Anti-glare Lenses for New Glasses??

Hi Moms,
I know this is a pretty mundane question, but...I had a good deal from Groupon for new glasses. The salesperson suggested anti-glare coating for an additional $90+. I already upgraded $120 for Progressive lenses. So now this is getting expensive! Is it worth $90 for anti-glare? I'm happy to pay it if it really makes a big difference in how you see and how your glasses look. Anyone have an opinion about this? I wear contacts also, so glasses will not be worn all the time. But if it's a good investment...
Thanks. Would love your feedback!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great tips everyone! Really appreciate it. I bit the bullet and got both the Progressive (for distance and up close without lines) and the anti-glare. Everyone I talked to seemed to like the anti glare and the price wasn't too far off from other places I called. Thanks for helping me decide!

I've heard differing opinions on this. I recently spent the extra $100 on the anti-glare coating and have been very pleased with it so far. It seems to make a significant difference to me when driving at night - cuts down on the hazy halo around lights. I would go for it if you do any night driving.

I would get the anti glare before getting progressive. I had a pair of progressive before and loved them. The last pair not as much. Not sure if it's because the range between my eyes is greater or what but my eyes feel better when I wear distance and reading (hate swapping though....)

I would definitely get the anti-glare...but agree that seems REALLY expensive. It is just a coating on the lenses. I am pretty sure that I am paying less than half of that.

if you are night blind like i am well worth the money. you cant tell any diffrence in how you look as far as no tint or anything on the glasses. I couldnt see the center line while driving until I got mine. I wouldnt drive at night at all I will all the time now.

I pay for anti-glare because I have night vision problems and I find it helps me able to see clearly when there are a lot of headlights. Ask them to show you a coated vs non coated lens and see if you like the difference. I was "prescribed" them several years ago and won't go without it now.

I have it on my glasses, and I like it. Not only because it really helps at night, but when other people look at me, they don't see the glare off of my glasses either. But 90 bucks? That seems really high, since it's just a coating they put on it. I think mine were an additional 30 or 40.

My personal opinion is that $90.00 is way above the market rate for anti-glare coating. Makes me wonder if that's a part of the low cost coupon and then all the other extras are pricey.
I wear contacts pretty much except at bedtime and only have glasses for nighttime at home, emergencies. I wouldn't get the anti-glare unless you will be wearing the glasses alot.

The anti-glare is great for driving or working with computers or with office lighting. It also cuts down on the glare while driving.

I have progressive lens and it does take time to get use to them. I have been wearing them now for over 25 years and like them especially while sewing or doing close up work.

But if you are not going to wear your glasses all the time you may get away with it and wear sunglasses.

In fact you could get a prescription for sunglasses and be done with it.

PS You only get one set of eyes so do treat them well.

This one is just bells and whistles, as far as I'm concerned. I had to have it removed after paying the extra – fingerprints or smudges actually show up better, and if any of these are on the INSIDE surface of the lens, they would actually interfere with clear vision and drive me kinda nuts. I wanted BETTER vision, not WORSE vision. When I took them in to have the coating polished off, my optometrist said he'd had a few other patients with the same problem.

From outside the lenses, it is a pretty, jewel-like effect, though – just a delicate suggestion of green or purple sparkle, depending on the light and the angle. And if there are no smudges, people probably can see your eyes just a little better.

I would only say to do it if you are going to wear them all the time. I wear contacts all day and wear my glasses at bedtime. I have really bad eyes. I have to have the featherweight lenses (expensive) so I try to keep everything else to a minimum. But, if you are going to wear them out at night especially, you may want to. I heard it helps with the lights.

I am new to wearing glasses (came with age, lol..) and I have 2 pairs, one with anti-glare (progressive) and one without (just distance). The progressives are hard for me to get used to, so I don't wear them much, and I am finding myself using the distance pair to drive with and essentially getting used to wearing glasses. But, I am always wishing that pair had the anti-glare! So, yes, it does make a big difference, and yes it is expensive, but well worth it!

If they are just something you wear occasionally then I probably wouldn't spend the extra. But, if you are like me... as your life gets busier and busier... I started wearing my glasses more and more and my contacts less and less. Now I only wear my contacts on "special" occasions, lol. (like golfing, when I want ALL my peripheral vision, lol)

It does make a difference if you wear your glasses frequently... and also in how they appear in photos.
