Ok, I am not against thumb sucking at all. My first daughter sucks her 2 fingers and my newborn is 8 weeks and trying to find her thumb and can't. I forgot how old my first daughter was when she started sucking fingers, and wondered when it was they do start sucking thumb. I think once she does it will sooth her so much, she does not like the pacifier!
Please do not respond by telling me how bad it could be for a child to suck the thumb!

What can I do next?

My daughter is almost 19 months old and has sucked her thumb since she was 4 months old. She never really took to a pacifier. I asked her doctor about it and he said not to worry, that most kiddos stop on their own by the time they're 4 yrs old. And I said "Most". They are a few kids who continue well past that age, But, it's really up to the child. I do not worry about it with her. She loves to suck her thumb when she's tired or upset or just to do it. The only thing I worry about is....Will it cause her teeth to stick out when she's older?? Dentist says she should be fine, while others say it will. Again, I am not concerened, whatever makes her happy. My oldest DD sucked on a pacifier until she was 3.5 yrs old. You know what they say, you can take way the pacifier, but not the thumb!! lol! Anyhow, I believe when she does find her thumb it will soothe her...Good luck :) HTH!!

My little thumb sucker was able to get to his thumb right before he turned three months old. My friend's newborn is 10 weeks old and almost has it. :)

Our 4 year old started sucking his thumb at a few weeks-old. The pacifier was never his favorite and always fell out. We could take one thumb out, and he'd put the other in (we thought it was cheap entertainment for us as adults).

We have no problems with him being a thumb sucker. He just turned 4, and the pediatrician says most kids wean themselves when they begin to be made fun of by other kids. Instead of being grumpy and bratty when he's tired, he grabs his blanket and sucks his thumb.

It also helped pull a tooth back into place when he fell as a toddler and jammed it backwards.

My daughter found her thumb at about 4 months. She started by smacking herself in the forehead and dragging her hand down her face until her thumb got into her mouth. It was awfully cute. My son could get his thumb from birth.

Have you tried letting your daughter suck on your pinky finger? That's what we did for my daughter for a bit and it really helped. Good luck!

My oldest son sucked his thumb instantly.......I think he did in the womb too since his elbow was always poking up on my tummy. So it won't take long.......getting them to stop is the fun part.

Enjoy the kids and have fun.....take care

My granddaughter was caught on ultrasound sucking her thumb! She's almost 7 now, and still does it when she's tired or bored. She could get it in her mouth almost from the time she was born, and would not settle for a pacifier. I will say that pacifiers are much easier to give up, but very young babies have to learn how to suck on them and constantly push them out of their mouths until they get the hang of it. It's not rejection, it's just a learned function.
