My almost 5 month old daughter has been more difficult then when it comes to sleeping at night. She seems way crankier than usual and is harder to put down for bed and after her 11pm feeding. She's also a bit more difficult to please during the day. She is drooling a lot also. When I feel her gums, I think I can feel teeth just under the surface on the top, in the front. But everything I read says the first teeth to come in are the bottom two front. I'm at a loss... and very, very tired. Any input?
OK, get this... I was way off on the teething. Last Thursday she was cranky, crying, unhappy all day. DH, who takes care of her during the day, decided to bring her to the pediatrician to get her checked out. He told me, 'I'm not leaving without answers". Well, she blew a gasket in front of the doc. and was completely inconsolable (her usual schtick). The doctor checked her eyes, ears, nose, teeth, felt her tummy and said she seems ok, but crying like that is not normal, and wanted us to go to the hospital for tests (blood, urine, CT of the brain, etc.) She said with an infant you don't want to miss something like a bladder infection or G-d forbid menengitis. Well all checked out (btw, watching my baby get cathed while she is screaming just about ripped my heart out - the blood draw was no walk in the park either). They also decided to do an x-ray of her GI track and it showed that she is constipated. A little, not a lot. Somewhat surprising since she does poop just about every day and her belly is soft. We'll the dr. said 1oz prune juice/2 oz water 2x day. It really seems to have helped. She is a happier baby and is sleeping somewhat better at night. I also believe that some her issues involve her temperament. She is a very perceptive baby... totally aware of her surroundings and the people around her and she is also at the age where she is not completely comfortable with strangers. Therefore if she is in a place where she is not comfortable with people she doesn't know AND feeling constipated-cranky... she becomes completely unhinged. Anyway, thank you all for your input. Being a first time mom is, as you all know, kind of a figure it out as you go type of thing and its wonderful to have your help.

The best solution we found is an Amber teething necklace. Baby doesn't bite on the beads, rather she wears it and the natural analgesic properties of the amber work through the skin.
Doubtful? So were we, but it worked very well anyway.
Also consider that it is relatively inexpensive, pretty, and has no side effects.
You find these online- google amber teething beads.

Theres not a particular order of how they come in (top or bottom).. My sons came in top 2 first... All the signs your saying are for teething.. My 18 month old son has his last molar coming in (wait until they come in, lol).. My son drools and actually sometimes gets a rash on his chin from the drool.. I just give him Motrin or Tylenol to ease the pain, especially when I put him down for bed at night..
Good luck!

hi J.,
my 7 month old son is also teething right now. he gets a bit cranky at times too. i find that when he cries non-stop and "gums" his teeth, that half a dose of tylenol drops help to ease his pain and calm him down. i'm not really one for giving him tylenol often, so i only give it to him when i see he is clearly hurting, and even at that, i only give him half the recomended dose.
also, i was under the impression that his bottom front teeth would be the first to arrive, however, in his case, he has two teeth on the top that have begun to cut through. unfortunately, they aren't the two front teeth, they are the teeth next to the front teeth. the poor kid looks like he has fangs!!!! i sure hope some other teeth follow quickly!!! anyhow, my point is that i think all kids are different, and not to worry about which teeth are the first to arrive. just watch your daughter for fevers and earaches that sometimes accompany teething!
good luck!!
ps. my son also acted cranky, difficult to please, and restless for a few weeks before i noticed the teeth break through. so you just might be seeing some teeth very soon!!!! however, don't be surprised if you don't see them for a few more months! teething can be very unpredictable!!!

Teething Tablets from Whole Foods help a lot. And you can give her Baby Tylenol if she's really upset. Also put a wet washcloth in the freezer for her to suck on. They say the first tooth is the worst!
