My 3 y/o has been congested, sneezing and has had red, itchy, watery eyes for the past 2 weeks. I've been giving her Claritin which clears up the congestion but does nothing to help her eyes. Yesterday morning she woke up with a very puffy right eye and I took her to the ped. She prescribed Pataday eye drops which I put in her eyes before bed and she cried saying it hurt. She's never had any drops before so I'm sure it any drops would have upset her. But now, I'm not sure what to do...does anyone have a toddler with bad seasonal allergies? how long does it last? Have you used Pataday? Has it worked? What else could I be doing to alleviate her eyes? Sorry for all the questions but no one else in our immediate family has allergies and I'm not sure what to do. I just want to "fix" my baby! :) Thanks in advance for all your help!

What can I do next?

My 4 yo has been on zyrtec since she was 18 months since she has bad allergies. This keeps her eyes under control without the drops. Claritin does not work as well from my own personal experience on it, I also take zyrtec which works for me as well. I would ask to have the script changed to zyrtec, my daughter now takes 3 mls twice a day. Good luck, allergies are horrible!

my three year has allergies bad. i have not heard of those eyes drops but my doctor did prescribe something. she said it hurt at first but she finally got used to the idea of the drops. most children in my experience say things hurt because they are scared of it because of not knowing what it is. i try vicks for everything to do with congestion. as far as the eyes go try a cool or warm rag over these eyes on and off, it reduces the swelling and puffiness. my mother in law put coffee grinds in a warm rag and then put on my daughter's eyelids. that also brought down the puffyness. i know it sounds crazy but try it it works.

My 3 y/o also suffers from bad "allergy eyes." His eyes have been red and very swollen, plus they weep and produce matter. Poor thing sometimes looks like he can barely see out of the narrow slits left by the swelling. He rubs his eyes furiously, and has cried about how much his eyes hurt. The pediatrician gave him once-a-day Claritin, but said we could use Allegra, which is stronger, if necessary. We moved to twice-a-day Allegra. The doctor also gave us samples of Pataday, plus a prescription to fill if the Allegra didn't do the trick. Allegra wasn't enough; it didn't alleviate the eye redness, swelling, weeping. The Pataday does offer relief. I wish we could eliminate our son's exposure, but children play outside. They go out daily at my son's home day care, and he feels isolated when kept inside while other children play. We do keep our house and cars closed, however. Tip: put in the Pataday drops at the beginnig of the day, before pollen exposure. Our son doesn't like the drops going in (what little child does?), but he answers in the negative when I ask if they hurt. He's at the point where he recognizes that they help, so he submits to the routine of putting them in. It's been about a week, but the combination of Allegra and Pataday gives us significant improvement. Also, make sure children are washed head to toe before bedtime, and try to avoid contaminating bedding at nap times. I hope this helps. Good luck! Like us, I bet you're hoping this is limited to Spring, and won't proceed into Summer.

Benadryl is typically more effective in more people than Claratin (Though it also causes some amount more drowsiness). Claratin, for example, does nothing for me. Try a few different antihistamines. They don't all work the same for all people. If she finds the right one, it should take care of her eyes if you have her wash her face well with a washcloth a couple times a day to reduce any exposure related pollen.

My experience with eye drops and allergies is that while they often work, they sting like hell when you put them into irritated eyes. And the right antihistamine makes them mostly unnecessary.

Also using a humidifier in her room may help some because it pulls pollen out of the air by making it wet and heavy.

Preservatives in eye drops can sting, and for some kids that's a deal-breaker.

About 8 out of 10 people benefit from homeopathy, and there are homeopaths who work well with children. Two huge pluses are that there are no side effects, and the tiny pellets that melt under the tongue are pleasant to use.

I get instant relief from hay fever symptoms and hives using a remedy that fits my particular symptoms.

My 4 year old son has had the same problem. Luckily this year we only had red, itchy eyes without the puffiness. We've had him on Zyrtex once a day. We have also used eye drops by Similasan and a cool wet wash cloth, when needed. I've used the eye drops myself and they don't sting. He has had prescription eyedrops in the past, but these stung. We have also used Benedryl in emergencies.

I use Pataday myself, and if my eyes are dry, it stings just a little. But it does not last long. I cannot tolerate wearing contacts if I don't use it. It has been a life-saver for me. I'd give it a few more days.

L.,
My entire family suffers from seasonal allergies. There is no particular timeframe as to when they will go away. They can last all Spring and Fall. My 6-year-old son suffers on some days and not on others. I give him Claritin or Zyrtec in liquid form and saline drops or spray in the nose helps a lot. I have not given him anything for the eyes. I have used them myself and they do sting for a moment if your eyes are dry or irritated. Once the symptoms subside, I continue to give him the medicine throughout the season, especially if he is going to play outside or if we are going to a farm. One other note, riding in the car with the window down can also worsen the allergies. It allows pollen to fly into the car. I pray your son gets better soon.

both my son and i have bad seasonal allergies. It is not fun. My son is only 18 months. What helps us the most is this spray, well, tt is actually a 3 in one cleaner, and it can be used for tons of different stuff. (i use it in our laundry, to make my own baby wipes, etc. its natural, so totally safe for a multitude of issues) but the most common way that i use it is as a diluted spray. I use it just like fabreeze, it is a great deodorizer, but it also kills dust mites. Dust mites are actually the leading cause of allergens, because they fecal matter traps in allergens and makes them worse. very gross. i spray down our whole house at least once a week. everything that is fabric and is capable of getting sprayed, gets sprayed. it has helped a TON with our allergies. I am actually going to use it today!
