get a cat who goes outside and hunts. The only time I have ever lived places where we did not have an issue was when we had outisde cats
I'm sure everyone has this problem right now. We have our friendly neighborhood chipmunks who like to destroy everything. There are holes in the front and the back of the house. They're starting to make various holes in my flower bed and I'm really starting to get sick of them. Does anyone how we can get rid of these critters? My children love them and have named them and my daughter even feeds them, which needs to stop. I need suggestions on ways I can get rid of them. Thanks!

Blood Meal is my favorite solution. It won't hurt animals or children, it helps the soil and it completely terrifies little critters. Blood meal is just what it sounds like - it's powdered blood. To an animal it smells like a slaughterhouse. To people it doesn't smell like anything. The animals stay away.
Good luck.

I don't know how to get rid of them, but I have to say I am amazed at the cruelty some of you women exhibit here. BB guns and drowning? These are living animals! I am quite sure that if you look up humane ways to get rid of chipmunks on the internet, something will come up.
Some of you people need to learn a little bit of compassion. Seriously. What kind of lesson does that teach your children?
Find out if they sing and maybe you could make some money off them. Sorry I couldn't resist. Sorry I don't have a solution to your problem
We had chipmunks too. My kids were afraid of them and they refused to go outside. We got rid of them without causing harm. We got Wrigley juicy fruit gum. Wear gloves so there is NO human scent, rip up a package and put it in each hole. Then mix up a 1/2 Cayenne pepper and 1/2 Baby powder mixture and dribble it around the areas where you have seen the cute little guys (landscaping, any area you would like them not to go). We did this 3 weeks ago and I have not seen the creatures since. No appearance even after it rained so much.
I didn't believe it would work but it truly did. I got advice from a web site: http://www.stretcher.com/stories/03/03jun02a.cfm
Good luck!
Not sure how to get rid of them per se. However, we got new neighbors last year and they have two cats that they leave outside. Sadly, we have not seen our little chipmunk friends at all this year. I know they must be around because I have two holes but, we have not seen them at all. : (
Yes, your daughter has to stop feeding them. Try to explain to her that they are rodents, and carry diseases just like mice & rats do.
We had the same problem, and while I know many folks don't like "getting rid of them", they were causing WAY to much damage all around our yard. So here's what we did:
#1 We encouraged our dog to "Get 'em!" (She's a Chow, so not really a "varmit" dog at all, but praising her for dashing after them worked great.)
#2 After the end of July, when you won't drown babies, put a hose into a hole & turn it on. Let it run, and run, and run. If you have multiple holes, do this to each.
#3 Drop mothballs in the holes. They hate them!
#4 Fill holes, of stomp on them. Also, stomp the ground between holes. (There are usually tunnels just under the surface that will collapse when you stomp on them.)
#5 If you feel like "saving them" get a live trap. A little bird seed, or some bread, they go right in. Do NOT leave the traps out at night, or you'll find mice in the morning! LOL Reloate them at least 1-2 miles away.
#6 This one you have to be careful with, but it REALLY works. Get a BB gun. Check with your town to see if they're allowed. And whether they are, or not, be careful! Make sure there is nothing behind your target that you will hit & injure or damage.
It's quite easy to get them to sit in a good target area. Spread some birdseed on the ground in an open area. Guinea Pig or Rabbit food works very well. (I think they can smell it easier than bird seed.)
Sit at least 15 feet away & be ready to aim & fire. Have a plastic bag ready for disposal.
Once you remove 3-5 of them, you'll notice the decrease in damage immediately. I think some move off to the neighbors after realizing it's no longer a safe area, but overall, it's just that each one is very destructive every day!
Good luck!
(I'm adding this after reading what Rachel C. wrote after me -- I wonder if there are any living things on or near her property!! Honestly, she sounds like a nut! Shooting chipmunks with a BB gun?? Sounds like fun! Let's get the family together for some old fashioned killing!! FYI -- if you have one you have hundreds in your area. Shooting a few here and there isn't going to do much but make you look like a total idiot. Trapping them? Well, if you put a trap out you might get something "worse" than a chipmunk, like a skunk or angry raccoon. But wait! Get a BB gun and shoot them too!) OK, here's what I originally wrote:
Join the chipmunk club I guess! lol. We have had them for years and we love feeding them (from the bird feeder -- they get the leftovers). They do dig holes around the yard, but the rabbits cause way more damage to my flower beds than the chipmunks. Our neighbor did have a retaining wall that was destroyed by their tunneling (it was made of wood and stone and was probably 25 years old). So when he rebuilt it he made it out of concrete! We (the neighborhood) have noticed a couple foxes this year in our yards, and the chipmunk population seems to have waned a bit. Maybe -- get a fox? (We also have skunks, which we think are quite cute and funny, and raccoons, which also eat the bird seed. I think you're probably going to have to learn to co-exist with your chipmunks, and try to enjoy them! Good luck!)
LMFAO.... sorry to laugh but I am like your daughter and I have also named mine- generic but I call the one I see all the time Alvin! lol
My hubby has found that the only way to get rid of them (without killing them) is to stop feeding them or the birds- they climb on our bird feeder to get what they can out(I think it is the cutest to see their bodies wrapped around the thing)or they sit on the ground and get the droppings!
My husband has given up since he loves watching the birds with our daughter (so no removing the food source). Now we just live with them and my husband is realizing that making me and Trinity happy is worth it to have the lil critters around! I hope you find a humane way to do it without giving up things that you enjoy! Good luck!
ps- on a good note! You have raised your daughter to be a nurturing girl and should give yourself a pat on the back for that one! She is doing the same exact thing you probably did as a kid and drove your parents nuts! Wait til she brings home the stray cats and dogs! And your son is bringing home snakes and toads! lol
