Feeding My 1 Year Old... Ideas???

My son has decided to skip over things like cheerios and 'puffs' and toast (I've tried toasting light, dark, with or w/o a topping), he just doesn't care for that texture yet, and may never!! He likes baby goldfish, he'll occasionally sneak in a yogurt covered cheerio, loves nilla wafers, graham crackers, saltines, ritz, arrowroot cookies, food in the fresh food feeder like melon or frozen banana chunks to help w/ teething. He's almost done w/ stage 3 baby foods, he had a sharp gag reflex until recently and our ped. suggested staying w/ stage 3 until that went away on it's own... now he's an avid self feeder with the items I listed above. He loves yogurt, fork mashed banana, fork mashed baked butternut squash, cottage cheese w/ fruit blended and added...He seems frustrated if I try to feed him now that he knows how to do it... I would love some ideas for finger foods that are everyday items or easy to prepare and store. Fruits, veggies, anything that he could feed himself that has been a big hit for other mommys :) Just throw ideas at me please!!!

What can I do next?

Hi Sarah,

My kids did well with scrambled eggs, any kind of dry cereal, grilled cheese sandwiches (cut into bites), and anything they could steal from our plates. Before we knew it they were eating tiny bites of steak, green beans, corn, chicken, etc. When they were young, we cut everything we ate into tiny (maybe 1/4" by 1/4") bites and let them try it. Some things were good -- like meat. Other things weren't -- like bagels with cream cheese. My 3 year old still chokes at the texture of cream cheese. They'll let you know what they like and what they don't. We even gave our kids grapes (cut in half the long way, then cut twice across the short way to make a total of 6 pieces). Enjoy letting your little one try new things. If he doesn't like something, wait and try it again in a few months.

Good luck!!

We've been feeding Owen grilled cheese, which he loves! He also eats canned green beans, peas and carrots. Jell-O Jigglers are a treat - he loves them and it turns his hands and face whatever color the Jell-O is! He loves Mandarin Oranges and cut up canned peaches and canned sweet potatoes - of course all of these could be fresh too. He's pretty much off of baby food except for the occasional fruit or yogurt. It's hard to get him to eat meat of vegies out of a jar.

Good luck!

keep doing what you are doing, but, get creative with the food, make the mashed stuff into small bit sized balls that your babe can pick up on his own!

HI,
It is hard to come up with new things to feed them isnt it? I would suggest frozen mini pancakes-my toddler loves them and they are great when teething. Also Scooby shaped mac and cheese, Gogurt sticks (yogurt)that he will let you feed him since it doesnt involve a spoon, pasta pickups-tolder food, cut up and peel apples, grapes, strawberries, plums and pretty much any fruit. You could also steam different veggies so they are soft to give him. Maybe he would like reg. bread cut into little pieces.

My 9 month old is at the point now where she no longer wants to be fed also. I've found that she likes green beans, sliced carrots and steamed baby carrots, basically any type of fruit or veggie that is easy to hold or can be cut into like wedges is good. My 4 yr old never would eat jar baby food and just went straight on table food, a big hit with him was spaghetti. The baby also likes it, macaroni and cheese is good too. French fries are another food that both liked and fed themselves easily, with Ciara I started getting the sweet potato french fries since that was one of her favorite jar foods and this way she can feed herself. Basically anything that you eat I've found that babies can eat safely. I hope that this helps you.

Since my little one's first birthday, my girls pretty much eat the same things now...they love macaroni and cheese, frozen chicken nuggets(tyson dinosaurs and morningstar farms veggie nuggets), scrambled eggs, quartered cherry tomatoes, any fruits-esp. mandarin oranges, granola munch 'ems-good source of whole grain, i also buy stoney field farms whole milk yogurt then add milk to the consistency i want for yogurt smoothies that you can put in a sippy cup-no mess:) I also bought a mini chopper for veggies and meat, just mix the finely chopped veggies and/or meat in with pasta, rice, macaroni or whatever then you don't have to worry about cutting them into tiny pieces, this has saved me tons of time and I think my girls eat more of the vegetable/meat that way...oh and if you are into ethnic foods tofu is an awesome source of protein...my oldest is not a big fan of meat so tofu is a regular thing for us...I hope this has been helpful! Best Wishes:)
