Table Foods for 9 Month Old

Per the advice of our pediatrician, we are skipping Stage 3 foods and are going right to table foods for our 9 month old daughter. She has 8 teeth and seems to do well with chewing and texture. I am just terribly uncreative when it comes to this. I have given her French toast, crackers, Cheerios, canned and steamed vegetables, spaghetti, small pieces of tender chicken and soup. Is there anything else that your babies love?

Also, how much do you expect your kids to eat at this age? I sort of feel like this is more for introducing the concept of feeding herself and to introduce her to different flavors and textures. I usually give her whatever she want to feed herself and then follow up with a 1/2 jar of baby fruit or vegetables.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your responses! To be clear, she does get 24 to 32 ounces of formula a day. And last night I gave her bits of the soup my husband made for dinner and she gobbled it up. Our son was so much more reluctant to eat table foods at this age so because of my experience, I wasn't expecting her to be such an enthusiastic eater! What a nice surprise.

Our pediatrician said to hold off on eggs and dairy, including cheese and yogurt, until age one. Our son has a sesame seed allergy so we need to be on the safe side with our daughter.

Other than that, I will try your ideas and definitely keep giving her what we eat. This is fun! I'm not used to a baby eating so well :)

At that age, my little one ate pretty much everything: little quiche, all the different types of vegetables including beets, spinach, brussel sprouts cut up and all fruit: raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, blueberries, and she would eat pizza pieces cut up very small, meat cut up very small, shepard's pie, mac and cheese, pasta. She loved roasted sweet potatoes. It was around 14 months that she developed a decided ability to say she didn't want to eat anything except: chicken nuggets, fish fingers, pasta, pizza etc. I read it is developmentally appropriate behavior but it suprised me as she ate everything in site up until she was just over 1. good luck.

steam veggies and fruits to make them softer, otherwise the same as you eat. I have a full menu with 5 weeks worth of foods on it at http://www.freewebs.com/tarastoyland and I start at about 10 mos old giving some of each thing to the babies when I feed the older kids. By 12 mos all kids are eating what is on that menu.

That being said, the nutrients and iron in the infant cereal are hard to replace in other ways so please keep feeding them infant cereal until they are a year old. You can mix it into sauces, yogurts, etc or coat fresh fruit in it, so it doesn't have to be spoon fed, but it is an essential part of the infant nutrition.

My 11 month still gets most of her nutrition from milk, but she seems to like little foods she can pick up. She enjoys cucumbers, peas, black beans, mashed potatoes, green beans (I give her long ones and she chews on them). When you cook for yourself, put aside a little of what you're making before adding salt, red sauce or spices. Now's the time to make sure you're eating healthy, balanced meals because soon she's going to be eating what you're eating. I started meal planning when my toddler was about a year so he'd get all the nutrients he needed and now so do I.

E.,

As a nutritionist, just remember that formula or breastmilk is still their main source of calories and food is just the supplement till around 11-12m. And 75% of their brains develop during the first two years of life, so good fatty foods are very important! Avocados, hummus, white beans are an excellent foods, mix it with EVOO a little balsamic vinegar or white vinegar, not as strong, dash of sea salt, pepper and oregano. Email me, I have a list of good foods you can give to her through toddler years.

Also giving her some DHA when she is done with formula will still be important, so Nordic Naturals Children's DHA is an excellent, pure and clean brand. 400 iu of Vitamin D3 is also important b/c we lack sunlight in the midwest, though you may get more in the Nati being so far south. You can find it all online.

Hope you are enjoying Ohio!

It sounds like you have a good start with what you are feeding her. My daughter loves yogurt, bananas (on the riper side) gerber puffs(stars), I make homemade bread and melt cheese on it, and pancakes. I let her eat as much as she wants, she is under weight for her age and pretty petite. She lets me know if she is still hungry.
Good luck,
K.

Macaroni and cheese-homemade, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. You cold consult a soft food diet menu.
I had been advised by mt Pediatrician, minimum of 1 Tblsp of each food group for each year of age, is enough nutritionally for a child. Sounds like your doing fine, the biggest thing is getting in enough fluids to address increase of fibered foods.

what do you eat yourself?? with 8 teeth you are blessed and I would say give her pretty much anything you eat. Of course I would chop very small for choking purposes, but this would not require much imagination. I would watch things like pretzels and hard things such as that;chips, doritos and the like. Good luck!!! J.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Give her everything you & your husband eat. For some creative healthy ideas, a great and super easy book I used for my 4 kids was "Baby Let's Eat!" by Rena Coyle. Some other ideas are mashed or steamed potatoes, pasta, yams, rice, applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. The book gives great details about portions, nutritional values, & it breaks down foods for specific ages. It also gives you weekly menu ideas.

At this point you can give her anything that she can gum or slightly chew as long as it is in smaller chuncks. Carrots are a no no because they are too hard...unless you steam them a little first.

Yogurt,
cottage cheese,
cheese chunks from a block in little bites
hot dogs cut in half and then half again and then little bites
grapes cut into fours
grits
creme of wheat
scrambled eggs
noodles
potatoes
small bites of apple, pears, peaches....
