When Did Your Child Start Walking?

My daughter is 7 months old. She has been able to stand with help (someone holding her hands) for a while. For the past month or so she has been able to grab hold of something and pull herself up to stand, which she gets very excited about! We thought she was going to skip crawling and go straight to walking, but she finally started crawling about a week ago. She has also been able to "walk" while we hold her hands; she knows how to move her feet to walk. If she can do all of this now, about how long do you think we should expect to see her standing on her own (without holding something) and walking? Is she early with this development?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, she's 11 months now and has finally taken a few quick steps on her own! I guess she's just not confident enough yet to keep going. Everybody keeps saying she will be walking soon. Maybe so :)

Hey S.,

My oldest started walking at 9 months also. My youngest looked like she was going to follow right behind her but then luckily for me she stuck with speed crawling for a few months longer until 13 months. Now they run, I think they've forgotten that walking exists!

My daughter is 9 1/2 mo old. she started crawling late at 7 1/2-8 months and started walking right behind that at 9 months. She was getting really good with walking holding onto things and all of a sudden she just let go!

S.,

My daughter was a lot like yours and has been walking since about her 10-month birthday. Everything I have read -- it is early - but every child is different! She is in to everything, but it is very fun to see her 'tottering and teetering' around because she is certainly not a steady walker yet, but she can get from here to there on her feet if she wants to! She started going from one piece of furniture to the next, then risking a little further and further -- it was very fun to watch her gain confidence and balance! Enjoy!

My 9 year old walked when she was 8 months. My 5 year old was 11 months. My 13 month old ain't walking yet, but she can hold on to the couch and cruise around. I think she's scared she might fall but she doesn't wanna walk really.

I had a smile a mile wide when I read your posting. My daughter walked the very day she turned 8 months old. I scrambled to baby-proof the house. We always joke that it must be that I didn't vaccuum enought, because the baby never crawled!! (Also, people will tell you that boys take longer to walk-- and my son did, he was 9 months ol when he started walking)

Hi S.,
My 11 month old son has just mastered walking on his own. Still a little wobbly, but the only time he crawls is when he's in a big hurry. Just before his 7 month bday he started to crawl and could walk with help by his 8 month bday. He didn't start to pull up until he could crawl. He took his 1st steps alone right at his 10 month bday. From 9 to 10 months he could get to standing position with no help from furnature and could stand alone for long periods of time, but no matter how hard we tried, he wouldn't even attempt to walk to us. About a week ago, he got up and started walking in the living room while I was in the bathroom, fell on the entertainment center and busted his lip wide open. Don't be in a rush for her to walk because you will soon have NO downtime!! This is definatly a fun time though. Babyproof Babyproof Babyproof!!! =) =) =) GOODLUCK!!

My daughter is 19 months and I can remember when she started to crawl and walk like it was yesterday. She started to crawl about 6 or 6 1/2 months. Right away she was pulling up on everything. She would walk around the coffee table and knew the whole process but didn't have enough strength to do it on her own until about 8 or 9 months. I have no idea if it is early or not. I do know that a few people that I have talked to their child started a lot later. Almost after they were one. Be ready to see bruises all over her head. She fell down so many times it wasn't funny. I didn't baby her though so she would fall down and just get right back up without it phasing her at all. The first step will not turn into a walk over night though so good luck.

How exciting! My son was a late crawler at nine months but was walking by his first birthday and at almost 13 months he's pretty proficient! Each baby is different...it sounds like your girl is right on track! I'd guess she'll walk by her first birthday (it partially depends on how much she likes crawling) but one thing is for sure...baby proof now if you haven't already! and get ready for one very busy little girl!!!

My daughter sat up, started crawling, and stood up holding onto something all within two weeks starting at 6 months. She really enjoyed the crawling, and started exploring with holding onto furniture and walking around. She was about 11 months when she actually took her first steps and it didn't take long before she was steady and everywhere. So I wouldn't necessarily say she is starting early, but it may take a while for her to start walking. Their muscles in their legs need to develop and that is part of the reason crawling is so important it helps strengthen their legs and hip muscles. you will probably notice in the next month she will start cruising with help from whatever is around her, and before you know she will be walking and you will be tickled and very busy making sure she stays out of trouble

My son started pulling up a few days ago. I think kids will walk when they're ready. Seems like your doing everything you can to help her practice. I'd keep doing what you're doing but let her take her time. Remember, when she does get the hang of it, it'll be a whole new world of chasing her inquisitive little booty around. LOL If she's already pulling up, its just a matter of time.

