i got the depo shot 3 months ago. and have been on my period for 3 months now. the doctors told me it's normal. and that may be so but i'm now getting severe cramps. it hurts so bad that i can't stand up. it comes and goes and i thought maybe i just had to go to the bathroom. i tried but it didn't work. i still get these severe cramps. it's making it hard for me to take care of my baby when i'm barely holding myself up. i don't believe i've ever had cramps like this before. i was wondering is this normal to. should i have cramps so bad that i can't stand?

What can I do next?

Both times I used Depo I had abnormal bleeding at first because I needed a little more estrogen - I was given an estrogen tablet to take for a while and the bleeding stopped (after that I actually never had a period on Depo). Severe pain/cramps is not a side effect I know of - I would recommend you getting a doctor's appt - something more may be going on.

Get off the depo shot and don't ever take it again. I had the reverse reaction 12 years ago when I took it. I didn't have a period for 9 mo while on it and it took several months after that to get it back! Not a fun experience. I also gained weight with every 3 mo shot. Once I was off the shot I had severe cramps and no pain medicine could fix it. My insurance forced me to get on the pill (my other option was lupron treatments-forced menopause) to see if that would fix it. It did and I've been on the pill ever since, minus the pregnancies.
You might have to get on the pill to get regular, once you are either stay on the pill or try something different. I feel your pain.

Hi Lan:
Get off the shot.
Get a cervical cap for yourself to keep from getting pregnant.

Good luck. D.

I was on the depo shot long ago and I got really bad cramps too. It also makes you gain a lot of weight. I was on it for 2 years and gained 30 pounds... slowly. I gain a few pounds at each appointment. It kinda creeps up on you. I didn't like it so I got off.
There are so many options for birth control now, so you may want to look into other alternatives. Talk to your doctor about your pain, and if he doesn't listen to you, then find another doctor. There's no reason why you have to be in so much pain.

This is definitely not normal. Could this being happening because your body is going off the hormones in the shot. I think they are to last just 3 months. I'd call the doctor back and be graphic, as you've been here, about what is happening. If it's your body in withdrawal, there may be hormones in a pill to help your system adjust.

My daughter had the depo shot with break thru bleeding off and on the whole time and for other reasons that I don't remember right now, never had them again. She didn't have anything like you're having at any time.

Call that doctor back or just get an appointment. I think sometimes the person you call isn't fully listening and they don't get a full understanding of what is happening. Insist that they hear your pain and it's affects.

If you aren't feeling comfortable with your doctor and sense that he isn't paying enough attention to your needs, find another doctor.

PLEASE stop this shot immediately! I have a friend who spend 7 weeks in the ICU due to heart, blood clot and stroke issues caused by this shot. She is currently on the transplant list awaiting a new heart because the Depo shot damaged her own so bad it's nonrepairable. Even though it's inconvenient, it's better to take pills everyday than to have something that stays in your system for months on end and can cause major health issues.

Not normal. Call your doctor's office immediately. Sorry you feel so bad-- it is so hard to take care of a baby when you are sick. You are probably severely anemic at this point-- I would request a blood test as well.

I would suggest an IUD if you are looking for long-term birth control.
