Hi A., look dont'n woory every child is diferent! mi 4 year old star to walk when he was 14 months old!!! cause he was very overweith... mi 9 months ols girl just star to do some steps i don think you should be worry, for real!!!!
Two days ago, my 1 year old (who is not walking yet) learned to stand up by himself. What I mean by this is he sits in the middle of the floor and stands up from a sitting position without holding on to anything. It seems to me that this requires a lot more balance than walking, and even my sister said that all three of her boys walked first. So my question is, did your child learn to walk first or stand up from a sitting position first? Is this any indicator of when he will walk?
Thanks for the help!
Thanks everyone! He actually took his first three steps today (June 23rd)! I am so proud of him. I hope he will do it for his dad tonight! So it took him 1 week to go from standing to walking ;-)

Yep, at about 7-8 mo's (i think) my grandaughter would be sitting on the floor then put one knee up & stand up using that one leg to push & up she'd go. I also thought she was a genius (LOL) I wish I could do that!
It was only 2 months ago, so you'd think I would remember clearly- but already the order of things are fading in my mind. I believe my daughter also learned to stand on her own because I could set her down in a store and she would just stand there from about the time she was 10 months to 12 months old. At some point she was able to walk if you gave her some momentum, but couldn't stop on her own (she had to fall or walk to something and grab on). By the end of the 12th month she was able to walk and stand fine.