Hi there. My daughter took her 1st steps alone at nine months. She did what yours is doing and one day, out of the blue, she walked to my mom. She too was early at pulling up, standing on her own, and NOT crawling. I really don;t remember her crawling all that much at all!! While I am NO expert, I did work in a Peds office for 4 years, and what we told parents was, " Don;t worry. each child will do their thing on their time. IF she had not started walking on her own by 15mos, talk to your Dr."

GOOD LUCK!! and give thanks everyday you havent had to chase her down. TEE HEE HEE!!! Just kidding.

She sounds to me to be right on schedual. My daught started walking at about 9 months old. From everything I've read and seen in my own kids, I'd say she is right were she should be. They usually start walking, on their own, any where from 9 months to a year.

My daughter did the exact same thing that you are describing. I was convinced she would never crawl and just let go of the chair and start running! However, she was 11 months before she got brave enough to take a few steps, and then she didn't really take off until her first birthday. Apparently cake was a great walking motivator!

My little girl didn't start walking until she was almost a year old, even though she was able to pull up and take steps holding onto someone's hands. It had me worried for a while but when I asked her doctor he told me to be patient. She had been checked physically and was perfectly healthy and when we relaxed about wanting her to walk she finally started walking. If your little one is pulling up and walking with help already give her time, she'll start walking when you least expect it, but for the most part it's just a waiting game.

My child just turned 16 months old and is not yet walking on his own. He does walk with us holding his hands and walk around objects while holding on. I have always heard/read that 18 months is the "magic number". My son is larger so doctors told me it would probably be later. Babies develop at their own pace, so I wouldn't worry. She'll do everything when she's ready.

My oldest was walking by 9mths. He didn't start crawling with his belly off the floor until he was almost 7mths. Actually, he could walk, and I mean actually walk carrying his own weight, while holding someone's finger in each hand by the time he was 5mths old. He wasn't pulling himself up until he was right at 7mths (almost to the day), though.

My youngest was almost on the exact same timeline as my oldest, but he didn't start walking until 11mths. He was even doing the walking motion at 3mths while holding your hands. His pediatrician was amazed when he saw that and thought he'd be walking by 7mths (I know 2 babies that have started at 7mths), but the little stinker never wanted to even try.

So, you just never really know.

I think she is within the normal range. I have three boys and my first didn't crawl until 8-9 months and walked just after 12 months (but we had all hard word floors then so he had no leverage). My second pretty much skipped crawling and was walking well by 10 months. My third is now 8 months and is pulling up on everything and sliding himself along furniture. My guess is your girl will be walking by 10 months. That is about the earliest I have ever heard of but I have worked in child care for the past 7 years. Actually getting the balance to stand and walk alone will probably take her at least a couple more months. Just some advice though, my second fell A LOT - I think because he was an early walker and didn't have great balance. He ALWAYS had bumps and bruises on his head so you might need to be extra careful if she is walking early!

She sounds right on track...DON'T rush the walking thing though because once they start they are hard to keep up with..I swear my son went straight from crawling to running..he is almost two and all I want him to do now is sit for a few minutes so he can eat or get his diaper changed (LOL)...enjoy the crawling stage while it last..you will miss those days when they are gone. And all babies develop at their own pace but my son did walk after his first birthday (about 13 months) without falling

Wow it seems like you are describing my 11 mth old to the tee.
She started pulling up and everything at the sametime as yours.
She actually started letting go of things and taking steps at about 9 1/2 mths. And at 10 mths she was progressing really well, taking more of those wobbly steps. Now at 11 mths she is on the go. Chases her older brothers and stays right on there heels. Good luck with your little angel and start moving things out of her way because she is taking off.

My daughter was 14 months before she started walking. When she turned 1 i kept wondering when she was going to walk and thought maybe there was something wrong with her. The day she started walking i was laying on the couch and she came walking past me. Needless to say I was shocked. Usually when toddlers start to walk they go through a period of falling down as well, but my daughter was walking like she was a pro. I think she knew how to walk she just wanted to make sure she was ready.

Hi S.,

My son started walking at 9 months. He has done everything a little early except for talking. He grunted for everything for a long time, almost three, we though there was something wrong with his ears b/c everyone else that I knew their kids were atleast saying something. Then one day when he was trying to get our attention he just came into the room and said "Can I have some juice please?" So the little stinker was just holding out.
