Tiered During Pregnancy

I am 8 weeks pregnant and feeling so sleepy all of the time it seems. I'm having a hard time staying awake during working hours. I find myself going to the bathroom to try and sneak a few min of shut eye. I am sleeping great at night so that's not an issue and I know I should maybe take a nap during my lunch hour, but I feel guilty for not working out at that time. Does anyone know any tricks that help with this? What has worked for you?

What can I do next?

A quick, 10 minute nap seemed to do the trick for me. Also quick sniffs of some Peppermint extract (available at Sprouts or Whole Foods) was refreshing.

you may be sleeping good at night, but you still need more. they say pregnant women need atleast 10-13 hours (so they say). unlike most people, i NEVER got the nice energy return in 2nd tri...it just got worse. and now in the 3rd...ugh. i am so looking forward to having baby so i can be normal again lol. i'd say forget the workout, sleep is more important.... but that's just me....

My dear, I read that a pregnant woman's body at rest is equivalent to a man hiking a mountain. That's how hard your body is working inside to make that baby. You have to rest. Even if it's 20 minutes at a time, you have to do it. I would take naps at work all day. Unfortunately caffeine is not good for you or anything else with any kind of "awake" power. DO stay away from heavy carbs and things that already induce sleep, such as pastas and breads. I know that I ate all day long, snacking on stuff I craved (raw carrots and chex mix). Keep your metabolism up and caught up with your body and it may help.

I just want to tell you not to feel guilty. Of course your tired you are growing a miracle and it takes a lot of work (and sleep). Go ahead and sleep at lunch. I am pregnant with my 3rd and have never been so tired in my life! I nap every chance I get. I've even turned on a movie for my kids and slept on the couch. At first I felt lazy, then I just gave in to the fact that I'm tired!

Since you are in your first trimester, the tiredness may go away as your body figures out what's going on. As for me I'm 36 weeks, I'm sleeping!!! Have a GREAT pregnacy and live it up!

I went through that during my pregnancy too. You do need more sleep. Try getting more sleep, or taking a nap when you can.

Also, drink plenty of water, eat many small frequent meals of a healthy sort.

Take short walks. sometimes a walk in fresh air for 10 or 15 minutes can be all you need to perk up...and it is incredibly good for you.

Hang in there.

I used to be able to function on 3-4 hours sleep everynight. And then I got pregnant. I had never been so tired in my whole life. I could fall asleep in any place I could close my eyes. My regular bedtime was 10pm or earlier. Some nights I was in bed by 8pm. LOL. I found that eating a light breakfast, frequent meals, lots of water, and chewing gum helped. I think what helped the most was walking for 30 minutes after I got home from work. Even though I was tired, after awhile I started to feel more energy when I woke up in the morning. I also made a lot of smoothies. The freshness of it seemed to make a difference. Hope you feel less tired soon!

There is not a heck of a lot you can do, but you certainly shouldn't feel guilty! The first trimester is like that . . . always tired . . . your body is making major adjustments to accommodate the growth of a new life. Don't necessarily give up your lunch hour work out because that could help give you an energy boost. When you feel yourself getting super tired, take 5 minutes for a quick walk, or a cold drink , or even to splash cold water on your face. But when you're home, get the rest you need! It will get better in the second trimester.

welcome to pregnancy! i would ask your dr. to make sure they tested your thyroid. Sometimes your thyroid can act up in pregnancy even though you've never had any problems before. It's important for baby's growth to get replacement hormones. If your thyroid is acting up your will feel much better after getting on hormones.

This is perfectly natural. It should pass by the 2nd trimester. If not, talk to the Dr. about it.

Definitely to be expected. I actually knocked out at a red light during my first trimester! Scary! I totally commiserate. You feel like a walking zombie.

As for tricks, all i can say is to nap as much as you can. Don't feel guilty about not working out - at this point the sleep is just as important to your well being. You have plenty of time to exercise when your energy comes back. Nap during lunch, nap as soon as you get home, whatever it takes. It really does make a difference.

What also helped me was iron. I'm not recommending you taking it willy nilly, but my doc tested me and said I was a little low on it, so had me take Slo-FE. If you're iron deficient, you'll feel even more tired.

Otherwise, it's just your body going through the pregnancy and you'll just have to wait it out. Or sleep it off ;)

Eat well and then just wait it out. It will pass soon. I went through this too. The only thing that even sort of worked was to make sure I was eating good healthy foods several times a day. It helped keep my energy level up but I was still really tired. It only lasted three or four weeks then the sleepiness went away. Congrats!

Great answers. Yep, it's a common symptom for the 1st trimester. Nothing to do but take naps in your car during lunch or after work if you can. The 2nd will go alot smoother and the 3rd is when really exciting things start happening like baby reacting to your voice or you'll start seeing baby shift from one side to the other. Congratulations!!!

The only cure I know of is called - 2nd trimester.

I felt like someone was slipping my sleeping pills! You will feel it a bit toward the latter part of the 3rd trimester as well.

Good luck!!!

You are growing a human being and it takes all your energie and then some. I recall sleeping close to 18 hours a day at one point. Good news is that it should get better in the second trimester. Untill then take naps when you can.

totally normal. I can't imagine any prenatal book is saying anything different, so you might want to start reading them to know what is normal and what isn't.

I would nap at lunch, go home, take a nap, wake up, eat dinner, and go to bed and sleep 10 hours. I did that until my 2nd trimester and then it was the exact opposite. Full of life and energy.

Don't fight it.
