Mamas & Papas -

Last year my father fashioned an infant swing out of a plastic milk crate, and slung it from a low branch of the magnolia tree. This year, DS is 18 months, and 25lbs. The plastic milk crate, while cute, never swung quite right. Any ideas for a replacement? Do we need some sort of hook or clasp to help it swing better? can this be done without harming the tree?

Thanks,
F. B.

we bought my two year old a new swing this year (his fisher price infant seat said it was for up to two years but he stopped fitting into it at 1 yr and he is small for his age) it is a little tykes swing, it is ment to be a replacement for a swing on a swing set but I bought some s hooks and managed to loop the chain aroung a tree limb and it held my weight so I figure it would work for my 28pd kid. He loves it and comstantly wants to go out to swing swing.

If you don't have your heart set on making something... you can get a toddler swing (the 1/2 bucket kind) at Home Depot or Lowes, with the chains already attached, for about $25. Then maybe just screw the chains into a 2x4 and hang that from the tree?

Little Tykes makes a swing that can be used as a small toddler and an older child. We like ours. You'd need to put loops in the tree (or rope around it to hold it) for the s hooks but I've seen neighbors using it on their tree.

If you check out the Walmart or Amazon website, you can get ideas about tree swings.
That is the search word you would use "tree swings."
The products will also tell you, up to what weight, the swing will hold. Or what ages the swing is for.

And, many times, these swings comes with what you will need to hang it.
Or, go to your local hardware store, tell them that you are hanging a tree swing and they will tell you what you need to hang it.
And what type of rope you will need, per the weight that you will be hanging and of the child etc.
That is what I did. And they told me which rope is strongest and best and what hook or "swivel hook" or "hanging hardware" to get.
ALSO ask them, how to tie the knot, on the rope so that it does not slip, as it is being used.
