Toddler Drank LYSOL - Help?!

My 2 1/2 year old got a hold of a container of Lysol Wipes. It was sitting on the kitchen table closed. I was washing dishes. When I turned around she had just put it up to her mouth and taken a drink of the liquid that was in there. She immediately started coughing and sputtering, ya know, like it tasted nasty. I called poison control and after putting me on hold multiple times and having a hard time "identifying the product" they told me to just give her a little something to drink and that she may throw up or have diarrhea but she would be okay. Is this true?? She seems normal, but should I take her to the ER or anything? To clarify, she only got a swallow, if that, of the liquid that was in the container with the lysol disinfecting wipes. Help. I'm freaking out. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

For those who are not reading the entire message: I ALREADY CALLED POISON CONTROL.

They are the ones who said she may throw up or have diarrhea but that she'd be okay...

Thanks for all the advice/input!

Not that I have to answer to any of you, but I did not take her to the ER right away because I called POISON CONTROL. They were able to find out all the ingredients and tell me what I needed to do - whether it was an emergency or if she would be fine. I posted this AFTER I talked to them and they said she may vomit, but she would be okay. Our local emergency room SUCKS for one thing, and secondly they would have just referred to poison control themselves...so yeah...I did not want to take her in and expose her to all those nasty germs unless I had to. I posted this for reassurance, not for a diagnosis. Btw: she did not have any sort of reaction. So obviously she did not actually ingest any...or perhaps just a minute amount. So thank you to those of you who actually tried to help, and thank you to those of you who took the time to be judgmental. Appreciate it.

Rachel - thanks for the file! It was very helpful.

My pediatrician told me they refer patients to poison control when something has been ingested. When I had to take my daughter to the ER for an ingestion a few weeks ago even the ER called and referred to poison control. I would keep a close eye on her and give her lots of fluids and follow the directions given to you by poison control.

Edited: those of you saying call poison control can you read?!? It says not only in her question but also in her what happened that she called posion control!
Edited: you're welcome :) I googled it. when I used to work in a nursing home and hospital they kept msds sheets for every product in a huge binder and everyone had to go through training on where they were located on every floor and how to use them so I figured it would help you.

Calm down! You called poison control, good thinking! Put in a call to her doc to see what they say. She probably didn't drink that much. Wait for the doc and take a deep breath!

I would trust poison control. In my experience, they are pretty good at theri jobs (I've had to call twice). You can always call your pediatrician, who probably know less than posion control. But s/he might be willing to look in her mouth and throat and make sure she didn't burn herself. But odds are she got virtually nothing and if she is acting happy, then she proabably is okay.

if poison control says she's okay then I wouldn't worry about it. my DD got a hold of an empty container of shout gel. She was chewing away on the tip of it when I caught her. Poison control said it was just an irritant and she would be fine and she is.

Does the container say anything? Sometimes they'll say to seek immediate medical attention...

If it were me I would still call the pediatrician.

I'm shocked that Poison Control was so... unhelpful. I've never had that sort of experience with them.

Anyway, I would call your pediatrician. Poison Control should have advised you that your next step is always to call your pediatrician or family practitioner.

I think she's probably okay. I know it's scary but you did the right thing by calling poison control and they gave you advice, albeit vague advice, they still gave it to you. These people are well trained and although they didn't give you a resounding "yes she'll be okay" the fact that they didn't advise you to go the ER immediately is actually comforting. Whenever I've called Ask a Nurse or something, they will say you can wait it out or they will say we strongly encourage a visit to the ER. If you're feeling nervous put in a call to her doctor, but I'd probably just give her more fluids and wait. Hang in there!!

If this ever happens again, call the 800 number on the package. My son once drank glue from a craft set, I called the company after looking up the number online. Most consumer products have an 800 number to contact them. I probably wouldn't bother with poison control.
