Tooth Fairy Rate

My 7 year old just lost his tooth this morning. Can anyone tell me how much money the tooth fairy is leaving for teeth these days? He's my first, so I have no idea. He tells me some kids get $5! Is that for the first tooth or is that the going rate for all teeth? What happened to 25 cents for a tooth!

Any thoughts please.
Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your great responses and ideas. We decided to do $5.00 and he was happy when he woke up this morning! I'm going to explain to him that going forward it will be $1.00/tooth and that the first is the special one. I think the coins are also a great idea too!

Thanks again!

DD2 got $5 and a couple of lip glosses (she was happier about the lip gloss) for the first tooth only - a very special occasion. After that, rates come way down to maybe a dollar. I've got two losing teeth by the week and Miss Tooth Fairy doesn't want to go broke!

I always go with something cool like a dollar coin, or, for the first one, a $2 bill. My daughter has lost so many now, I keep a few dollar coins stashed away just in case!

the going rate for the tooth is (really) 5 dollars for the first tooth and 1 or 2 dollars for each one after that. THe kids at my school talk about this alot and thats what we did for our now 11 year old. Hard to believe we used to get quarters and 1/2 dollars!

Hi K.,
I had heard that some kids get $5 as well. I give my daughter who is also 7yrs $1 a tooth. Im thinking $5 is a little steep. She seems to be fine with the dollar. I think if she asked for 5 i'd tell her that the tooth fairy gave me a discount.:)

Hi K.,

When my 7 year old lost his first tooth, we gave him 25 cents because that is what we remembered we got. It turns out, most kids get at least $1 per tooth. Some of my friends give $5 for the first one. We are just now staying with $1. My son is fine with that, no complaints. I think that it should be an amount that you are comfortable with.

Good luck,

Some people we know even give $10! We leave one of everything. A penny, nickel, dime, quarter and a dollar bill.

25 cents a tooth is what we do, and I think it's appropriate for this age range. I've never heard of anyone going over $1 per tooth. You can check with parents of his classmates, but if you are comfortable with 25 cents, then you should stick with that.

We give a dollar coin for each tooth. I went to the bank and stocked up on them. He loves getting the "gold coins"

Another idea that I heard of, after the tooth fairy started visiting our house, so I could use it myself - was to have the tooth fairy write a VERY small note and leave with the coin. You could type it on your computer in a small font size.

Our family tooth fairy never did money. She did presents and each one was generally a book on a subject that child liked to read about. It was great!! and one I hope to continue when the time comes in our family.

We asked around and though there are some fairies leaving fives, and others leaving an additional dollar for every tooth, most are leaving $1. That's what we did, and our daughter was thrilled. Seems there's not as much conversation about the amount she leaves as there is about the fact that she comes at all!

I'd say it depends on what he's going to do with the money. If it's his to spend immediately, then $2 is fine. Twenty-five cents would buy a chocolate bar when I was getting money for my teeth: $2 will buy one now (with change), so that's inflation taken care of.

If you want to teach him a little about handling money, you could give him the $5 he claims that "everyone" is getting, but the extra would go into a savings account (or a nice box!) to be accrued for some bigger, long-term goal.

My son gets a special coin or bill. He has received a "golden" coin (the one dollar coin) & a 2 dollar bill before - just something special & different.

My daughter lost her first tooth last week. I also asked around.
I gave $5.00 for the first tooth and let her know it was the first and special. I will drop down to $1.00 per tooth for the rest.

Our kids have gotten $1 per tooth all along. However, we try to give them the dollar coins to make it more special. If we don't have any, we just roll up a nice new dollar bill (again, if we have one)into a thin tube to make it seem more special. Our kids don't get any allowance, and generally earn any money they get (e.g. return the bottles and keep the deposits), so any "free" money is welcomed by them-even a dollar!
