Too Early for a Twin Bed?

My daughter will be two next month. they have great deals on pillow top mattresses at this one store right now. She's in her crib still and i wanted to know if it'd be too early to put her in a twin bed that's low to the ground, she's getting her own room so i've been getting her new furniture. :))

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She's slept on beds before at my cousins house and whatnot. She's honestly never tired to get out of her crib. She just stands up and throws her stuffed animals out and says get up mommy lol. that's about it. I was going to do that actually, put it on the floor 1st. I just wonder if she'll actually stay...I'm going to test it out tho.

I would suggest getting a portable railing for the bed. It has two "legs" that you tuck under the mattress to hold it in place. I used one, and it worked great.

I moved my girls at 16 mos and 19 mos old and they both did great with the transition. I think waiting too long causes more problems honestly.

If your daughter is perfectly happy in her crib, why would you want to change things and pull her out? Don't try to change things that aren't broken! Sales come and go -- you'll find a good sale again in the future.

I would say go for it... we moved my daughter to a twin bed shortly after her 2nd birthday. I did purchase a railing (it is long and mesh) because my daughter likes to feel "inclosed" like in her crib (she is 3 1/2 years old and we still have the railing on). She still talks about her big girl bed and is very proud that she has one.

You may have to go in and put her back in bed the first week, but kids usually get the idea pretty quickly :) Best of luck on the transition!

I moved my kids to toddler beds with side rails when they were two years old. I would have loved to keep them in the cribs but they were climbing out by their 2nd birthday.

I didn't do twin beds because 1. I was concerned they would roll out of a regular bed - the toddler beds have side rails and are really close to the ground, and 2. I hadn't potty trained them yet - this way I could continue to use the crib mattresses until we got through potty training.

My kids are turning 5 tomorrow - and we just finally ordered twin beds for them. We intended to do it last year but we moved to a new house and didn't have the funds. Luckily - they still fit in those toddler beds! My daughter was potty trained shortly after she turned two (she was about 27 months) but she did have a few night time accidents when we initially stopped with the pull-ups at bedtime (this was when she was about 2-1/2). So we went back to night time pull-ups with her until she was 3. My son didn't potty train until after he turned 3 and we didn't stop with pull-ups for him until closer to age 4. So he has never had any accidents.

If you do go with a twin bed - I suggest you get those removable side rails to use until she is a little bit older.

My daughter went into her bed (a queen platform bed) at 2 and it went well. She was ready and helped pick the bed out. My son is 2 1/2 and still in his crib. I think it just depends on the child. Kids do a lot of flip flopping at that age, so if she does get a bed you need to protect her from falling out. We still line my 5 year old's bed with stuffed animals on both side of her b/c otherwise she ends up on the ground. I think as long as the bed is low to the ground there is no need to worry. Just make sure if she gets out of bed her surroundings are baby-proof.

My son went straight from his crib to a big boy bed at 21 months. It has worked out perfectly. We set up the bed and played in the room for about a week before we actually tried it out. We started with nap time one Saturday afternoon and never looked back. He loved his crib and never climbed out, although I knew he was perfectly capable of climbing out if he wanted to. I say go for it and good luck.

Our youngest girls are nearly 4 and they are still in their crib converted toddler beds. I'm planning on keeping them in the toddler beds as long as I possibly can. I don't want to have to buy new beds yet.

My both my kids were in twin beds by 18 months. Neither one of them tried to climb out either. If you can find a great deal on a bed, then go for it! I got a sealy set for my oldest when I put her in one for 100 bucks on clearance!!! She picked out her first bedding set and I got one of those mesh bed rails from a friend. Now my son sleeps in the same bed and we let him pick out his bedding set too.

You'll have times when she gets out of bed when she realizes she has the freedom to do so. Just stay calm and pull a 'supper Nanny' on her and all will be fine!!

Good luck

many moms thing kids should stay in baby beds until kids are old. I understand why but the younger you switch them out the less problems you'll have and the better the transition you will have. All my 6 were in toddler beds by 14-15 months at nap time and in them all the time by 18 months. I have never really had ANY issues with wandering but if your house is baby proof and you have a monitor in the room there shouldn't be any issues any way. You can always use a gate in the doorway if you are very worried about them, for example falling down stairs.

You can purchase plastic backed mattress pads at Wal-Mart, we have them on the kids beds, wash them in warm or cold water, and dry on low or air dry to keep the plastic from becoming brittle or melted. I use low and about 30 minutes and that works fine.

Is she crawling out of her crib? That is why we had to move our child to a bed at 1 year.. She was an escape artist..

You could always purchase the mattress and keep it wrapped in Plastic stored in your garage or a friends garage till she is ready.. I suggest when you do start her away from the crib, just set the mattress on the floor next to a wall or in a corner so she can get used to sleeping with out the sides of the crib.. If she rolls out it is not a far fall.

It's not too early. My first was in the twin (on the floor w/out the bed frame) at 15 months; and my second at about 18 months because she was climbing out of the crib! If you can afford it, go for it. But be prepared for a lot of getting in and out of bed when she doesn't want to go to sleep. They start working you for the independence and you have to be strong and make sure she knows that bed time means staying in bed and trying to go to sleep.

No, it's not too early. Many people skip toddler beds and go straight to twin beds. Make sure you get a side rail to put on it until she gets use to not having the crib sides to keep her from rolling out. Sounds like your excited, and so will she to have a big girl bed!

My son was out of his crib in a toddler bed (with a side rail) by 18 months and did really well.
The difference is that instead of calling out for me in the morning, he comes in our bedroom to snuggle with us or claiming that it's morning and time to get up :-)

My daughter moved to a twin bed around 18 months, and she had no problems with it. She sleeps in it great, I am pregnant and am due around her 2nd birthday and we wanted to transition her out of baby stuff sooner than later so she doesnt feel like baby is here and she is taking all of her stuff.

My daughter LOVED being in a big girl bed at two. She was great, she slept in it perfectly. My son is still in a crib at two and I will probably wait for a big bed for him because he still sleeps against the side of his crib. My daughter asked to sleep in a big girl bed before she was two and my son still shows no interest. See what your daughter wants. I think they know when they are ready. Good luck.

Two is plenty old enough to sleep in a regular bed. (I can't believe she is still in a crib) Just make sure if you invest in a good mattress that you invest in a good mattress cover. Make sure it's waterproof. A really good mattress cover can sometimes be a little pricy, but it's never as much as replacing the mattress. :)

My daughter was in a twin bed at 18 months. If you are afraid that she will fall out. Then you can purchase a netted rail to go on the bed.
