I view it like any other service person - for really good service with a good attitude, I tip $10/person for this kind of stuff. For lackluster service or service with a bad attitude, no tip.
It's been FOREVER since I've had anything installed/delivered for my house (23 years or so really) - so I'm not sure what flies now. I'm having Home Depot install carpet in two rooms of my house this week. Do I tip the installers? If so, how much? I'm also having a couch, coffee table and side table delivered later in the week. Do I tip the delivery men? If it matters, for the carpet, the rooms are on the first floor (living room and dining room) and there will be 3-4 light pieces of furniture to move which I've paid $50 extra for as they don't move furniture unless you pay ahead of time. Thoughts?

I don't tip anyone except servers in sit down restaurants and Sonic Car Hops and people who cut our hair.
That's it. Other people make good wages for doing their jobs.
My hubby is a carpet installer. He gets a tip maybe 35% of the time. But he always goes above and beyond, especially for elderly customers. Even if he didn't move the furniture out, he will help move it back in and put it where the customer wants it. Really, anything an elderly person needs done, if he's capable, he'll do it. They usually tip or buy lunch or something. It's not expected, and he doesn't get an attitude if there is no tip; he is just really happy when he does get a tip, no matter the amount.
So, if you want to tip, I would suggest $10 - $20 each for the installers.
Most retailers do not allow tips for their employees. Call he sore and ask for manager and find out If you offer a tip and hey accept, they could be fired.
As far as the remark about 'other people get paid well for doing their jobs'. .... Ummmm nooooo!!! I work for a major hotel chain as the assistant supervisor of housekeeping .. I make $9.50/hour and work under 40 hours a week. The housekeepers earn $8.25/hour. We can go for a week and not get any tips.
For something like this? I would tip $20 per person if they were nice, respectful and did the job well.
When we moved from California to Georgia, we bought breakfast and lunch for the crew. Turned the AC down to 68 and left doors open so they could maneuver easily.
We also gave each person (there were 4) $100 each. Yeah. I know, it is a lot, but we had a LOT of stuff, stairs and it was Georgia hot and humid!!
They were here for almost 7 hours. That was more than we had ever given before. It was really hot (100 degrees) and humid (over 75%) and they worked their butts off.
Yes, the military paid for our move (Georgia is Tyler's Home of Record) and you get one last move when you retire from the military. They set up our beds and made sure our lights were working. They really did go above and beyond for us.
Carpet installers? 20 each.
Furniture delivery? 10 each
I've never tipped furniture delivery because you usually get charged extra for delivery. We did pay some guys $20 once to bring a large piece of furniture down the stairs when they were here for something else. lol
Depending on the quality of the service, I will tip enough to buy each of them lunch and I always have a case of cold water bottles in the fridge for anyone.
I did not tip when my Sleep Number bed was delivered because I told them NOT to come down my driveway... very steep and trucks will scrape or get stuck at the top. Well these guys proceeded to try to come down the driveway, took out a nice sized branch from one of my trees, got stuck on the driveway and it was a huge mess. I did complain to Sleep Number and they sent me a new set of sheets which was unexpected.
I have had furniture delivered and they damaged it bringing it in so no tip for them (they dragged our new mattress along the concrete and didn't realize I was watching) and I also sent it back.
Usually $10 to $20 each and I always have cold bottled water or something to drink available.
I think the only time I've tipped delivery type people was when we moved from TX to NJ. A whole houseful of stuff is a lot. But delivery of furniture I've never tipped on because I'm usually paying an additional charge anyway.
I have never tipped them. Sorry, but when I am paying $99 to have two couches delivered, that's the tip. I don't get tipped for doing my job, which ensures others get paid. I know that's maybe not the norm...but I don't get tipping every person.
I do tip the people who do hair/nails, but I don't tip my dentist. Kind of see what I mean? Not every position requires, expects, or even allows for tipping.
I do always offer a cold bottle or water or Gatorade to anyone who comes to my home doing any kind of work.
I'm not sure about the installers. But as for furniture delivery, I usually give them a five. There are usually two guys, and they each get $5. It's enough for a soda or a sandwich. If I were having an entire house full of furniture delivered, then it'd be $10 each. Just because you pay a delivery fee to the store, doesn't mean that the delivery guys get it all. They don't.
And most will deliver mattresses/bed set and SET THEM UP. That's a hassle I'd gladly tip a few bucks to avoid having to do on my own. Or have the stuff sitting around waiting on husband or teen son to be available. Or possibly bend the wrong way and be stiff/sore for a week after.
Just had a breakfast room (table and 4 chairs) delivered a few weeks ago. Tipped the guys $5 each. Not anything big. I could spare it, no problem. The made 3 trips in/out at least, disposed of all the packaging and plastic wrap, and set it up just like I wanted it. Probably took them about 20 minutes. We live pretty far out from most everything. I was happy to make them at least feel a little appreciated.
I never have but apparently some do:

i would tip all these guys. we tipped the carpet installers $100 to split (there were 4 of them, and they did a great job, 2 rooms), and i'd tip the delivery guys $10 apiece.
