Hi M. - I am a nuclear medicine technologist, so I know all about bone scans. In response to your son being nervous about the injection - yes, it is radioactive and it sounds really scary, but it really has no side effects so it will not make him feel any differently at all. His body will flush it out through the urine. He will not notice it coming or leaving at all. Because your son is older, they should be able to do a straight-stick injection - kinda like the opposite of a blood draw. They probably won't need to place an IV for the injection.
If you have any other questions or if I can help in any other way, please let me know.
