But it's so cool to get so many different kinds of women's opinions.

I asked whether it was ok to wear a black dress to a wedding. Thing is, I was WRONG, it's a NIGHT wedding (good thing I looked!).

Anyway, I got SO many different answers. I also got different answers from gfs and sisters I asked.

So I bought a black dress. Not a cocktail dress, and not all black, has white detail around the neck, wrists, pockets, from Chicos. I'd post a link, but they often get pulled.

The next question is, with a knee length a-line conservative but pretty dress with a medium heeled pump, do I HAVE to wear hose? And, if so, what color? I cannot remember the last time I put hose on, bleck. I have nice calves and ankles, really I do, they won't make you sick anyway. So will the fashion police totally book me and take me downtown with no HOSE?!

Thanks Ladies!

:)

Well. my grandmother doesn't even wear hose anymore. I don't think you have to wear hose.

I think you will get different answers on the slip thing, though. I am 29. Not a single person I know wears a slip. It does seem my friends who are in their 40's and beyond still wear slips, at times. I don't think it's a requirement, if that helps.

You dont have to wear hose if you can pull off the dress without it. People still wear slips if you need to sometimes they help make the dress fit better and not cling, I only wear them if the dress is a little see through or clingy

Send me a picture of your legs Theresa, I'll be the judge! Just kidding!! Definitely fine, no hose. I hate hose!!! I do not have the best legs - big calves. But I don't wear hose, if you don't like my legs, don't look. My husband likes them, so I'm fine :-)
I second Luna, shaving is key!
Also a black dress is fine for a wedding. It's 2011 not 1950. Plenty of bridesmaids wear black these days for a contemporary look. Black is a classic color. No worries! Have fun :-)

I do not understand why people say things like, hose is out, no hose! That's ridiculous! Yes, they still sell it. The departments stores, discount stores, etc. I would be shocked if people who wore suits to work didn't wear hose, especially lawyers, executives, etc.

Whether you wear hose or not has more to do with whether or not it compliments your outfit. For me, it depends on how formal or professional I need to be and the type of skirt or dress I'm wearing. If I wear hose, it's because I really think it's more flattering.

I wear a slip under certain skirts/dresses because the material clings or because it's thin. You'll have to be the judge of that. Does your dress need a slip? I don't think anyone wears a slip just because they think they "have to" or that's the "in" thing to do. It would be because the skirt/dress doesn't look as good without it.

Personally I would wear sheer black hose with a black dress and black shoes, especially since the wedding is at night. It seems more "formal" that way and for me personally, I would feel more put together if I had hose on. Just my opinion. Have fun!!! =)

The trend is not to wear hose. But supposedly sales of hose rose when Kate visited wearing hose. I always go for comfort though, if there's any chance it will be cool I wear hose. Not that it really keeps you that warm, unless it's hot out ;-).

No hose. Do they even sell those anymore? Your oufit sounds gorgeous. Maybe do fun jewelry. I like to wear red with black and white. A big red ring and a red necklace or something.

I wear hose to keep my legs warm. I get so cold very easily. I took a quick look at the dress. It's a nice dress but a little too conservative for my tastes. It would look nice with some flesh colored hose or even a very sheer black depending on how much of a contrast that black will be to your own skin tone.

As for the whole slp thing, if a skirt or dress is sheer enough to see my legs through them I go with wearing a slip. I work in a large city and there are too many perverts out there to count and I get tired of feeling the need to respond to some off handed remark one of them may make to me so I play it safe and put on a slip for those extremely sheer skirts and dresses.

I don't think you have to wear hose. The only time I ever wear hose is in the dead of winter- and even then it's a rare occasion.

I would wear the panty hose, but I feel too casual to not ware them. As for the slip, is the material thin? Try it on with a light behind you, if you can see your legs then wear the slip. I am thankful that I rarely have to get dressed up anymore.

I don't know much about fashion but I'll respond anyway..

I haven't seen people wear hose in years, except for the patterned, nice kind. Why not wear some of those black, patterned kind? Depending on the time of year, it might be weird to have bare legs. If it's a summer wedding, then no hose seems fine. But in the fall or winter, it seems like you should wear something, esp. where you live.

I think it's completely a matter of personal preference.
What about footie-peds instead?

SLIP: Is the dress sheer? If so, black slip.
If you're going to wear hose, I would also go for a slip (sheer dress or not) due to the static factor.

To check if your dress is "sheer" stand with light behind you & a mirror in front....can you see your legs?

No way! I am soooooo over hose!

I do wonder, however, no that I live where it gets SUPER cold, if one is supposed to wear hose in the winter? I think I would to be warmer (if I even went out at all!!)

You will look gorgeous at the wedding! Have fun!

About the slip: I think a slip only serves two purposes--extra coverage if the dress/skirt is somewhat see-through and to keep the skirt from catching on the hose.

Black dress with no hose = no slip!

No hose. I honestly don't know anyone (aside from my mother of course) who has worn hose in quite some time.

I actually attended a wedding this past Saturday afternoon & wore dressy black fitted pants with a cranberry colored sequined top & silver sandals. Aside from the bride, I without a doubt looked better than any of the women there who ALL chose to wear large flower-print dresses. I guess it was because it was a daytime wedding, but you couldn't pay me to wear any of those dresses for any reason. It's really all what you're comfortable with that matters IMHO.

my 20something nieces...all base their decision on the weather! No hose until snow is how one of them stated, not too long ago!

& when they wear hose...they go all out....depending on the outfit. I've seen them in sheer & silky, patterned/textured, & heavy-weight.

I think pretty much anything & everything goes....! Your dress sounds adorable! Enjoy.....

They have those really cute designed up pantyhose at Kohls and other dept stores. You'll need a slip if you where the hose so your dress doesnt get all clingy.

I don't think hosiery is necessary for a daytime wedding. If I did, I would wear nude because I think black would look to formal or too somber.

I would rather kick a dog than wear a slip. If I have to buy a slip to wear a dress, I won't buy the dress to begin with. I wouldn't think you would have to with a black dress. Just wear black under things.

I would say no, just make sure you pay extra attention to your heels and other feet parts. There is nothing worse that noticing someone's outfit then the shoes and they have cracks all around their heels and the skin is white and dry....

Yes, slips still exist, and still should be worn if you could otherwise see the shape of each leg under your dress. Lots of women don't wear them, but really, we all should.
