J.:

How long are you going to be here?
What are your interests?
Are you driving here or flying?
I will assume you will have a rental car...I would STRONGLY suggest that you use the metro for DC.
How many kids?
Ages of kids?

You can purchase tickets in advance to make your travel around the city easier.

DC:

the National Mall
http://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/maps.htm

This will include The Jefferson Memorial, Iwo Jima, Vietnam Veterans Memorial...sorry - you can't do a White House tour...thank 0bama for that one....and all the "representatives on the hill - no matter what party they are with!), Tide Water, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument (not sure if it is open again), Arlington National Cemetery....in this alone - you can spend at least 2 to 3 days.

The Smithsonian Museums
The Spy Museum (not free)
http://spymuseum.com/

National Harbor - Oxen Hill, MD/DC...lots to do..restaurants like Ketchup...
http://nationalharbor.com/events/upcoming/

Inner Harbor - Baltimore
http://innerharbor.com/

I would do Pennsylvania - Gettysburg if you are into history. Which is about 1.5 hours from DC.

Virginia:

We have a ton of stuff here.
Udvar Hazy Air & Space Museum - parking is $14 - entrance is free. This is a FULL day experience as well, unless you rush through museums.

Bull Run
Manassas
Thomas Jefferson's house- Monticello - it's about a 2.5 hour drive from DC and well worth it.

Hope this helps get you started!!! If you would like my contact information in case you get lost while you are here - please send me a PM and I will give you my contact information!

Don't forget to go to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's house in DC. It's really nice.

Also, as an FYI, the Museum of American History is awesome but about 1/3 of it was closed. So you will only need about 1.5 hours there. Go to the Archives, too. You only need about a 1/2 hour and you will love it. Very cool. Also, be sure to drive around at night. And go see the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington. It's hike to get to it but so worth it.

Check out the DC Ducks - the land/water tour. I think it's called that!

I hate the Spy Museum - so boring and expensive - not worth it.

In VA, there is the Udvar Hazy National Air and Space museum. It's very open and has an IMAX.

Baltimore has an awesome waterfront area, nice restaurants and even a Little Italy. It's a nice place to walk around. You can also catch a game at Camden Yards.

Have fun!!

Well you can't just go to the Whitehouse. You can go to the gate in front lol. Anywhoo there are a million fun things to do in Nova(northern VA), DC, MD(like new childrens museum in National Harbor). Not everything in DC is free, if you have older kids some places "worth" the moneyin DC: Newswum, International Spy Museum, Holocaust Museum..free places Air & Space, Natural History part of the Smithsonian chain of museums.. Depending on your hotel(if they offer fridge/microwave etc.) if you are trying save $$ totally worth it to pack picnic lunches/bring snack. If money doesnt matter-ish then eat at the museums(often very expensive b/c they are free). National Harbor in MD has a couple tourist-y things to see. Actually here's a good website for that area(MD,DC,VA) www.our-kids.com. As for Delaware, we've only been Rehobeth beach there. And the whole no sales tax thing was a big disappointment, they just upcharge everything lol. Have a great vacation!!

They've canceled or will do so soon, any tours of the White House due to sequester budget cuts. So go wave, but you can't ask for a tour.

The Old Post Office is a good place to eat (provided Trump hasn't gutted it for his hotel) that is walking distance from The Mall and Smithsonian Museums. It's like a big food court. You can (or could) also go up in the tower.

The Newseum and The Spy Museum and the National Aquarium in Baltimore are all good, but you have to buy tickets. You might also consider a Duck Tour.

http://ridetheducktours.com/washington-dc.html

Both Baltimore and DC have zoos. The DC one is free. Don't bother with the DC aquarium.

If you are into aviation, or the kids are, there is a nice little museum in College Park. http://www.collegeparkaviationmuseum.com/About_Us.htm

If you are beach people, try Rehoboth or Ocean City. I think Rehoboth or Dewey are more family-friendly.

If you are big into amusement parks you can check out King's Dominion. https://www.kingsdominion.com/

ETA: I wonder if the park Renia is talking about is Brookside Gardens. Very beautiful, and free. There is a butterfly exhibit (for a fee) in the summer. There are also miniature trains not far from there at Wheaton Regional, as well as a carousel. Tickets for those are inexpensive. $1.75 per ride and under 2 are free. If you are wanting just a day at a pool, there are a number of pools and splash parks in Montgomery County and northern VA.

