Tooth Fairy - Winston Salem,NC

Just wondering what the going rate is for a visit from the Tooth Fairy. Is there a bigger "payment" for the first tooth than the others? What do you do? When I was little I would get a quarter under the pillow - one quarter no matter the tooth. It has been a very long time since I was little! Has there been a pay raise for the tooth fairy?

What can I do next?

For my childs first tooth the "tooth fairy" left a small gift and for every tooth after that she gets a dollar. It seems to work out well and she gets to spend her money however she wants to. It has also taught her how to save money rater than just spend it.

A dollar works around here, although once my son lost two at once and went on and on about what a big payload that should bring, so he got a few dollars. If you start off with a lot for the first one, that might set a precedent, so she expects that every time.

We do $1 per tooth. I have my children put their tooth in a snack size zip lock bag and put it under their pillow. When they fall asleep I slip a crisp new $1 bill in the zip lock bag and take the tooth. The first tooth they lose also gets a little decorative tooth box that they can keep on their dresser.

hi, i have heard of people giveing 5,10, 20,dollars and up. i think that is crazy. kids today are toooo spoiled. we gave 1 dollar for the first and then just a little pocket change after that. they never complained. call me old fashion but sometimes that is better them making them think the world is all about them and no one else. good luck. i guess a lot of people will think i am a stick in the mud but, they are turning out just fine. blessings, mom of 7, R.

I think most people leave a dollar now.

A few moms I know, get those 'gold' (Sacajawea) dollars just for that purpose, to make it kind of 'special' I guess.

Hi R.,
My 6 yr old just lost a tooth on Christmas day. We usually put her tooth in a fancy cup of water and set it on the table. In the morning she finds the tooth is gone but the water has glitter in it. The TF also puts change in the cup of water like quarters, dimes or even dollar coins. It usually amounts between 1 and 2 dollars. She also leaves a note telling her: "congratulations on losing another tooth! You are so brave for pulling it out all by yourself." Or: "You are so brave for pulling your tooth out at school. I bet that was exciting to show your friends on the bus! Love, The Tooth Fairy She also sprinkles glitter on her note on the table and in my daughters room on her night stand once in a while. She gets so excited knowing the tooth fairy was checking on her in her room. We have 2 girls so that's been our TF tradition. For boys glitter may be too girly :) HOpe this helps and good luck!

R.,
At our house the Tooth Fairy brings $1 bill folded up like a triangle (think table top football) and a little something, sugar free gum, new toothbrush, etc... sometimes it is little gifts... depending on what the 'stash' is.. it could be stickers, note cards etc...

We have a special place to put the tooth too... also if you plan to save them... you need a STASH to hide them...

Due to inflation the going rate for tooth fairy money is one to two dollars per tooth.

Just like running a business or setting holiday traditions, the tooth fairy 'rate-per-tooth' is set according to your personal family income, values and standards! Some people give a quarter and some give $10 (which I personally think would be crazy!) Somewhere between 25 cents and a dollar, I'd think (or maybe one of the gold dollars). If one tooth loss was partitularly stressful or exciting, maybe give more, but if you give more just because it's the first tooth you probably should write a note (from the tooth fairy) saying that this is a special occasion so that the kids won't always expect that amount! LOL

R., It is getting close to time for me to be the tooth fairy too. I think I'm going to go with a a fifty cent piece or a dollar (not sure yet)per tooth and try to use the oppertunity to teach my kids a little bit about money and saving. The tooth fairy gave a quarter when I was a kid, I know kids who got a note from the tooth fairy as well, discussing tooth care... I also knew a kid who got a note about a special surprise or outting she and her mom were going to do together in honor of her "growing up" with every lost tooth.

I think it's up to you, but I would try to incorporate a sense of value... I know a kid who gets $5 a tooth, she's a brat and is very unappreciative, but her parents give her what she wants and she doesn't have any chores etc... I just think $5 is a little much for losing a tooth.

I got a quarter, too when I was growing up. For my son, he got 10 quarters per tooth, except for his very last baby tooth when he got 100 quarters (and a very nice glittery letter from the Tooth Fairy bidding him a fond farewell and a hope that he will always take good care of his teeth). The coins made it seem like a lot more treasure, and he always enjoyed feeding them into his piggy bank.

I'm not sure of T. going rate, however, T. tooth fairy always leaves shiny golden dollar coins under our pillows. A 1st tooth would earn an extra coin. :)

With four children, I've found it helpful to keep a few coins on hand throughout T. years. Just stash them in a jewelry box or desk drawer for easy access, also keep an extra one tucked in your purse if you will be traveling on vacation (learned that one T. hard way). You can get T. gold dollars at your bank, and usually T. automatic stamp dispenser at T. postoffice as change after a purchase. Again, not sure if T. rate is standard but each of my children treasure their little collections of gold coins.

When my son was little (he is now 19), we would give him a Kennedy half dollar for any tooth. Now I understand it has gone to a dollar or more! It also depends on the tooth, be it a molar or front tooth. I am not much help but I don't think you are going to get away with the quarter anymore! I would set a price and just go with it. Maybe due to inflation, I would go with the dollar! LOL! Can't wait to hear what other people say about this! Good luck!

Like other readers have mentioned we also went with the gold dollar coin. Somewhere I heard that another parent made up a cute little story about the tooth fairy comes and takes the tooth and goes back to fairy land and uses the tooth to build a castle made out of teeth.

I have heard of other tooth fairies giving more, but you have to be careful. When my son lost his first tooth he was so excited he told our neighbor. I told them our tooth fairy was going to bring a gold dollar. Our neighbor shared a story about how when they were in college they worked as a counselor one summer and one of the children lost a tooth and all the counselors wanted to chip in and help the tooth fairy and the kid got a really nice amount from the tooth fairy and told all the other kids at camp about it. When word got out - several of the other children started pulling their teeth out! The tooth fairy only left a nickel for the children who pulled their teeth out. There was a lot of disappointment the next day, but they did not have any more kids pulling good teeth out.

It is always exciting to start these traditions with our children. I also gave each of my children a little handmade tooth fairy pillow similar to the one my great grandmother gave me when I was little. My son recently lost his last baby tooth a few weeks back. Good luck.

I'm not sure what the going rate is, either. However, I wanted to share an idea I read about online: tooth fairy money! A mom had taken some glitter glue and smeared it on the money so that it sparkled. Isn't that cool?!?!?

My son just lost his first tooth and we gave him a $2 bill. We had planned on the other teeth to get the gold dollar but he lost his 2nd tooth 4 days later and we weren't prepared so he got another $2 bill. He cherishes his bills and won't spend them. I don't know what we are going to follow up with yet. Luckly no more loose teeth right now. He also had a great time decorating his envelope to put under his pillow. The tooth fairy left the tooth....she already has enough. He keeps them in an old pill bottle so he can see them. Have fun discovering your tradition

Hi R.,
We have upped it to the golden dollar coins. It's exciting for our little one to find a golden coin under her pillow in the morning! We tell her that as long as she takes good care of her teeth the Tooth Fairy will keep bringing gold to trade.

There are many that give $1-$20 per tooth, I am more of a traditionalist and don't think it should be about the dollar amount but about the memories. I used to get $.50 cent piece when I was little and now as a mom my husband and I are going to give $.50 piece as well. When it is a molar they will get a $2 bill. Something different that they can save. I saved all my $.50 cent pieces and will give the same ones to our children. I went to the bank and got several awaiting the moment soon to come!
