I am a first time mom to a 6 month old little girl. Pre-baby I used to sleep like it was going out of style. I love sleep and ideally would like 9 hours a night. Needless to say these first few months have been pretty hard on me getting up to nurse 2-3 times a night and then waking up very early. But my daughter is sleeping much better. Only gets up 1-2 times per night, nurses for 10 min and then I put her in her crib and she goes back to sleep. The problem is now I have insomnia. I usually wake up between 3:30 and 4:30 and can't get back to sleep for hours. It is usually because I hear one of our cats and then my mind starts racing and I start thinking about every dumb thing imaginable. Even songs go through my head. Last night was the worst. I woke up from the cat at 3:30 and just started to get sleepy at about 6:00 am and then my daughter woke up. What can I do. I was crying this morning because during her morning nap, I layed in bed so tired for an hour but never fell asleep! Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm starting to sleep better (yay)! I think the biggest thing that has helped me has been to give myself permission to stay awake if I wanted or to go to sleep. I'm trying to take the stress out of sleeping. The more I obess, the worse it would be. I also turned the clock away from my vision so I wouldn't know what time it was. This has totally helped since if it was after 4:00 am I would start stressing about getting up soon. I'm also drinking sleepy time tea or having a glass of wine to relax. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

Cheers on your 6 month old. I am having a blast with my daughter. As for the insomnia ...what are some things you can do to relax? I think sometimes as new moms we are busy taking care of everything thing else ... especially the little one, that we forget to take care of ourselves. My big "me time" was a long, hot shower after putting my daughter to bed. That helped relax me and allowed me to sleep. I will confess though, I have become a light sleeper ... now I can hear my daughter opening her door down the hall. As for the dumb thoughts ... I am sure if we all compared notes, our random thoughts and panics in the middle of the night would make a great story! :}

Good luck and remember ... take care of yourself. You cannot be superwoman 24/7 - you need some TLC for yourself on occasion.

Alexis said it for sure, tea! Decafe of course but most teas are now a days. You can also get just plain chamomile tea. Peppermint also works because it’s a muscle relaxer. I give it to my husband all the time when he can't sleep and I also put in a spoonful of honey. Makes it go down easier. Lavender works very well too. Get a lotion or bath oil and breathe it in. Also someone else said vitamins. You should take those too, you may not be able to sleep because your body is lacking in something. Good luck!

I have the same problem sometimes and for me the trick is Bigelow brand's Sleepytime tea. It's a mix of mint and chamomile and other relaxing yummy stuff. Hope this helps!

ACK! You described me to a "T" after having my last baby! Hard to go to sleep and once I was there I would be awakened very easily! I was so tired I would cry. I was afraid I would drop the baby! I ended up on a special vitamin that has not only helped with my sleep, but my energy level is up also! I would love to share more information if your interested. email me a time to call and your number! Momma! You need sleep! ____@____.com

Hi K.!
Soooo sorry to hear that. I totally know what you mean! I'm sorry, I don't have the link, but on the Kaiser website there is a list of free downloadable guided imagery topics and one is sleep. I did hypnosis for my childbirth (which worked!) and so I was looking for something similar to help me sleep. Perhaps it might work for you?
