Stroller Advice

I am a New York City dweller with no car, hence I use the transportation system. As such, the stroller I currently have is simply not adequate for city life. I was given the Fisher Price, Infant to toddler stroller. It’s actually really great, easy to maneuver and the like but it is not at all conducive to getting on the train or bus.

My question is what stroller is good for a New Yorker like me and one which doesn’t cost over 300.00? I would prefer one which is light weight, easy to fold, easy to fit inside my apartment, and basically easy to use on and off the subway. I’d appreciate any suggestions or names of strollers that you have used in the past or now. Thank you very much!

Hi C.,

I lived in Manhattan until my daughter was almost a year. I didn't travel too much on the subway or bus with her because of the whole stroller issue but when I did I had her in the baby bjorn. It was definately better than the stroller. Hope that helps.

I have a medium size stroller by Cosco (not Costco warehouse- lol).
It was a gift but I know it purchased at Walmart for around 30.00.

It folds in half nicely and can fit through standing turnstyles.

The best way I have found is to carry my son in a snuggli on my chest and leave the stroller at home altogether.
I use in the neighborhood but as far as NYC city trips I carry him on my chest and his stuff in a backpack, leaving both hands free.

Good luck from one NY mom to another.

Hi C.,

I know your pain. lol. When my son was younger i'd commute to his babysitter's house through rain, sleet and snow. We have a McClaren - easy to fold up, lightweight and easy to carry - should fit within your budget. you can find them at babies r us (there's on on 14th street) check out their website and you'll see different models in various prices. It comes with a custom rain guard the fits snuggly. Good luck!

I also live in NYC Brooklyn to be exact and the stroller that is the easiest to get around is the Maclaren strollers and there under or about 300.00 dollars. They're lightweight around fold easily. They fold into umbrella style strollers. I also switched from the travel system carriage to the Maclaren when my son was about 7 months old. Though the problems I have with the stollers is that there are no cup holders or enough basket space on the bottom of the stroller. Its great for the subway and bus. Hopefully it works for you. Good luck on finding the stroller best suited for you and your daughter.

McClaren's are good strollers. But they are a little on the expensive side. There are also Chico brands which I find are good, even combi's.

We're on our third kid and have tried many strollers. When we were living in the city, our Mclaren was by far our favorite. It's compact, light-weight, and easy to fold. I didn't take it on the subway too much, but it was great for city streets and getting in and out of shops. Good luck!

When my daughter was younger we had this stroller called “city something” we bought it at babies r us, but that was also 6 years ago. I just checked out the site and found one that is similar or maybe even the new model. We loved it at the time we lived in San Francisco and loved the fact that we could easily get onto public transportation. Plus it was so light weight you could manage it with one hand.

Here is the product info I found on the stroller at babies r us .com

Product Description

Lightweight stroller, quick tri fold and easy one hand fold. Compatible with Combi Connection infant seat, improved larger footrest, 5 pt. Harness, deep recline, removable and washable seat cushion, large storage basket. Check out our Stroller Buying Guide to select the stroller that's right for you.
