Loved the movie... made me want to research more about all aspects of pregnancy. labor and birth from other developed nations as well as more crunchy aspects of birthing. It was very well done and I felt very balanced.

Start there and keep on going. It's very easy to find a lot of information that backs up some of what's in the movie. It never ceases to amaze me how women do no research surrounding one of the most important situations in their and their children's lives.
If I hear one more Mom say "it doesn't matter how a baby comes into the world as long as it's healthy" I'm going to scream.
It does matter and we should all be much more interested in learning the truth about birth in America.

I liked it. I think it's a good place to start thinking about your baby's birth and how you want it to happen ideally. It made me wish for a home birth, but there was no way we could afford that. It encouraged me to to research more so I could have a natural birth in the hospital setting.

I loved it. That said, I did think they could have done more to show natural hospital births. In my area (MN) we have some great options for tub births, birthing centers, and hospitals that are very supportive and midwife friendly. I had two amazing hospital births here. Home birth is not for everyone (me included) and I'd like to see more focus on "normal" hospital births rather than pushing home birth so much.

There is a 2nd movie that is out Business of Being Born 2 which I haven't yet seen. Perhaps they cover natural/normal hospital births more in that one.

It is a great starter movie if you are just looking for some info on birth in America. It does focus more on hospital births and the use of pitocin and cytotec.More Business of Being Born will bring in other birthing options. Like birth centers and doula's. It focuses less on hospitals but really delves into the other options.

GREAT FILM. Wish I had been more informed...but probably wouldn't have mattered anyway since my first was 7 weeks early and emergency ceserean. 2nd was a successful V-bac, but almost a ceserean too due to double nucal. So I had to have some intervention.

I have to admit though, I was a bit surprised by the amount of body parts uncensored in the film.

But VERY good and very informative.

I recommend it to all young moms having kids. It's a great place to start. Many girls are overwhelmed and feel like I'm way "out there" for having natural-water-birth center births, and they view my advice from a "weirdo" stand point. But this movie makes you realize there are other options. Then the conversation can begin with a more open mind.

The main thing I try to get across to a woman if I only have time for one point is that delivering a baby is not a medical emergency or a disease that needs to be treated. You can completely do it on your own, and it's helpful to have a midwife there to spot anything that could be wrong along the way. You just need to learn how to do it, because the pain is just a guide that way rather than an enemy you're fighting.
