I have had several occasions lately to talk to people who are wearing sunglasses, and I find it really awkward, I don't know where to look at them because I can't see where their eyes are. So I think, am I looking in their eyes, or maybe just below their eyes? does it look weird to them because I am looking at their eyebrows?
I always take my sunglasses off when I am having a conversation, because I find it a little rude to talk to someone when I can't see their eyes! Am I alone here?
Yeah, it is a weird question, and if it is bright and sunny and shining in their eyes, then fine. My eyes are sensitive too, I was just wondering.

I have a problem with light sensitivity, so if I'm outside and the sun is out, my sunglasses are on. Sorry if you don't know where to look, usually just looking in the direction of the eyes is enough. Maybe since I don't wear reflective sunglasses, I've never had anyone say anything?
If people are wearing them indoors, though, that's pretty douchey and they should take them off.
Otherwise, I find this to be a weird question, as if you're outside on a sunny day, people are going to wear sunglasses. It's just how it is, they aren't being rude.

I can understand where you are coming from......but there is no way I can take them off outside. My eyes are super sensitive to the sun and will hurt and tear up if really bright. If not....You may have a hard time talking to me while I am squinting at you ;).

Huh...didn't even realize this was a "thing".
If I'm outside, I'm wearing my sunglasses. I have light blue eyes and wear contacts. I can barely open my eyes if the sun is shining. I can't even open them if it's a cloudy day, but there's a bit of glare. It never even occurred to me to take off my sunglasses...Am I really being that rude? Never even occurred to me...

I'm not sure there's much of a difference from the perspective of the person wearing the sunglasses. I don't think I would notice if you were actually looking at my eyebrows as opposed to my eyeballs.
I just kind of look into their sunglasses and don't really think much about it.

If I am outside my sunglasses are ON, they are big and black too, it HURTS my eyes to not have them on. So, if you want them off then go inside to speak to me, I have even been known to wear them in *some* stores at sunset b/c the sun comes in just right thru the windows. I also do not notice if someone is looking at my eyebrows or not when we are talking... honestly, looking in the general direction of my face works.

Ooops! Sorry. I have very light blue eyes which are really sensitive, to the point where if its just overcast I will feel like my eyes are burning out of my head if I am not wearing my sunglasses.
Im hoping people would rather look at my sunglasses than my burning watering eyes.
Kinda crazy what people find rude these days. Dang! Cant catch a break!
No, to be honest, I would rather not talk to someone who would be offended by that.

For general conversation with people, I just look into their beautiful sunglasses. I don't worry about it. If the conversation gets so weird that I wonder if the person is really *hiding* behind those shades, then I know I need to conclude it.
As has been mentioned, some people wear those transitional lenses all the time. If they take their currently-dark glasses off, they may not see you at all. Others have problems with bright sunlight (said she, from a state which boasts of over 300 days of sunshine per year).
On the other hand, if there is going to be some serious talk, it's probably best to get out of the bright sunlight into some shade and undisguise the eyeballs on both sides.

I don't regularly wear sunglasses , but no this has never bothered M.. I just look at the glasses I guess:) And many times I can see their eyes through it. But seriously, why is it difficult to make a conversation without looking at their eyes? You still get to look at their face :)
And I don't remember anyone actually taking out their sunglasses to talk to M. when we are outside. I wouldn't expect anyone to do that either.
But yes , some people wear them indoors and I really hate that. Not sure why they do that.

I have a friend I do this to all the time. He's always clueless why I'm...Oh. My sunglasses. Right. Flipped up on his head.
I honestly don't care if people leave them on or take them off. He just has SUCH GREAT ones I can't resist.

Funny you should ask because just last week I was in the same situation - felt really weird looking at the mom I was talking to b/c she was wearing sunglasses. I had no clue where to look b/c I couldn't see her eyes - instead I could only see my reflection! Weird! We were standing in the shade at the time, but it was sunny everywhere else. Perhaps I looked uncomfortable with my eye-contact and that's why she took off her sunglasses? I dunno, but it was way more comfortable when she took them off. I am not one to stand in front of a mirror and talk to myself, and that's exactly how I felt.

oooh! I hate that! I find it so awkward!! If we both have sunglasses on, then COOL. But, if the other person doesn't, then I ALWAYS take mine off, just respectful, Right?! And, if I have to talk to someone that has glasses and aren't removing them, and I don't have mine, then ALL I can think about during the conversation is, I WISH I HAD MY SUNGLASSES BECAUSE THIS IS AWKWARD!!!! LOL!!!

