Hi I have a 5 month old darling son, he just doesn't want to eat solids yet. I have tried cereals every now and then, he opens his mouth for the spoon and keeps it in , then closes the mouth and spits it all out. First I thut he doesn't know the swallow concept, but been doing this for a while.
What to do should i wait more , may be at 6 months. Shud i try any other foods, like fruits or veggies.

What can I do next?

Most doctors will tell you to wait until 6 months to feed the baby solids anyway. If he's not interested, wait another month and then worry or talk to the pediatrician.

Are you mixing cereal with anything? Cereal by itself with water is like wall-paper paste. Even with breastmilk or formula, it's pretty bland. You could try mixing it with pureed pears or a sweet veggie, like carrots or sweet potatoes. My son loved it like that.

He's simply not ready yet. The WHO and AAP now recommend waiting until at least 6 months to introduce solids (if you're BF you might even want to wait longer).

Try again in a month or two and I'd recommend skipping the cereals (they're really just filler) and go straight to fruits and veggies, smooshed bananas and avocados are great first foods.

It's perfectly normal what your son is doing. I would stick with the rice cereal until he gets the hang of it. It takes a while for them to get used to it. Then you could try oatmeal... and I would recommend once he is past 6 months giving him a few spoonfuls of veggies mixed in with the rice cereal. It took my daughter a lot of attempts to get it down pat. Now we are moving on to more solid foods (ex. crackers/eggs). My son doesn't take as long as my daughter so I jumped for joy when she finally put the cracker in her mouth yesterday and made a chewing motion!

Yes, try fruits & veggies. I mixed the fruit with oatmeal & the veggie with rice cereal & my daughter eats better now!(She will be 7 mos)!

Hi S.!

Milk (breast milk or formula) is the most important food source for the first year of life according to the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics). Sometimes babies are not ready to eat solids even though they are of age to start eating them. Follow his cues because he will tell you when he is ready. My daughter who was and is breast feeding didn't take solids until she was 9 months old. My daughter never liked the cereal or baby jar food. And she her weight and health was just fine according to her pediatrician. When she started eating solids, I gave her fruit and soft table foods such as mashed potatoes and toasted bread. You can try other solids, but just giving him his milk is more than adequate for him. Best wishes and keep up the good work!

Yeah, I would just put it off. No need for solids yet. My first son started solids at 6.5 months and my second at 6 months. The breastfeeding experts recommend exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months before introducing solids for the typical baby. I'd just go with waiting if your baby doesn't seem ready. Solids aren't necessary yet. My mom was telling me that she exclusively nursed me until I was 10 months old because I didn't care to have solids and the doctors were fine with it back then. They told her to just wait until I was ready before beginning solids. Granted that was 28 years ago, but the pendulum swings. At that age, I then wasn't on baby food for long before going to table food. And I never had a lot of allergies or anything. So I'd just take the cue from your baby and wait.

We didn't start feeding out son solids until 6 months--he just didn't seem ready. I think its different for all children: my ssiters kids startd at 3 months! Take your time--let him take his time. I would stick with the bottle for the most part, but continue to feed him some rice cereal (actually, we had to switch to the single grain oatmeal because my son HATED the rice cereal--he wouldn't swollow it!). Our doctor recommended to start with a 4oz. bottle and then the oatmeal. He also recommended that we start introducing veggies shortly thereafter (so he would have a 4oz bottle, then a bit of oatmeal and then a thing of veggeies). They said start with the orang veggies as these are usually accepted without an issue (sweet potatoes, carrots etc.).
I would also call your pedicatrician--they are a great resource for the daily stuff like this...

I started my daughter on solids at 5 months and got the same reaction. When she hit 6 months she got it and she hasn't stopped eating since.

I went through the exact same thing, my daughter was 9 months old when she finally decided that she is ready for solids. She almost skipped the baby food stage and now eating adult food with us with her two teeth. Many people told me that she will eat when she is ready nothing to worry about as long as she drinks her milk until 1 year, and they were right. Good luck and keep offering, one day it will happen.

5 months is actually a little soon to start foods. 6 months is generally what is recommended. Give him some more time and try again.

Most pediatricians reccomend that you wait until 6 months before introducing solids now for many reasons. I would say don't push it and try again later.

He's not ready. I would wait another month at least and then try again. Try the next time with avocado or pears. Both are much better for him than cereal and easier for him to digest. You have a very smart baby. :) Mine wasn't ready for solids until he was 7+ months old, and I just kept offering starting at six months until he cooperated. I would wait. :)

Is your baby breastfed? If so...here is a quote from an article on the La Leche League website
"Listen to your baby! Babies with a tendency to allergies may refuse solids until later in their first year. As long as they are growing well and are happy and healthy, there is no need for concern."
You can check the whole article if you go to

Best of luck!

What he is doing is normal. He needs practice, so unlike what the others have said, I say keep trying--not forcing, but gentle trying until he gets the hang of it. Five months old is the perfect time to start practicing solid food.
