I say sweet potato casserole, my in-laws are from Maryland and their stuffing and sweet potatoes are WAY different than mine. I second sweet potato casserole or corn bread stuffing :)
I'm going back to Maryland for thanksgiving this year and it's our first time back since moving to Texas. I'm responsible for either a side dish or an appetizer. I thought it would be a good idea to bring a bit of Texas home with me and make something Texan. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the great suggestions. I may go with Texas Caviar or Corn Bread Stuffing. I love Pecan Pie, but my mom makes 7 different pies on Thanksgiving and would actually be upset if I made a pie. We have 2 Pecan Pies, 1 Pumpkin, 1 Mincemeat, 1 Cherry, 1 Lemon Meringue, 1 Chocolate, 1 Apple, and we have brownies and fudge.

Cornbread stuffing(homemade) is served every year at our house and my in-laws(they live in Austin) there is also homemade banana pudding- my mother-in-law makes it and it is sooooooo good! My father-in-law makes some great stuffed jalapenos- they are stuffed with cream cheese and then cooked (he does it in a bbq- but they can be done in the oven) he wraps bacon around them before cooking them. Oh- you can't forget the pecan pie, not much of a side dish- but it sure is tasty!
good luck!

how about sweet potato casserole, ambrosia or green bean casserole.
corn bread stuffing is good too
Hmmmm...
Lived in Texas all my life.
Our meal is: a baked turkey, a fried turkey, a glazed ham, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, corn, green bean casserole, broccoli casserole, mac and cheese, rolls, sweet potatoes.
For appetizers we have cheese dip with tortilla chips, cheese roll with crackers, veggies and dip and other finger foods.
Desserts are cheese cakes, pumpkin pies, apple pie, cherry pie, pecan pie, and usually banana pudding.
I don't know if anything I mentioned is any different than a normal Thanksgiving? It is all I know! Lol!
Have fun! If you need any recipes let me know!
Having just left Texas about four months ago (sniff sniff), I know that Texans pride themselves above all others on their barbeque so not sure about a side...maybe potato salad or "ranch" beans???
Pecan pie is the only traditional "Texan" Thanksgiving dish I know of, but what about cowboy caviar as an appetizer? Serve it as a dip with chips
ooh. i like GW's answer. how about some baked beans with chunks of brisquet in it instead of ham? Yum!

I think the Pecan Pie is the best answer. But if it has to be appetizer or side, you might consider Texas Caviar--made with black-eyed peas. It is usually served on New Year's Day. There are lots of recipes, so you can pick one you like.

y best friend is a Native Texan who now lives in Atlanta. She said her inlaws were so disappointed that she had not baked a pecan pie for them. They had always heard about it.
The easiest recipe is on the back of the Karo syrup.
She did make the corn bread stuffing which they loved and ate all of.
My Aunt is famous for her Broccoli rice casserole made with e HEB Jalapeno Velveta cheese.. Es muy bueno!
I am from the east coast as well and understand how you would like to bring some of Texas home with you. I am not sure of a side dish that would be Texan unless you make enchiladas which is not exactly Thanksgiving food. Therefore, I would recommend an appetizer. Along with your appetizer you could bring home some Texas made salsa that you can find at Central Market or go the The Texas Pecan Company in North west Dallas and pick up some nuts that you can also set out to snack on.
As for an appetizer, you could make guacamole, which everyone loves and is not your typical Thanksgiving app. but I think it would be great. Below is a simple recipe that I use for all my parties and I know its just guacamole but I always get great reviews from my guests

Another appetizer idea is Texas Caviar:
