I have a 20 month old and an almost 5 year old. My 5 year old is just about out of his toddler bed and they are soon going to be sharing a room so I wanted to get them twin beds that can be made into bunk beds but I am not sure about the 19 month old. My son was 3 ½ when we had my daughter and we had to take him out of the crib and decided to put him in a toddler bed. I heard some people don’t even get toddler beds? What did you do with your kids and at what age? What were your experiences?

What can I do next?

Crib til 3 or they are climbing out is best.

And toddler beds are a waste.
Just go to a twin/bottom bunk with a bed rail!

We went from crib to twin beds at 2 and 2.5 for our kids.

We usually transition out of cribs and into twin beds between 12 & 18 months. With one of our daughters we got a daybed and turned it around backwards so that it had built in rails on 3 sides. The rest of them we just used one of the portable rails that slip under the mattress.

My DD swapped when she was 2.5 and was launching out of her bed, so we converted it. You could also just put a mattress on the floor until he's ready for a big bed.

Our daughter could scramble out of her crib, at the lowest setting by 12 months. She was a monkey.

We purchased a queen bed and never looked back. We placed it in the corner of the room at first, but soon just moved it to the center of the room, it was nice for the 3 of us at night when we all read bedtime stories and books together.

You gotta do , what you gotta do.

No toddler beds here, right to twin beds at about 2 years old.

We never did toddler beds either. My son went into a twin bed around 19 months, and my daughter went into her twin bed around 15 months. Both climbed out of their cribs, so that's why we switched so early. They both did wonderful--never crawled out or anything. They also slept much stronger in beds as opposed to their cribs. I now have a crib that transitions into a toddler bed, and then a day bed. So, since I've already got that one, I'll probably try a toddler bed first with my 11mo daughter.

i have a 4 year old and a 19 month old. My 4 year old slept in a toddler bed until she was 3.5 and now both my girls have twin beds, (we never used a toddler bed for my 19 month old) I baught a safety side rail to go on the side of my 19 month olds bed and it works great. you could do that or buy the twin beds and just use the toddler bed for your youngest until you are comfortable.....

We switched my daughter to a toddler bed at about 20 months. If I could do it over, I would have pushed for a twin bed which we wound up getting for her for her 3rd birthday. My son switched to the toddler bed at around the same age. I only put him in the toddler bed because we kept it from my daughter. He's 2.5 now and flails around in his sleep a lot so I think he'd be better off in a twin bed right now. I just need to save up for it.

I'd suggest getting the twin bed, push it against the wall and stick a long rail on it. Or even stick the mattress on the floor like another poster suggested. It is nice to have the room to lay down with them and twin mattresses are more comfortable than toddler/crib ones. Don't waste your money on a toddler bed.

My best friend had bunk beds for her 2 oldest kiddos when her 3rd was born....they were 4 & 18months. She didn't like them as much as she thought. Her boys now have a twin bed with a trundle bed. You might look into that, especially since your youngest is still little.

We went to a toddler bed somewhere between 18 months and 2 yrs old. We did put up a gate across the doorframe so we didn't have anyone wandering down the hall or down the stairs at night. Our kids never crawled out of their cribs. If you went to a twin bed instead of the toddler bed, I'd probably get a rail for the side of the bed not against the wall, since it is higher off the ground than the toddler bed.
