Hi,

I am having a bit of a problem with switching my son from Advance Isomil Soy formula to milk. The ped. suggested at 12 mo's Soy milk he broke out into hives then tried whole milk but broke out again. Grrrrrr. He has no problem drinking it, it's just that he seems to be allergic! Today, I figure I would try organic whole milk. I hope he takes to this if not I am not sure what other type of milk to try.
Help!

So What Happened?

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Thank-yo so much foryour advice and suggestions. Donte has been on organic whole milk for two weeks now half isomil, half whole milk. Thank-God he isn't breaking out with it and doesn't seem to know the difference. Next week I am going to go 3/4 with the milk and then go for the whole 8 oz. You ladies are all so wonderful and great, soon as i seen all the responses it gave me more confidence to "just do it". And of course the instinct of a mother "knowing" what to try next. Thank-you so much for the several suggestions and on-going support!

Sincerely,

C.

Hi C., If I were you I would start with the soy milk mixing it with the formula. Add more and more of the soy milk gradually (as long as he is not breaking out in hives etc) and less of the formal til he is on it completely. This should take at least a week or two. If he has a reaction to the soy milk try rice milk. If he reacts to that then I would get him tested for allergies. Good luck.

I agree that maybe trying rice milk would work, but think about it nutritionally, why give milk? If it is for the calcium or vitamin D, feed other foods high in that... Why go through all these problems if you don't have to! Of course ask Dr. If you see these problems with foods made with the ingredients, testing for allergies may be a good idea to find out what it is specifically. Wait a couple months and try soy milk, cow's milk again.

I don't think I would try almond milk because you run a high risk of a nut allergy. My suggestion would be enriched rice milk.

Personally my daughters were breastfed and never took to 'drinking' milk. They drink water all the time.

Have you ever thought of trying goat's milk? I know it is a little harder to come by but I have raised 2 of 4 children on it. After they were around 1 1/2 they were fine with all other milks. My 19 month old has been on it since he was a month old as could not tolerate any other formula or anything. I think it works great. The doctors recommend adding folic acid though as does not have much of that and you can get a shaklee infant vitamin powder that has that it in. If you have any questions regarding goat's milk feel free to email me as have been around it for 5 years and using it.

Try goat's milk. It is easier to digest and generally doesn't cause any problems, even in people that are lactose intolerant. Goat's milk can be found near the Lactaid milk in most grocery stores. It usually comes in quarts, not half gallons so look for the smaller container. Also, have you tried whole milk yogurt? Has he had any problems with that? Best of luck!

What kind of soy milk did you try? It might not be the soy itself, but in fact the additional ingredents. You could try rice milk.

They weren't allergic, but my SIL gave her kids rice milk exclusively after breast feeding. Also, ask your pediatrician for their rec's. Good luck!

When I was a baby, my mother had a similar problem with me. She ended up raising me on non-fat dry milk. Maybe that would work for you.

Here is some hope for you...I grew out of it. I can drink just about any kind of milk or milk-based product without a problem. I sometimes have problems with whole milk but only if I try to drink it.

Both of my boys have food allergies and they drink Rice Dream rice milk. I buy the original flavor that is enriched with extra nutrients. It compares to the nutritional value of skim milk. If your child is reating to the cows' milk and soy milk, he could be allergic to both the milk protein and soy protein. Contact your pediatrican again and request a food allergy panel test. It is a blood test and you will have the results in a week. Be cautious of goat's milk - it contains the similiar protein as cow's milk and if he is truly allergic he may be to goat's milk too. Lactose free milk is for those who are lactose intolerant (can not process the sugars in milk) and if he is allergic to either the milk or soy protein Lactaid will not help him. My boys were tested for milk, soy, peanuts, egg, and wheat. They are allergic to many of them. Now that we have cut it out of their diets and found other replacements, both are happy, healthy, and better sleepers because their skin doesn't itch or bellies hurt.

try lactaid milk. it has no lactose in it. some kids are lactose intolerant. i am surpised that he got hives from the soy milk. my son drinks the soy and has no problems. the lactaid is good for people who like milk but can not drink it due to the lactose intolerance issues. good luck and happy holidays.
