Stabbing in Atlantic City

Hi Moms,

We are planing a vacation to Atlantic City next month. I just heard that 2 tourists were stabbed and killed in a supposedly "safe" area. It was a mentally ill homeless woman from Philly. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that a lot of homeless people go from Philly to AC people because there is a large shelter there. I am concerned and feeling uncomfortable. Do you think this is reasonable or am I just overeacting to a very shocking and sensational story? My husband says the car ride is more dangerous statistically. What do you think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My husband grew up going to AC and we went last year with our son who was 3 at the time. We only go for 3 days and neither my husband or son are "beach people" so it was a good compromise. We stayed on the boardwalk but did go to the beach at night. We never felt unsafe but now it is definetly on my mind.

I grew up in philly and live outside of it now and have visted AC a bunch. It's always been like that. Google any major city and you'll see things like this happening. I'd still go though BUT park in the casino or hotel lots not around town and don't walk the city at night, J. the boardwalk strip. The strip is fine. If you're going you should sneak and visit brigantine beach its a few miles from AC and super nice and clean unlike wildwood, ocean city...

I think it doesn't matter where you are or what you are doing. Crime is everywhere.

I'm sure this woman was taken off the streets. Being homeless, in itself, does not make someone a threat to you. My point is - go have fun. Use common sense precautions. Stay in well lit, touristy areas.

There is violence all over the place if you are going to not go somewhere just because something like that has happened you might as well lock yourself up in your house. That would be like me saying oh I am not going to go to downtown Dallas cause JFK was shot there. Your husband is correct though you are more in danger in a car.

Good luck and God Bless!

I agree with Mallory. Anyone who has been to AC a time or tow knows that you DON'T venture a block off of the "strip" area. Very high crime.

Statistically, you'd do well to be careful, stay in the VERY public areas and don't venture into unknown territory. And, of course, use common sense, lock your hotel room, car, valuables, etc.

Random violence is everywhere, probably even in your town.

Your husband is correct. It was an unfortunate thing that happened but generally speaking Atlantic City, Las Vegas, or any other place where they have gambling can be dangerous but any place can be dangerous. Don't let fear hold you captive to the possibility that you may just have the most wonderful time and create new wonderful memories.

Many people still vacation in places like New York, Los Angeles, Mexico and the list could go on forever and they all have a wonderful time and wonderful memories.

I'm sure it's an isolated incident.
Go and enjoy.
I'm around mentally ill homeless people everyday, so far I'm still alive after 7 years. Not to say that one day one of them might whack me, but I don't choose to dwell on that ;)

I worked in Sisters Oregon, and my boss there travelled to AC to do his buying for his store. He told me a story about a time when he and his wife were there, had a hotel reserved, and when their flight got in, they took a cab to their hotel. Well, low and behold, they were going in the wrong direction. It was in the middle of the night, people were expecting them in, because they were meeting others there, and the cabby took them down this street that had no cars, and he stopped at a green light. My boss got a really scary gut feeling and he told the cabby that he better turn it around and take them to their hotel, that there are people waiting for them and expecting them!!! I guess my boss talked in a threatening enough way that the cabby turned around and they arrived at their hotel. My boss was thinking the cabby thought they were new to town and that they wouldn't have a clue that they were going in the wrong direction. The cabby was certainly mistaken. Scary scary! Me personally, since I'm an outsider, i would 'never' go to AC. I'm too chicken. LOL I don't think you're overreacting at all. If you are having a gut feeling of concern and discomfort, I strongly suggest you listen to your gut. It just may very well save your life. If you decide to go, i pray for your safe travel there and back home. Be very cautious and pay attention to your surroundings at all times to be on the safe side. Windows rolled up, doors locked at all times. Best wishes to you. :-)

Take reasonable care. Do not flash large wads or allow your daughter to go around in her swimsuit to restaurants as I see so many do in beach areas.

I live in a small suburb of a non-tourist city. Random acts of violence happen here. Never know when or how. If they knew it was a homeless, mentally ill woman from Philly,my guess she is off the street. Not all homeless people are ax murders. If you were listen to every story, and feel your going to be killed every moment of the day, you would never leave your home, and even there a toaster could fall into your bathtub water, in some bizarre accident. Ever watch Final Destination?
