I have picked up a lot of clothes from garage sales, but noticed quite a few stains. Does anyone have a home recipe to remove stains from clothing that has been washed and dried? I have used bleach, shout, and Oxo-Brite and the stains remain.

What can I do next?

Many of the stains are probably "oil based." Strangely enough the best thing for this is to take Dawn dishwashing soap, and keep it as concentrated as possible by not adding water. Liberally soak the stained areas in the Dawn and let it sit overnight...or until you do laundry (though hang it so it doesn't get moldy). Put it into the washer and wash with other clothes like regular, and the dishwashing liquid will break down the oil, and wash it all free (and this does work even after the clothes have been dried). You would be suprised at how easy and simple it is, and it works.

I have a Biz bucket that I soak clothes in (old ice cream bucket). Fill it with hot water and add a scoop of Biz. Soak the clothes overnight and then wash. I check before putting them in the dryer because with old, set-in stains it could take a couple of treatments. I'm going to try some of the other suggestions too because some stains are very hard to get out!

I totally agree with the Dawn dish soap suggestion! Works like a charm! I have also used Fels Naptha and that works well too.
After treating the stains with either of these thing you could soak the items in the washing machine (warm water) and Borax for a few hours or overnight. Good luck! There is nothing worse than getting home from a sale and realizing that there are stains!

I swear by this... "Fels-Naptha" I tell EVERYONE about it. It's a bar (looks like soap) and works better than anything I've used. My SIL says she likes it better than oxi-clean. It's all you will need... It's cheaper too! Any questions, drop me a msg.

Good luck,

I wash things and leave them in the sun to dry, sometimes it takes several times. If it's a light colored item, the sun might help fade the stains. Try soaking in Biz (diluted with water), or adding Biz to your regular detergent.

I soak the clothes in Oxy-clean in hot water overnight. Then in the morning I scrub them with Fels Naptha soap with an old toothbrush...then I soak more if needed. Then I put it in the wash with the oxy-clean in the wash too. That usually does it for me. If not, I just bleach the entire outfit.

I buy Malaluca Pre Spot and it works wonderful!! I spray the clothes and let them set for about 1-2 hours, than wash and pull them out and let them line dry tosee if it came out and if it didnt I try it one more time and it usually comes out than. I also use Baby Oxi Clean, and if it is a really hard stain to remove I spray w/ the PreSpot let stand for about 5 mins and than soak it for 24 hours in a tub of Baby Oxi Clean and hot water.
