Teething & Ears

Our 10 mo. old daughter has been pulling at her ears. One day she was even hitting the side of her head over and over all day (did she have a headache? Maybe just realized that she could hit herself? Teething pain? Ear infection?)

Her two bottom teeth came in without much trouble, but her 1st top tooth was very painful for her, and when it FINALLY popped through, there was fleshy gum hanging from it (very gross!)
Now she's been working on teething the 2nd top front tooth and it's bulging...I'm really thinking that this is the cause of her 'odd' and fussy behavior; but does anyone know for sure if it's true that teething does cause earaches?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your thoughts and comfort on this issue!
I did take my baby girl to the Dr. today -- no infection, HOORAY! So it must be the teething, as I expected. I feel better knowing that other mom's have experienced the same with their children when teething, but feel bad for these poor babies who have to endear the pain! Thanks again, God bless!

My daughter had a similar problem. I thought she had an ear infection, and the MD said she did not. She said sometimes, especially with the upper teeth, teething can cause pain in the jaws and the ears because they are located along the same nerves in babies. I don't know how true it is but it seemed legit to me!

I had this with all three of my kids my oldest it was headaches now at 9 he has adult migrains, my younger son it was only when he had ear infections even a small one and my daughter who is 2 pulls on hers all the time i noticed if she does it all day it is an ear infection but if she just does it now and then it just she found something new. in my opinion you should call and just ask the doctor what he thinks because every kid is different. but if the child isnt crying it probably is nothing because my sons cried non stop with the headache and ear infections. i hope this helped

I think you should take your child in to the doctor. my daughter who is 12 1/2 months currently is getting over her 2nd ear infection. The 1st she was touching her one ear a lot. The 2nd she was super cranky and screaming a lot. She did not touch her ears at all, took her in anyway to find out that she has an infection in each ear. You can never be too careful. I hope this helps.

Hi N.,
Teething is often associated with ear pulling and head banging in babies is associated with being in pain. However please don't just right it off as teething pain if it's not easily righted with tylenol, or if your daughter has a fever, as ear infection can cause both these responses too.
Good luck!

Hi - I don't have too much to say other than my daughter got ear infections every time she had a tooth coming in. She's overall a healthy child [knock on wood] and that's the only time we were at the peds office besides her well checks was because of the teething/ear infections. Hope this eases your worries some. Take care!

Hello,
My son is 1 year and also would pull at his ears when teething. We even ended up at the doctors when I thought for sure he had an ear infection. But, his ears were fine.
Something that I found works is Teething tablets you can find at CVS, Wallgreens and sometimes Walmart and Target also carry them.
They are little tablets that dissolve under their tongue or in a little water. I've put them in his bottle too.
They are made by Hylands.
It's 100% Natural and has no side effects. It helps the teeth to come through the gums easier.

I hope this helps:) I feel your pain as my son is getting his 9th tooth now:)

I can tell you that my daughter, when she was teething DID indeed pull and tug at her ears. We had a well baby check up during the time she was doing that and our dr. assured us her ears were fine and it must be the teething.....I am not a dr. but IF her ears were checked it'd be my guess that it was teething!! Good luck!

It could be from teething, but the only way to know for sure is to take her to the Dr for an exam. My daughter has had several ear infections, the only sign was pulling at her ears and the side of her face. She wouldn't get a cold, or a fever, which is common with ear infections. So, to be sure, I'd take her to be checked. but, yes, tooth pain can cause ear and head pain...the nerves are all right there. in the meantime, try giving your daughter some tylenol.

It is totally normal to have an ear ache and even run a low grade fever with teething. My son had horrible time teething though. He would get a runny nose with his teeth getting ready to break through, and that would lead to an ear infection and sinus infection! He was a little older when he teethed though, with the first tooth not breaking through til just before his first birthday!
They have ear drops that you can get over the counter for infants ears. You may want to try that. I would suggest getting him checked out by a doctor if she has signs of congestion with the ear ache. With the weather changing and such, ear infections are very possible.

My son plays with his ears all the time, sticking his finger in them, ever since he discovered he has them!
I use the infant tylenol when he's teething, too ease the pain.
If you have any doubt though I would make a doctor's appt. too, just for your piece of mind.

Best Wishes!!

yes teething and ear aches are very common together.... the teeth are on nerves that are connected or near the ears... this can cause a lot of pain.... best thing is Popsicles and tylonol if you dont mind giving her meds but if she keeps up the ear pulling take her to the doctor just to make sure its not an infection

My daughter did the same thing, she had six teeth that came in at once, trust me it wasnt the best time in our lives, but she did pull at her ears alot, because of the tooth pain, baby tylenol and motrin work great, switch on and off, one time tylenol and then 4-6 hrs. later, motrin, it worked great for me and my little one, good luck!

My dr. once told me that teething is the worst pain that a child goes through. I was also told that the reason that they rub the jaw and ear area is because it soothes or comforts them. If your child has an ear infection, you will know. Symptoms of an ear infection are a cold with conjestion and the dreaded up all night, can't be comforted at all, constant crying with pain. Usually with teething your child is a bit more fussy and cranky. Give a dose of motrin since you know that it is PAINFUL for your child to be going through the teething blues.
