Teething and Frequency of Tylenol Use

My almost 18-month-old has all four of her canines coming in at the same time. I have been giving her Tylenol off and on at night and that seems to help her sleep better. I would like to give it to her every night before bed until the teeth are in, but I'm worried she will come to expect medicine every night. We can't use motrin because it revs her up and she will never go to sleep (been there, done that!) The Tylenol seems to help her the best. So how often is too often.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Don't worry. If it is making her more comfortable, then it is
beneficial. She will not get "addicted" the medicine although (and this is probably your concern) she will really like getting the sweet taste of it every night. However, if you just stop giving it to her when she no longer needs it, she may not even notice and IF she throws a tantrum because she wants it, just explain that medicine is only for when you have owies ... and she'll move on quickly.

Hi,

We used it as often as needed to help her be comfortable. There were times when she would ask for it and it was obvious she didn't need it, just liked it. It was never an issue though. She only thought of it if it was left in plain sight. I say give it as often as needed.

I think the frequency recommendations are on the bottle. If you are in doubt, check with your pediatrician.

You really need to try the Hyland's teething tablets. They are fantastic! My 16 month old is getting his canine's as well and we use teething tablets exclusively (not tylenol or ibuprofen). They are homeopathic and completely safe. We also used them for our older child.
Get some!

If your concern is that she'll come to expect Tylenol every night you can relax. Babies, toddlers, children, adults all get used to something and are able to stop that something. Tylenol is not addictive. Using Tylenol, as directed on the bottle, every night is certainly not an overdose. Her system will have eliminated the Tylenol by the next night.

The medical concerns regarding Tylenol are related to overdosing. It must be used as directed on the package. Not an amount more than listed or more often than listed.

Have you tried "Hyland's Teething Tablets" ??? You can get them just about anywhere (walmart, freddies) and they're all natural. They were great for my daughter. Put 3-4 in the mouth and let them disssolve. She'd fall asleep instantly if her teeth were keeping her awake. I carried them around in my purse. Hylands has lots of other remedies for sinus, cold, etc.

I've been feeling bad because of recent reports linking use of acetaminophen (Tylenol etc.) in infancy with asthma! As in, a 46% higher use!

I don't know if Ibuprofen would be as effective (ask your pediatrician), but you might want to try Hyland's. I think a 46% increased risk of asthma (and other conditions) is significant.
