Switching from Bottle to Sippy Cup with a Baby Who Still Spits Up

My 11-month-old still spits up. With the bottle, it is much less frequent than it used to be; however, it fairly prevalent as we've been trying to introduce a Sippy Cup. I'm just wondering if other moms have gone through this, and what strategies you used to minimize the spit up during this transition. We are using the NUBY soft nipple Sippy Cup, with two handles.

My husband and I were hoping that as our daughter approaches her first birthday, spit up would be a thing of the past. No such luck yet!

What can I do next?

Do you notice if she's spitting up more after certain foods? Have you introduced any dairy yet? Spitting up a lot at that age may be more of a food sensitivity than an issue with the cup. Kids are still sometimes pretty sensitive to dairy products at 11 months, so if you've tried introducing some diary, it could be that. You should talk to your pediatrician about it.

If it is the cup and she's sucking in too much air, I'd suggest waiting a couple of months and re-introducing it. Maybe she's just not quite ready.

Most children this age spit up because they are either drinking too fast or are getting to much air when they drink.Try to get her to slow down when she drinks and maybe it will help.

Is she spitting up little tiny amounts, or seriously spewing all over you? Does it smell acid-y? If so, you might want to check with your doctor about acid reflux. Both of my kids had it, and we sometimes had to use bath towels as burp cloths.

Maybe she is gulping too much air with trying to drink from the cup? Or maybe it would be easier for her with a straw-type sippy cup? Just random thoughts... I think, though, since she's doing it with both the bottle and cup, that it's probably something going on in her tummy, rather than an issue with the cup.

P.S. I feel like I answer "acid reflux" to many questions here... LOL! I just have plenty of experience with it so I guess that's the first thing I think of! :)

My daughter is 10 months old and like you I thought we'd be done with the spit up by now! It's slowed a lot since birth but it still is pretty frequent. She does take a sippy cup but just with water and doesn't seem to have a problem, although it's just water.
Anyway just wanted to say you're not alone in dealing with a late spitter-upper!

do you have to switch to sippy cups yet? it sounds like she's swallowing more air with the sippy.... maybe you could use bottles with handles (avent has sippy/bottles with handles, you might be able to use the handles with a bottle nipple?) so she can be more grown up...
