Starting 6 Month Old on Baby Food

I am gearing up to start my daughter on Gerber 1st Stage baby food. I am currently giving her a little bit of rice cereal in her bottle and she has done very well with that.
I am wondering how other moms have done this. I don't remember how much I gave my son when I started.

What can I do next?

My doctor told us to start my daughter on rice cereal at 4 months. She loved it. We moved on to baby oatmeal about a month after and now we mix Gerber 1st Stage baby food with her oatmeal two times a day. We started with sweet potatoes (she really enjoyed that), then moved on to squash and some fruit (pears and peaches). Give each new food about 3 days before introducing other kinds to watch for any allergic reactions.

Have fun!

I started introducing veggies first just a few spoonfuls at a time around the same time we were sitting down for dinner. Within a week he was eating the whole jar in one sitting! My doctor did recommend introducing the solids one at a time that way if he had an allergic reaction we would be able to pinpoint the source. I knew it was time to updrade to Stage 2 when we would look for more food after finishing the stage 1 jar.

I hope this helps, Good Luck!

i was a little cautious about starting my daughter on baby cereal at 4 months because i thought that was too young. . my daughter seemed to always want to more after the breastmilk and sometimes, the breastmilk was not enough. so, we decided to start on baby food little bit at a time. the more she ate baby food, the easier it was for baby to get used to food other than breastmilk. just try it a little bit at a time and you will know how much is too much or not enough. good luck

Always start a 6 month old beginning baby food with vegetables - if you introduce fruits first, she will be less inclined to try and like vegetables because the fruits are so much sweeter (and even a 6 month old will prefer sweet over anything else!). A food to try first, besides rice cereal, is sweet potatoes - gently warm a few tablespoons and offer it to the baby. Remember that she has yet to master swallowing solids, so most of the food you put in her mouth she will push out with her tongue (it takes a few weeks for them to control the instinctive tongue thrusting associated with drinking a bottle or nursing) but she will get the hang of it eventually. Sweet potatoes is also a good one to try because it is very rare a baby will be allergic to it - and remember, when starting a new food, always give it a week or so until you try another to make sure you babies' system is tolerating it appropriately. You may find that some foods make her constipated or gassy, so one new food at a time.
I started my daughter off with rice cereal mixed with breastmilk at 5 1/2 months old - the rice cereal actually ended up making her more constipated, so I ended up switching to single grain baby oatmeal, and that went well. Sweet potatoes was her first food after rice cereal, then carrots, green beans - after I knew she would definitely take the veggies, we started on pureed fruits, and then finally introduced pureed meats (i made all of the meat baby food myself - I dont like the consistancy of jarred baby food meats). As your daughter gets older, she will express her desire for more food as she gets the hang of swallowing, so take cues from your little one's eating habits in order to gauge how much she wants.

My pediatrician advised us against putting the cereal in the bottle. We started out with just a spoon of rice cereal mixed with formula to make it really runny. It was almost like soup, and my daughter lapped at it like a kitty.

As the days went by, we increased the amount of cereal -- 2 spoons, then 3, then four, etc -- and we still made it rather liquid-y but not super runny. After about 4 days of plain cereal one time a day, we added a bit of baby fruit to the cereal one time a day.

And then your pediatrician will advise you on how to go from there. Usually you'd offer some orange vegetable (squash or carrots) one time a day. You offer one new food every 4-5 days, to make sure the baby doesn't have an allergic reaction.

with my kids I played it by ear. They let me know when they were full. With my first if I started to feel that he was eating to much I would stop him. Then when He was crying a few hours later and seemed to be hungry I relized that I didn't give him enough to beagin with. At age 6 my son still eats every two hours Good luck

I started off by giving my 4 month old about a half a serving cereal and mixed in some of the veggies and fruits. It wasn't long before he was gulping down those stage 1 fruits and veggies and I moved onto the stage 2 pretty fast. He's now almost 8 months and has one late morning meal of cereal and a stage 2 veggie and then a late eve of cereal and fruit.

I started my 5 month old on rice cereal at 4 months and when she turned 5 months we gave her sweet potaotes. You should give your daughter a new food for a week to see if she will have an allergic reation. The 1st foods are sweet potaotes, peas, bananas, apples, pears and carrots. May daughter eats a jar at a time, at first it was just once a day, now we give her rice cereal in the morning a jar at lunch and a jar for dinner and she nurses in between meals.
