18 Month with Allergies

My 18 month old daughter has been coughing a lot and then itching in her ears. No temp, but she has had a history of ear infections so I took her to the Dr. today. She said that she sounds fine and her ears look perfect. Probably has allergies with how high the pollen count is right now. I feel so bad because I know she is miserable, but what can I do for her?

What can I do next?

Ask the dr if she/he would prescribe allergy medicine. My child who is the same age is on liquid zyrtec and it has made a huge difference.

Our 3 y/o son has the same problem. He woke up in the middle of the night a couple weeks ago, and after I got him and put him back asleep, he just went crazy itching both ears! Dr. said the same thing, his ears were clear, just allergies. Funny thing was we had taken him to an allergist in Feb. and he tested only mildly positive for seasonal allergies! We had been trying Zyrtec and Omnivaris spray, both of which did very little, so the pediatrician switched him to Allegra and he had been much much better since! They are not completely gone but the symptoms have reduced tremendously. I know it's bad in general too because I usually don't have problems in the spring and it's been really bad for me too. We also have been putting hydrocortisone ointment on his arms and legs since he itches them a lot at night too, also from allergies. Good luck, hope this passes quickly!

My 19-month old daughter is having a hard time right now too - the pollen count is the highest it's been so far this spring, and she's been coughing, sneezing, and her eyes are watery and red. There's not anything that I know of that little ones can take for allergies, but I do give her a half-dose of Tylenol in the morning and again before bed. This seems to relieve her congestion and itchiness a bit. I also push fruit and fluids to help keep her mucus thin and clear.

We run a cool-mist humidifier at night in her room, and we let her "veg" a lot more on days when it's bad - the rest seems to help her little body fight it off. I've also started giving her locally grown honey on toast or bread. Evidently, this can build up their immune systems to fight off the pollen reaction. It takes weeks or even months to start to take effect, but anything that will reliever her suffering (and the fussiness that comes with it) is helpful!

Pray for rain - that almost always calms the pollen down quite a bit.

i feel for her. I am going through that right now, as well as my son. The pollen counts are horrendous! unfortunately, most of your allergens and pollutants are IN your house. Dust mites are horrible. random gross fact for you, the average person's mattress gains about 1 POUND of dust mites a year. When dust mites poop, it traps in allergens and makes them a ton worse. i started buying all of my cleaning stuff and body stuff online, because they have this awesome cleaner that you can mix into a spray and it kills dust mites and reduces allergens. its a great deordorizer too. i swear, i use it on everything! i spray it on all our furniture, the carpets, the curtains, stuffed animals, pillows, mattresses. anything that is fabric and can be sprayed, gets sprayed. it had helped a TON with our allergies!
i almost forgot and had to come back and edit, go to http://www.HealthySafeAndClean.com, there is more info there and that is who you request info for about the spray! lol.

My son has been getting 1/2 tsp. of children's Claritin daily since he was just over a year old (he's two now). The dosage was given to me by his pediatrician, so you can ask her doctor what dose she should have (probably the same). He was coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes and ears, the whole nine yards, but the Claritin has worked like a charm. I use the off-brand variety and it works just fine. I hope she is just seasonal and doesn't need it year round. Good luck!

yep, the allergies are hitting all of us hard. My ears snap, crackle, pop ALL day long! No pain, just a full- needing to pop- sensation. I take both Zyrtec & Singulair daily to ease my allergies. My older son occasionally pops Claritin. My younger son normally uses Benadryl, but it hasn't been keeping up for him....so this week he switched to Mucinex.

Your best bet would be asking the Dr for an allergy med for her. My sons took allergy meds as young as 4 months....as needed thru the season.

A steam vaporizer should help. Also keeping a teapot on low on the stove to moisturize the air.
