERBER makes a cotton training pant with a vinyl cover that are machine washable. They have it listed at $6.95 for a two-pack. I just typed in "cotton training pants" in the ebay search.
Good luck!
As the mother of 4 children, age 6-19, it is my experience that pull-ups do not help with potty training. Kids aren't dumb, they are just diapers that can be taken down. If they are too busy to go to the potty, they don't have to. Just go in your pull-up. No one I have spoke to had good luck with pull-ups either.
I agree you need to talk to the mom and make sure she doesn't mind you potty-training her son. She may be wanting someone to do it, and just not ready to tackle it herself.
Most boys aren't ready to be potty-trained until they are 3 yrs. old, but there are exceptions. Good luck to you. I found when my boys were ready to be potty-trained, it happened quickly. Summmertime is a great time, you can let them run around outside and if they have an accident, they see what happens when they don't control the pee, and the mess is outside.
Good luck,
R.
C.,
I think it is wonderful that you watch your grandson. It is so important for children to have that special bond with grandma and grandpa.
However, your grandson is not even two and a half yet, so on average, he's not slow in training; and if his mother has not done anything to get things started, you need to talk to her first. Especially since you admit that he gets freaked out about sitting on the toilet. (Unless you've talked to her and received her permission to do this, and didn't mention it in your post.) But that should be your first step, so as not to step on any toes, and make sure his mom is on the same page as you. Otherwise it will only make it traumatic on your grandson, if you and his mom get into a "tug of war", so to speak.
And, as the other mamas wrote, they do have the thicker pants at K-mart, should you and his mom decide that's what to do.
Good luck. J.
Yes, they do still make training pants but unfortunately they are a lot harder to find them they used to be and perhaps not quite as thick either. But, I do believe you can find them at some Wal-Marts still as well as on websites that are devoted to toilet training.
