I am looking to switch my 6 month old son to soy formula as many have told me it helps with spitting up issues and gas pains. All I want to know from other Mom's who have used it is the pros and cons of soy formula. If any of you can offer any advice, input, experience, that would be great. It seems to me it would be a healthy alternative to regular formula, but not sure. I am currently on the most expensive formula out there (Nutrimigen) because of my babies intolerance of all other formulas and thought that this would be a great alternative.

Thanks so much.

Hi M.,

My son whom is 13.5 weeks old is currently on Enfamil Soy. We started supplementing him with the regular enfamil while we were in the hospital because he was jaundiced. After a visit with the pediatrican only a few days old she told us to try and use the Enfamil gentle ease. So we switched, he seemed to have more gas and pain from that then the regular enfamil. After reading forum after forum about soy vs cow. I decided to put him on the soy formula. It did help him quite a bit. He was less gassy, upper and lower. He has been diagnosed with reflux. I did notice when I switched him to the soy, his stool became dryer and firmer. So I started to give him an oz of plain water through out the day, this has helped substantially. With the spitting up issue, it didn't seem to make a difference. I was told to add rice cereal to his bottles to help weigh down the formula. Another downside is his burps are pretty rancid, but easily avoided if you turn your head. =)Good Luck, and I hope it works for you. I really do prefer the soy, other then the drier stools; I have no complaints.

My son had HORRIBLE gas/pains from breast milk and milk-based formulas when he was an infant. I put him on soy and it was a miracle! He eventually outgrew the reaction to milk by his 1st birthday, and now at 19 months he's totally fine with dairy, completely normal, very healthy, and in the 100th percentile in weight and height. Costco carries a name-brand soy formula, but we also used store-brand, which was fine too.

Hi M.,

Both my girls- one is 4 years old and the other is 15 mos. old have used Soy formulas. THey were both lactose intolerant and had a real hard time with milk based formulas. I used Soy formula and it was fine. It pretty much stopped the throwing up and the horrible gas. I hope this helps you out. Good luck.

A child is more likely to develop an allergy to dairy if cow's milk is introduced too early so soy is a better choice overall. I use soy formula to supplement my breast milk because my son literally eats ALL THE TIME. I can't keep up with him. I use Earth's Best Organic soy formula to avoid pesticides and additives.
Soy formula has helped in dealing with both reflux and colic.

i've heard that babies who needed to be on nutramigen didn't do well with soy either. but every baby's needs are different.

it has also been noted that the fat content in soy is less than in cows milk. fat is essential for brain development. so unless there is a need for soy, you might want to stick with cows milk based formula

I would recommend rice milk over soy products for children. babies and children do NOT have the enzyme to break down soy. so it does not digest properly. There are also alot of hormones in soy that babies should not have. Here are a couple of websites you can read about soy for babies. I would read these and then decide if you want to do soy. You can also research more about it.

I hope that helps you, Good luck!

My son was really gassy and i used gripe water! It works wonders. I also have used it on my daughter (6 months)