It bothers some people not to have eye contact during a conversation.
But eye contact doesn't matter that much to me most of the time.
You can look at their shoulder, nose, eyebrows or left ear if you need a focal point.

I have prescription glasses, that get tinted in light/the sun.
So I can't help it if I am talking to someone and my glasses are tinted.
If a take off my glasses, the person and everything around me will be blurry.
I also live in Hawaii, where the sun is very strong and depending on the time of day, the glare and sun direction is very strong as well.
It does not bother me, at all... if someone has glasses/sunglasses on or not, when I am talking to them. I just talk to them, as I normally would if they were not wearing glasses/sunglasses. I talk to them, to their eyes. But in a normal way.
Before I had prescription glasses, I would take off my sunglasses, while talking to someone... unless the sun was bothering me. My eyes are also sensitive to light and glare.

For someone who is sensitive to light...sunlight being one big blinder. I think it would be nice if you just looked in the middle of there sunglasses. Some ppl have issues other than being polite. What if they had a black eye, or just went to the eye doc, or have a headache and the light is bothering them

It depends on where the conversation is taking place and under what circumstances. I wear glasses. So my sunglasses are prescription as well. If I take them off, I can't see.
Usually, I will take them off in the car and put my regular glasses back on before going into a building, but some days it is just TOO bright to do that. If I run into someone in the parking lot and end up chatting, I am NOT taking them off, sorry. If I am outside walking (think an outdoor mall type area) and only plan to duck into a well lit store for a moment, I am not ALWAYS, each and every time, going to dig my regular glasses out of my purse, swap them with my sunglasses, then walk around for 90 seconds, then dig my sunglasses back out, and swap them out again, before walking back outside onto the street for 2 minutes and then do it all over again when walking for 30 seconds into the next spot to see if they are a place I want to browse in for longer.
It isn't going to happen. Too much of a hassle, too much increased risk of dropping a pair during the standing swap with both hands full in a crowded space, too much worry about knocking something else out of my purse, etc.
Generally, I try to be considerate about wearing them or not wearing them, but the bottom line is I have to have SOME kind of glasses on in order to see. Convenience/hassle/logic will often dictate which pair that will be at any given moment.

I Wonder this ALL the time.
I know the person wearing them probably isn't even Concious that I can't see their eyes, but I reallly really rely on eye contact to give me social cues, like was that a joke and your eyes are smiling or are you blinking behind those shades and feeding me a line of bull?? are you paying any attention to me or are you watching the hot guy downt the street behind me, what's that awkward pause all about???
I for one would really really appreciate someone tearing up for a min and removing their raybans--exceptions given for the elderly.

I always take sunglasses off inside or in a drive through but otherwise I can't stand sun in my eyes. So I see no problem with people who do the same.
Those are the reasons I take my sun glasses off, whether I am in a conversation doesn't matter.

I live in WA state where we don't see a lot of sun. So when it comes out EVERYONE is in sunglasses. If we don't have them on I am sure the sun would burn our eyes straight to the retna.
I don't find it awkward at all.....unless we are inside and then I wonder what they are trying to hide.

Sunglasses indoors remind me of all the horrible interviews you see on tv with doped up celebrities who don't want you to see their eyes. Ha.
If they wear them in doors, it is strange, but if they keep them on while we are talking outdoors in the sun, this doesn't bother me. I don't have to see their eyes to conversate.

I don't think this is a weird question, I have wondered the same for a long time....I feel uncomfortable talking to someone who is wearing sunglasses.I like looking to people's eyes while talking, so when I am the one who is wearing sunglasses, I take them off, and if the sun is too bright, I ask if I can put them on again.....but most of the time I put them in my handbag.

S., just for fun, I want to tell you that I took a regular pair of sunglasses with me to Singapore when I visited there several years ago. The sun was SO bright, that I couldn't hardly open my eyes with my regular sunglasses. I was squinting so that I could stay with my friends without running into them while we were outside.
I finally got to a store that carried sunglasses and bought the darkest ones I could find, praying that they weren't Chinese knockoffs that just "say" UVB/UVA ray proof. I wore them all the time outside, and my light ones inside if there were lots of windows.
I don't think I've EVER been anywhere else where the sun shined so brightly!!
Funny to think about now!

I get this all the time when I'm at work. I have clients come into the building and don't take the sunglasses off. Now our lobby is bright, I understand why they wouldn't take them off but it is very awkward to talk to someone when you can't see their eyes and I find that I am moderately uncomfortable with the situation. If I am talking to a person then the sunglasses come off unless we are both outside when they are needed.
