Hello,
My boy had a mild fever for the past couple of days and diarrhea (once per day for two days), now my 3 years old girl is waking up vomiting. I know no dairy products for a kid having diarrhea, but what are the food to avoid for a kid vomiting and what are the recommended food for a vomiting kid to sustain her energy level?

Thank you very much in advance!

What can I do next?

BRAT diet for diarrhea, but for vomiting I don't give them anything to eat until they can hold down liquids. Nothing with color in it (staining) - water, ginger ale, sprite/7UP are what I start with. Once they are keeping liquid down, then I move on to saltines, dry toast, crackers etc. After that it's broth/chicken noodle soup, maybe some Jell-O and then we're pretty-much back to normal.

BRAT diet and pedialyte. No juice. Only water or pedialyte mixed with water.

Keep it bland food..Most importantly if she is vomitting she needs to stay dehydrated. Gatorade and any other drink with Electrolytes..Don't give large doses at once or she will be vomitting again...Try frequent sips...if she is hungry try toast, crackers, and chicken noodle soup. Yogurt for the probitiotic it contains to help get the intestine healthy again. I am so sorry they're sick..Hope they get better soon. :)

my Dr always recomends the BRAT diet... Bananas, Rice, Apple(sauce), Toast.... also no milk and no suggery drinks.... pedialight is usually the dr's first recomendation. If the eating isnt getting done at this point that is just fine as long as they are staying hydrated. my favorite upset stomach meal was always chicken noodle soup, saltine crackers, and sprite...

Call your pediatrician now if you're not sure, rather than waiting for us!

No fruit juices - they can be acidic and hard on the stomach. I would also avoid anything high in fiber like fruit (though bananas can be OK) or vegetables. A child will be fine with a day or two of mostly liquids and some light, low-fiber starches (see BRAT diet). If the child is vomiting frequenly the doctor may say to get Pedialyte or the generic version of it and let your little one drink that. Plain Saltine crackers and plain (no butter) toast are usually fine but start in very small amounts. Dry Cheerios work for my child too. But dont' push solids if your girl doesn't really want them. A handful of Cheerios, or a half cup of cooked rice, a little applesauce, a frozen Pedialyte ice pop, really will be OK. Hydration matters more than solids.

Some folks may say, give ginger ale, but the carbonation makes my kid (and me) feel worse, and it's full of sugar, and is not needed if you are giving Pedialyte. You may not really need Pedialyte (pediatric electrolyte solution) if the child is not vomiting very frequently. But ask the professionals! Get a list from your doctor of the signs of dehydration, which include vomiting and/or diarrhea X times in Y hours (I can't remember the formula but there is one) as well as listlessness and inabiltity to produce urine.

When my daughter is sick with a stomach virus, we stick to the BRAT diet while she is sick and even a few days after - and also stay off the dairy.

B - Bananas
R - Rice
A - Apples, Applesauce
T - Toast

Best of luck to you and hope everyone is feeling better soon! :)

I haven't read the other responses but have you heard of the BRAT diet for when kiddos are sick (adults too for that matter)? Bananas, Rice, Apples/sauce and toast. I'm also a firm believer that what sounds good will probably stay down for the most part as long as it's not too greasy, salty, spicey. Stay away from water! I had no idea that when kids are sick and drink water it actually induces vomitting. Try to get him to drink a little somethign with sugar. Hope ahe feels better soon!

For vomiting... you want to limit everything except for pedia-lite or gatorade. Even then, very small amounts like 3 ounces every other hour until the vomiting stops. Slowly introduce bland foods like crackers - but again in small amounts every other hour. If she's vomiting for more than 2 days take her to the Dr if you haven't already called about it.