I'm no expert, but I'll tell you about my son. He did the same thing! He is very strong and walked at 9 months after standing on his own without help for quite a while. It is really funny isn't it!
-K.
All of my kids did that before they learned to walk. I thought it was normal until I read your question!
Hi A. M.,
Every baby that I have ever known or been around has stood up first. It helps them to get bablance. I believe your baby is perfectly normal in doing this. I have been around quite a few babies in my time on earth.
Our little boy (15 mos) stood up just like that very soon before he started walking. He was 10 1/2 mos old at the time. Now he is running everywhere !
I can't remember which came first with my older children (old age) but my youngest started walking at 6 1/2 months. Perhaps it was the fact that she wanted to keep up with the others but she never crawled. She pulled herself up one day and took several steps. From that point she was zooming all over the place on foot! The doctor was only a little concerned because her bones hadn't fully formed but it has never been a problem.
I think you're right that it seems to require more balance to pull up from a sitting position. Whatever the case, get ready because he is ready for walking!
A.,
Get ready. My first baby didnt start walking until he was a year and one week old. I am not sure if your baby will follow mine, but my 8.5 month old is already standing with out help, but not walking. I am sure that in the next month or so he will be walking, because he wants to catch his big brother.
Both ways are perfectly normal. I'm a pediatric physical therapist and I've seen typical kids learn both ways. Some kids stand first, some walk first; whichever they do first, the next is usually soon to follow. They both require balance and control, just some kids develop the static (standing) control first, and some develop the dynamic (walking) control first. Enjoy the time now while it lasts, it won't be long and he'll be running across the house.
A.,
Don't worry about it at all. I have twin 1-year old girls. One of them stood up w/o holding on to anything before she walked (just like your son) and the other one (now 14 months) isn't even standing up yet... and certainly not walking. She can push something across the room if she's holding on, but she's nowhere near walking yet. I'm not the least bit concerned. She's done everything in her own time, and walking is no exception. If your son is standing up on his own, he'll be walking in no time. What he's doing is perfectly normal.
Congratulations on your new baby. You're gonna be one busy mom!
Blessings.
My son did the same thing....get ready, he will be running soon!!!!!
My son and both boys I watch have been able to stand before walking like that. My son did most things right "on schedule" but then didn't actually walk until 18mths..he just didn't have any interest in it but has been non-stop ever since. He'll be 3 in Sept.
Hi A.,
My 8 year old talked her head off and didn't walk until the day before her 1st birthday, but she walked around everything. My 5 year old walked at 10 months and RAN at 11 months, but hardly talked at all. I saw my then 9 month old nephew did this very thing AND clap and dance in place. I told my brother, "that boy is going to walk SOON" he did the next week! Most kids who have this kind of balance walk very soon afterwards. Here you go!!!! He will be BUSY exploring!
S. :-)
I agree with the others that it is pretty normal. I am sure all of my kids did the same. My first walked at 9 months, my second started a week before his first birthday. My baby is almost nine months old, just started crawling and pulling up on things within the last 2 weeks, and she is already standing up in the middle of the floor.
Hi A., Our granddaughter did this same thing and has been for a while and she started walking yesterday June 19 and she will be 15 months old on June 30. She would crawl and get a ball and hold it and stand up without holding anything and has been doing this for a month or so and she just took off yesterday. Before this she would pull herself up and stand up, but for a while she just would stand up from a sitting for over a month. Ed
Both my daughters and all 3 of my friends kids stood before they walked. From my experience it is pretty common. In all of these instances, they walked within a short time of learning to stand. They pretty much had the balance down by this point so once they took their first steps, they were off!
Hi! My daughter started walking exactly at 13 months... (that was in January) she did that FIRST actually and then the standing from sitting on the floor after I think- so that is really good that he is doing that! Every baby is different! I am due with #2 at the end of September as well!
Good luck to you!
Joanna
My first 2 walked first and it took a LONG time (a month or 2) before they were able to stand up without holding on to something. My 3rd is 13 months and just started pulling up to her feet... They all have their own timeline and it sounds like your little guy just wants to be different! Obviously you have nothing to worry about :-)
My neice did what your son is doing--it was amazing! She'd just be sitting there and all of a sudden she'd just pop up with no hands! She would just stand there for a while and the plop back down. Pretty soon after that she started taking steps. My son, on the other hand could walk very well holding onto something for what seemed like forever. Then, one day, after he was absolutely sure of himself, he started walking. He was 13 months. Have fun and enjoy waht little bit of non-walking time he has left! :)
My son began to stand up on his own about 2 weeks before he turned 1, but didn't start walking until 1 week after his first birthday. At his 1 year check up the doctor said he is doing the hardest part, so it shouldn't be long before he takes steps. So it is coming!! My second son walked first, so, every child is different.
My DD did the same thing at right about a year. Within a couple of weeks, she was taking 1-2 steps at a time; within a month, I'd say she was definitely walking, and now (at 14 months) watch out! Last night she walked out the front door, across the porch, down to the sidewalk, and over to our neighbor's house (with me following, of course!) So your turn comes soon!
A.,
My son, who is now 13, ran before he walked! Every child develops in his own time and way.
Our son had one of those activity centers that had a handle on it and 4 wheels. He'd been standing and holding on to the coffee table since 10 months, but at 12 1/2 months one day he stood up-held on to the handle and ran pushing the activity center all the way across the living room to daddy. His eyes were big as saucers w/astonishment at his feat...and a smile that his dad and I still cherish to this day.
Hope this is helpful...every child is unique and special-- just wait till #2 comes along. But, do not compare his growth, weight or milestones to the new baby because assuredly they'll be different even if only a little bit.

My little guy is doing that! He just turned one on May 31st and he goes from sitting to standing without holding on to anything! We thought he was a genius. :)
I wish he would just walk already! He stands there for so long, bend his knees to get something and then stands back up but REFUSES to take a step! I try to hold his hand and walk with him, but he pulls his feet up and will not take a step and gets angry!
So cute...soon our little guys will be running away at lightening speed!! :) Just wanted to let you know I am right there with you. :)
Good luck with your new one coming! how exciting, :)
All 3 of my boys crawled before they could sit unassisted then cruised the furniture then stood first and then stepped...
they were all 3 walking by 9 months...
I think they all do it differently. Also, most girls talk earlier than boys and most boys walk earlier than girls. All 3 of my boys had speech delays but now they jabber all the time! :0)
Mine did the exact same thing. We have a large unfurnished room at the front of the house and she would crawl around, then decide to stand up. She wouldn't last long, but it was impressive to see. Completely normal. They all do things differently. She walked at 13 months. And really started being able to stand on her own without support at about the same time (where many say that comes first and then walking). Don't you worry.
