This Kitten Is Driving Me INSANE!!!

My husband found a kitten in our backyard a few months ago, she couldn't have been more than 5-6 weeks old. She was very sick- we had to bottle feed her for a few weeks even. Well now we "think" she is maybe 5-6 months old? We have taken her to the vet and all that jazz- but we haven't gotten her fixed yet due to money. We were planning on doing that this month actually. We never planned on getting another kitten so we weren't financially ready for it. I could never take her to the Animal Shelter here, just thinking of her in a cage makes me want to throw up. We had been trying to find her a good home by word of mouth though, but my husband has become pretty attached to her so it looks like she will be staying.

Well the past two days I guess she is in heat? I didn't think cats so young could...which is why we didn't rush getting her fixed.
She is driving me absolutley bonkers with all her howling and meowing, last night I barely slept because she never shut-up. Tonight I am planning on keeping her in the bathroom so everyone can get a good nights sleep hopefully...I wasn't the only one she kept awake.

I know there isn't anything I can do to stop this now that is has started...but how long is it going to last and will she ever SHUT UP??? I love my cats like they are my own kids but this is enough to make anyone batty

*** We do not want to breed her. Our other 2 cats are both fixed already. I think I will give the shelter here a call tomorrow and see if they do it. I'm sure it will be alot cheaper than the vet.

***Itsacrazylifewith4- AHHH YES! I caught her peeing in the dirty clothes WHILE I was doing laundry.

What can I do next?

Most cats go into heat when they are about 4-8 months old. Usually around 6 months - so yes she is a perfect age to start going into heat. Usually heat lasts about 7-10 days. Unfortunately unless they become pregnant they can go into heat once a month. If you are financially unable to spay her I would look into low-cost spay and neuter clinics. As soon as she is out of heat get it done. Spaying does a myriad of beneficial things including elminating uterine cancer, lowering chance of mammary cancer, lowering unwanted behavior - like the howling. You can try some kitty pheromones in the house but those can get pricey too. Most people just put up with it. Good Luck and I hope you get some rest.

I ditto everything Caroline R. wrote. I am a veterinarian and unless you want her to get preggo (and I don't recommend it!), the only thing you can do is get her spayed ASAP. I would also recommend looking into low-cost or no-cost options (Humane Society, etc.) in your area.

EDITED TO ADD: You can spay them while they are still in heat - you don't need to wait for the heat cycle to end. I have spayed many many cats that were in heat, nothing to worry about it. I won't spay dogs in heat though, it's much more difficult and they tend to bleed more (though some vets are fine with it) - I will wait until they are out of it, but their behavior isn't so annoying while they are in heat either. Funny story: sometimes we have owners bring in their female cat in heat as an emergency because they don't realize the cat is in heat and they think something is horribly wrong. They think the cat is in pain from something and that is why she keeps crying and rolling around and laying funny. We get to tell them, no, she's just horny!

The heat will last about 10 days. If you dont let her out you wont have to worry about more kittens, but you should give her attention, her hormones are crazy. You cant get them fixed while they are in heat. Call your local spca and ask them when the next spay and neuter clinic is,

Cats self induce ovulation. What that means is that they will not ovulate until they are penetrated by a male and end a cycle. If and when that happens is when the "heat" cycle completes. If they are not, cats can and will seem like they are always in heat when in reality they are simply finishing one cycle and then going right into another. Longer days determine when cycles start. Also cats can and will go into heat right after giving birth, sometimes abandoning a litter of kittens. The ONLY time a cat can not be in heat is when they are preggos. That's why it's SO important to get these guys spayed. They can produce a lot of cats in a lifetime if left un spayed. It's also very stressful as you can tell for them to go through it. It's not anything like a dog at all that generally cycles twice a year. So only thing that will stop this is ever having a vet penetrate her and simulate mating or letting her breed or just getting her spayed. If you want to wait until she is out of cycle, you might be waiting a very long time, like in the fall. Sorry.
Best Regards,
C.

Yep 7 to even 10 days. The yowling will probably taper off as the days go by. Then get her scheduled quickly!

My cat used to do that, it lasted about a week. It drove me NUTS. And it would happen 2 or 3 times a year. She would also pee on any cloth on the floor including the bath rug or towels. I was able to have her fixed for low cost at a shelter. A lot of shelters have programs to help reduce the cost because a lot of people don't fix their pets due to the high cost.
Call a couple of shelters and see if they have anything or can direct you somewhere.

I bet the Humane Society in your area or the shelter has a reduced price spay and neuter clinic. Call your county's shelter and see.
And do it soon, she will be impossible to train out of peeing on things if she gets into that habit, even females can mark their territory. ewwwww

Oh and mine was in heat when she went in and they did it anyway. I know some say you have to wait. I did have to pay a higher cost. It was soooo worth it.

yeah, our kitten did this before we could get her fixed... but she never peed on anything so we just thought it was cute, not as annoying. We're weird that way.

If you do an online search there are organizations in every state that offer low/no cost spay options. We got a certificate that we paid 60 dollars for to get our kitten spayed. That sounds expensive, but compare it with the 250 bucks our vet quoted us before we looked into it! The only hitch is you usually have to go to a participating vet, and ours was not one. But the vet we ended up at was highly recommended and everything went great.

Good luck with your little fluffy!
