I have a really cute appetizer that looks like a turkey. Its basically grape and cheese cubes on sticks stuck into a mellon with a few additions that looks really cute and easy and may lift the mood. If you, or anyone else wants it, just message me your email and i'll send it to you. Its in a word doc. and has a picture.
And I'm sorry for your loss...Tgiving was the first holiday after losing both my grandma and grandpa, 4 months apart, and it was horrible. Not just for the loss of my grandparents, but because my mom couldn't deal with it and bought the premade Tgiving meal from the store and even served it in the aluminum containers...it was horrible and I will never forget it. So you guys are doing the right thing, especially if there are kids, even tho I know it will be hard.
I am so sorry for your loss. The first holiday is the hardest, but I think you will find people generally grateful to be together.
Potato Casserole
- Orieda hashbrowns (frozen section)
- Carton of sour cream
- 2 cups of shredded cheddar
- can of cream of potato soup
Bake 350 for half hour
- using cornflakes coated in butter, sprinkle over the top of the casserole
- bake until the cornflakes are browned
Yum!
Appetizer?
-queso and chips
- cream cheesy & veggie tortilla rolls
Dessert?
-chocolate brownies!
Drink?
- wine
- margaritas
- spiced apple cider (in the crock pot, it'd smell great all day)
What was your MIL's favorite dessert/side/app/drink and maybe make that in honor of her?
Oh. I'm sorry for your loss. How difficult for your family.
Well, here's a recipe that will be on our Thanksgiving table: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/parmesan-ro...
I know, I know. You're thinking, "Wow, broccoli. Is that the best you've got?" And I'm here to tell you, my family of 4 can go through 5 POUNDS of broccoli in a sitting if I make it this way. I promise, it's the best broccoli you have ever had, and will change the way you think about this otherwise boring vegetable. ;)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
I know the perfect list of recipes for you! I have been finding some awesome and unique recipes off this list of Thanksgiving Feast must have dishes > http://www.skinnyscoop.com/list/SkinnyScoop_Staff/the-tha...
I am a boring sides person myself but have been finding some really great dishes that I'm thinking of trying :)
All of these suggestions are great. I'm going to look up some receipes from the sites given I've been trying to think of some different things to make too, different, good and easy. How nice of others to give.
It'll be strange to have the holidays without your mother in law especially for your husband and his dad. Each year gets easier though. My dad past away on Thanksgiving and my mom past during the Christmas holidays so it made it very surreal for years, but especially the first one. Sorry for your loss and try to simply enjoy. God's Blessings to you
Cook the side dishes everyone will appreciate the effort you made. Are you going to do sweet potatoes, carrots, or green beans.
I am going to make sweet potatoes to be served with butter and carrots with ginger for the dinner I am going to.
Cranberry and feta/tortilla roll-ups, pumpkin breads/ pumpkin mousse/gingerbread cookies for appetizers. I always make a good cranberry freeze, and sweet potatoe casserole. I can give you the recipe if you would like it.
I am so sorry for your loss. While I am sure it will be hard, I think in the long run it may be so much better to be all together.
I make Barefoot Contessa's Vegetable Tian (Ina Garten)
Ingredients
Good olive oil
2 large yellow onions, cut in half and sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 pound medium round potatoes, unpeeled
3/4 pound zucchini
1 1/4 pounds medium tomatoes
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, plus extra sprigs
2 ounces Gruyere cheese, grated
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Brush a 9 by 13 by 2-inch baking dish with olive oil. In a medium saute pan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil and cook the onions over medium-low heat for 8 to 10 minutes, until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Spread the onion mixture on the bottom of the baking dish.
Slice the potatoes, zucchini, and tomatoes in 1/4-inch thick slices. Layer them alternately in the dish on top of the onions, fitting them tightly, making only 1 layer. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, thyme leaves, and thyme sprigs and drizzle with 1 more tablespoon of olive oil. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Uncover the dish, remove the thyme sprigs, sprinkle the cheese on top, and bake for another 30 minutes until browned. Serve warm.
This isn't boring ; )

It's a good sign that your father in law is preparing the turkey and ham, it shows he's trying to move on. I'm sure he's not happy about your MIL being gone, but it's a positive step. It will be hard for all, try to keep her in your spirits in a happy way. If there is something she always made why not try to replicate it, not to outdo hers but to carry on the tradition? This year will be the hardest to get through, God bless❤
Just be sure to include something your MIL really, really loved.
It's so tough--especially that first holiday after someone is gone.
Best wishes.
