Stuffy Nose and Bulb Syringes

My 9 month old daughter has her first cold and a very stuffy/runny nose. We've tried doing the saline drops and I have 3 different syringes, but even with 4 hands we can't seem to get much out and she gets more stuffy with all the crying as she HATES it. We are running a humidifier in her room too. I can't elevate her bed because she moves around so much that she would end up with her feet elevated at some point! Anyone have any tricks that have helped or is there a magic syringe out there that really suctions and works quickly?

What can I do next?

I sympathize with you. I never could get the bulb syringes that you buy in the store to do a thing. Then with my 2nd child, we got one at the hospital when she was born that worked GREAT. It's a huge, ugly green one. Very flexible with a longish nozzle. It really provides a lot of sucking pressure and gets out a lot of guck. I'm going to try to attach a link to a med supply website so you can see what it looks like--it's the green one, not the blue one. http://www.med-worldwide.com/product1234.html Other than ordering, I'm not sure where you could find one, but you might check with either a medical supply place, or even the hospital where you delivered her. You could even ask friends if they have a similar one you could borrow. We got another one when my fourth child was born (6 years ago) at Providence. Might not be in time to help you with this cold, but then you'll have one next time. Good luck!

Hello A.,

Happy mommying to you with your little girl. Having a cold is never fun. Have you tried "less is more" when it comes to the bulb syringe? Try laying your daughter on the floor in front of you...have all your bulb syringe stuff right next to you. Play a little game of you hanging over the top of your daughter, make silly faces, giggle, tickle, peek a boo, etc. When she is happy /laughing, without touching her use your syringe and quickly pull as much gunk out. Start laughing immediately and then try again.

I have a video of my daughter laughing at about 9 months of age everytime I bulb syringed her...she thought the feeling or the sound of it was funny I guess.

Good luck.

Positively,
M.

Those are the days and nights that involve the precious time with the kids sleeping in our laps for naps and night. We have tried everything imaginable and have found that the best place is in Mommy or daddy's lap. Take the special time while you can.

Huge hockey fans in this house also!

I'm with Veronica. My daughter is the same way -- she will scream if we come near her with drops or the syringe. She is usually able to get through the night after 2 nights of us holding her upright.

So sorry for your situation. Stuffy noses are very very difficult in little ones.
