Toxic Shock Symptoms

I forgot I was wearing a tampon and went to bed. I had it in for over 12 hours. I just woke up severely nauseated. I don't want to be an alarmist, so I was wondering if anyone has had Toxic Shock Syndrome and what signs I should look for. I read on line about it but I don't know what to do. My husband's deployed and finding someone to watch my kids is a HUGE pain so I don't want to go to the doctor unless it's absolutely necessary. Thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Woke up later with a fever of 100. All day I just kind of kept an eye on things and I'm finally feeling better. Thanks for all of the responses, it's nice to have input from others. :)

I had it! Thought I was gonna die. It wasnt from having the tampon in too long tho, I did that plenty of times... with no repercussions.
My symptoms were my whole body got sore, I couldnt move my joints at all without excrutiating pain. My husband had to carry me to the car. I was in the hospital for 4 days, had to be fed because I couldnt put a spoon to my mouth. I totally forget what drug they put me on, it was an IV tho... I guess I was lucky, it was in the 80's when it was first discovered as a syndrome and there wasnt a lot known about it. Anyway, that's what they guessed I had. I wasnt on my period when it happened it was about a week after the fact.
Anyway, my symptoms were the same as rheumatoid arthritus and I think they had me on heavy anti inflammatory drugs.

Many people in the medical field think that TSS comes from the absorption of the bleach that the material in the tampon is cleaned with. Some people are more susceptible than others. Removal of the tampon is first prevention. They now sell organic tampons. The nausea could simply come from your period. I wouldn't stress but just keep an eye on how you feel.....

Hope you fell better soon!

Well... it is my time of the month and last night I went 12 hours too. Actually that happens to me a lot on the over night. Was the tampon "full" or party dry? My doc has said that as long as it is full 12 hours is not a problem.

I would call your Gyn and ask just to be on the safe side, but I would not worry too much.

i've worn tampons for 12 hours before with absolutely no issue, and i could be WAY wrong, but i was thinking TSS was more for a really prolonged period of time(like over a day). best thing you can do is CALL your ob/gyn, they will tell you if you need to be seen or not. good luck!

eta: also, i'm pretty sure the BIG tipoff is a high fever. if you have a fever/chill/body aches, you prob DO need to be seen. to let your body "breathe" if you are concerned, wear a pad the rest of the day today.

I too have worn tampons overnight and not had issue, so I'm betting you're probably okay. Do you still feel ill? Do you have any other symptoms? Reading on-line is a blessing and a curse I think! Sometimes it just freaks you out more! If you are not exhibiting any other symptoms I would say no reason to be seen, otherwise call your doctor's office or a nurse line and ask what they think.

TSS from having a tampon in to long is very rare. your nausea would be accompanied by a high fever for a full list of symptoms your tampon box should include a pamplet with instructions on how to use the tampon on the back of that should be a warning about tss

wehn i was 18 i had a tampon in for days, I had forgotten about it! How I figured it out was there was an awful smell... I was fine, no tss or anything. My dr told tss is much more rare these days as the tampons have improved. Also I don't know about your area but around here in Pa the stomach virus has been going around, I had it 2 days ago and my daughter had it 2 days b4 that. My brother and sister in law who lives in Orlando fl also had it last week.

I think you're fine unless you have a fever. Feel better.

I hate to admit this, but several years ago I was at the very end of my period, and I had forgotten about the last tampon (and I had cut the string shorter so it wouldn't bother me) and it was in for at least two weeks. A month later I had my regular yearly exam and I asked my doctor about being worried about TSS and he said it's very rare these days, and I wouldn't worry about it. Nothing ever happened to me.
