My son had a stomach virus that started last Thursday. That evening he began vomiting about every 20 minutes for about 5 hours. The next day he was better, but did not want to eat much. On Saturday he began having diarrhea and still has it 4 days later. Any idea's on how to stop the diarrhea?

What can I do next?

W., I'm sorry your son is sick! It's so hard to see our babies like that. The best advice I have for diarrhea is to feed him yogurt twice a day, or if he won't eat it, get some acidophilus milk, which has the same active cultures in it. These will replenish the "good" bacteria in his stomach, and help his tummy regulate itself. That, and the good old BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast - are easy for a tummy to digest when it's been sick.

I hope he's feeling better soon!

Hi W.-

Wow, your poor baby! My son (almost 11 months) has had a lot of stomach flu viruses but fortunately mostly the diarrhea part, not as much vomiting. When he was little, we did 1 day of Pedialyte only, then transition over to Similar DF (Diarrhea Formula) for like a day or 2, then transition to regular formula. Unfortunately, last time, he decided he hates the DF and threw that up, and was too hungry for the full Pedialyte course, so our nurse suggested a lot of bananas and oatmeal or rice cereal. That worked well, and kept him more satisfied than the other methods for being bigger now. Hope that helps, and hope he feels better soon!

sounds like it's the "bug" that has made it's rounds lately. here's what our pediatrician told us when all three of my girls had it.

just keep him hydrated and comfortable. stay away from milk and sugar drinks (soda, juice, gatorade) only water or if he prefers the flavor, pedialyte or the generic is juat a good. if he will eat give him white starches, crackers, rice potatoes these are easier to digest. also keep him covered with desitin or something similar, to prevent diaper rash. they also told me that it isn't uncommon for kids that age to have diarrhea for around 7 days or more.

but as always, call the doc if your worried

hope he feels better soon and take care of yourself too i got it after the girls and it was not fun

Hi W., Like someone already suggested go to the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Watch out for the amount of applesauce you give sometimes it helps the diareha. You can also use soy formula if you don't want to buy the DF kind. It works just the same.

I've always used blueberries for diarrhea. I've heard you can use bananas too. Just make sure he's hydrated!!! Good luck!

Hi there W.,

I'm so sorry your little one is still battling this sickness! We just got over it. Ugh! I would feed him bananas. That helped all of us with the diarrhea. ;)

Good luck to you!
