Stomach Flu

My daughter had the stomach flu on friday afternoon. She only threw up, no diarreah. About an hour later I started having diarreah and stomach cramps, no throwing up. I am not sure if I had the stomach flu as well or if it was just my nerves(I have a fear of throwing up) What my fear is, is that I was up all that night with stomach cramps and diarreah. and that I am still going to get the stomach flu with the throwing up. It has alomst been 48 hours since my daughter got sick. I also have a 15 month old who has not gotten sick nor has my husband, but my neighbor who was here when my daugher got sick started throwing up an hour ago. I have such a fear of throwing up that I hope I didn't work myself up into getting sick and then I am going to really get sick. I just think it is strange that we both got it at the same time. it doesn't usually happen that way. I know that she got it from a kid at school so it is possible that I got it that same day from touching a serface or something. Isn't there a stomach flu that only affects kids?

What can I do next?

Kids especially really young ones can catch bugs that adults fequently escape so it is very possible that you will not get it if you haven't already had it. It is also possible for the same virus to have a different effect on you than it did on your child. I think it is just in some peoples nature to throw up when they get a stomachh virus (I am one of them) my Mother on the other hand could get the same virus I had and never throw up from it. It is very possible for you to both get it at the same time. I know several people that has happened to and it has happened in my own family as well.

I feel for you! We went through this in September, our first time as a family, everyone of us(5) got it. Even my mother in law who came a couple days for a few hours ended up with it. I'm like you and hate to throw up. I was the only one who didn't, but I was really close a few times but ended up with diarrhea. I would say if your not sure if you had it already, then you probably didn't get it yet. Keep your hands washed and lysol everything your kid touches. I kept my hands washed like crazy but I still got it. I think it probably is airborne too. Not what you wanted to hear I know. 1 thing that I tried this time that I hadn't tried for an upset stomach before is something called Emetrol. You buy it at the grocery store and it's this really sugary liquid. It took about 10 min each time to get it all down but I'm pretty sure it helped me, considering everybody else threw up and not me, but also probably cause I hate to throw up and was bound and determined not to. As for a stomach flu only affecting kids, I've never heard of that. Just keep yourself calm and tell yourself your not gonna throw up and that if it's coming out, it will come out the other end LOL!!!

These things hit people in different ways. I have noticed, many times when we all get sick, that it will hit one of use particularly hard, where they (or sometimes I) are feeling SO much worse...and then the same thing will only affect someone else mildly. Don't know why, guessing it has something to do with our immune systems. But we have gotten the flue like this before, and I believe there was one of us (4 in the family) who didn't throw up. Don't worry about it! Take it as it comes.

There is a relatively mild stomach bug going around right now. My 4 yr old vomited for 12 hours straight (beginning in the middle of the night) and needed a day to get his energy back. There was no diarrhea. Other children we know had the same thing, many complaining of low-grade temps (under 100 degrees) and headaches. Our pediatrician (during a well-child visit) said it was probably an enterovirus and the rest of the household was at risk. Well, it's been a week and we are all fine, including his 18 month old sister (I'm still nursing, so that may have protected her). My husband had diarrhea and headache 5 days after my son's illness, but was fine in less than a day, so if it was the same bug, I think it has a different effect on adults. Lots of yogurt and/or good probiotic supplements should help keep the GI bugs away.

I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. Last year my 4 year old was sick off and on with that bug for a month and my 2 year old for 3 months. The Kids had diarrhea for about 3 months straight and it was not fun, but I found something to get rid of it: Fresh Minced Garlic. I have been adding fresh garlic to every meal and they have skipped the flu season this year. There are bugs out there that only affect kids because their immune system is not as strong as an adult's. I would suggest adding garlic to all your food (except sweet stuff). It will help get rid of any viruses in the system and boost their immune system and yours. Coconut works too if you like that. Have fun and God Bless.

It could be something she ate which would be why it affects one of you and not the other, or it could be that the others in the family were exposed to the virus before and have built up immunity and therefore didn't get sick. I remember last time my daughter got sick it was only about an hour after she threw up that I got sick also, could be from her, could be I was exposed at the same time as her. As for the fear of throwing up, my husband was terrified of throwing up, to the point that he had to seek professional help. This last horrible virus, in which my daughter was up throwing up several times in the middle of the night and she said needed her daddy and then i was getting sick also, he couldn't escape it. He fretted over it for a while and I told him that he will feel so much better after he throws up. Finally he had no choice and did it, and his 15 yr fear is now over. He faced the fear and lived to tell about it. So I guess the only advise that I can give you is to accept that eventually with kids it will happen and you will survive and try not to make yourself sick.

What you have is going around. In our family, it also started with a daughter throwing up. Some of us threw up, some had diarea and stomach cramps. It is all the same bug but doesn't seem to last more than 24 hours. Still, I would wash down things in your house well and keep washing hands well to make sure it doesn't take a second tour through your house.

many times the 'stomach flu' is actually food poisoning. which will explain why only some people in a household get it.
