Tax Situation

my soon to be ex husband and I filed for an extension this year and after supposedly his sister who has a degree in accounting was going to do the taxes and file them. Well, that didn't happen and now it needs to get done, its almost the end of the year! we will more than likely own some money as my soon to be ex did an initial run of it. My question is: at this point we could just file them ourselves but does anyone use a tax person they would recommend that would be reasonable? I really want to get this done. It will be a joint file as we are not yet divorced. Thanks for your help!

Are you sure you need to be divorced to file seperately? I filed jointly with my ex a few years ago and was told I could file seperately. I wish I had because 'we' ended up owing and I ended up paying over $3,000. If I had filed seperately I would not have owed anything.

Definitely use an accountant - the small fee will more than make up for just getting it done quickly and efficiently. We use Fox Tax in Minneapolis, like them very much. They do specialize in doing taxes for artists (and artistic businesspeople) but there's no reason why they can't do your taxes. http://www.foxtaxservice.com/

There are many many small tax companies around, you'll get better service (for less money) from choosing one of them. Good luck!

At work we use ROR Financial. They are really nice and understanding, not expensive (last year they charged less than my friend who went to H&R Block). They're located in St. Louis Park.

We use Lynda Mohs' Tax Service. She's in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul, just a few blocks from Cleveland and Ford. I've gone to H&R Block in the past, and Mohs is a fraction of the cost. The people are very friendly and really took the time to work with us. Good luck!

Sooner is definitely better as you are accruing penalties if you do actually owe taxes. An extension is only good for filing your taxes, not for paying your taxes (those always have to be paid by April 15th).