Go to WMATA.com for Metro information. Metro can be expensive, but consider the cost per trip and parking (if you can find it). The zoo is free, but parking is $15, for example. I believe you can now get day or week passes on SmarTrip cards. Travel as much as you want for one flat rate.

If you want to give your kids a bit of a military history trip, there is Manassas (Battle of Bull Run) Military Park West of the DC area, as well as Gettysburg Military Park up in Pennsylvania.

When we went to DC 10 years ago, we stayed on the west side (Chantilly) and did a day trip up to Gettysburg.... well worth the trip for us, as we also visited Manassas on that trip, and also Vicksburg (Mississippi) on the way back to Texas.

Of course, if you are interested in history, there is the National Cemetery in Arlington, with the Changing of the Guards. If you go there, don't forget to see Lee's house .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlington_House,_The_Robert_...
Not many people go ahead and venture up there......

Google the cities. I would just play it by ear. I would NEVER venture into the White House though. I hate rigormorole and security during vacations.

Native American museum is really good for younger children, they have interactive things to really get the kids involved. They often have a storyteller speaking in their native tongue. It's really cool and the first time I went was with my son's Kindergarten class and they were spellbound by the guy talking, even though they couldn't understand him!

Air and Space museum is popular and they regularly have events. Not my favorite place but the kids seem to enjoy it.

The Baltimore Aquarium is nice, make sure you see the dolphin show. Its great for all ages, plus the little ones like sitting close and getting splashed by the dolphins.

A lot of the smaller, less visited places often have a lot going on that kids can enjoy ie the aboretium and bontanical gardens.

In Maryland there is park that is really nice and has a lot of stuff to do and plenty of photo ops. I will have to update with the name b/c for the life of me, I can't remember the name right now. I go often and drive by often, but the name escapes me.

Glen Echo Park is a place people tend to like. It's too far for me to go much, but I live here so its different. They have a puppet theater that's pretty nice, a carousel that kids love, they do paintings etc and often let the kids interact. It's also kind of a artist market, so a good place to find nice, unique things to take back home with you.

Of Course beaches. Ocean City in Maryland, very popular. My bro loves it and his family goes every year. I'm not a fan of beaches so...
Rohobeth and Bethany are more family friendly, so I've been told. I've never been to either.

Oh you can go for rides on the Chesapeake, on what used to be called skip jacks. I was informed last year that they aren't called that anymore, but I can't remember what the guy said they're called now. Anyway its fun, kids learn a lot and if your into oysters etc you will like it. I don't eat any sort of seafood, but I find the little excursion fun!

Oh Annapolis is FUN! Lots too do and great places to eat. We spend most of the time along the pier but there is stuff further up as well. They have smaller museums, very interesting, walking tours ghost tours etc. I would skip their pirate tour, not as much as I thought it would be. They have short boat cruises as well as full day excursions all very nice.

Okay, lol, last thing Baltimore has a pirate cruise that IS very fun. I took my son and I think I had as much fun as he did. Very interactive and the crew was very nice. Plus right around there they have a lot of other things to do and little Italy is only a few blocks away and has lots of dining options.

ETA: Brookside Gardens in Wheaton Maryland. That's the name of the park I mentioned. Fun low key type of event.

Also someone mentioned Luray Caverns...good choice. I forgot all about that!

answers from Dover on

In DE you have the capital (Dover) which houses the Biggs Museum and The Green or Legislative Mall (both nice place for a picnic), the Schwartz Center (check their calendar for events) and Dover Air Force Base (driving by you can see the planes or you can actually visit the museum). There are also several state parks you can check out. If you like the beach, try Lewes if you don't want the boardwalk and shops or Rehoboth if you do. You have to try Grotto Pizza if you visit the beach areas. Also there are pirate adventures that are our of Lewes DE if your kids would like that sort of thing. It is really neat. If you are music people and/or don't have young kids, there is the Firefly Music Festival in Dover in June (I think 22 & 23). Northern DE has the Winterthur Gardens/Museum.

Maryland has Ocean City (beach), Baltimore (inner harbor, aquarium, Orioles Stadium).

Virginia has Chincoteague and the ponies, as well as Wallops Flight Center.

Of course everything in D.C! Metro is very expensive. Just a warning!
Baltimore waterfront, aquarium. Colonial Williamsburg is awesome. If you want a break from history, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg is fun. Newport News Va. Also great beaches there. Can't think of anything in Delaware. If you belong to AAA call and get the books for states you are visiting. Have fun.
