I am a mom of three boys. They are 23, 19 and 10! My ten year old is autistic and has had a seizure disorder since he was 15 months old. I would be more than happy to speak with you regarding this. For now...Keep your head up, life does go on, and with modern medicine your daughter may be able to lead a very normal life.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause a lot of problems like this. If she is not eating enough good sources of protein then she may be deficient in an amino acid called Taurine that is a membrane stabilizer and helps keep minerals in the cells where they keep electrical impulses moving properly. You might consider looking for a Naturopathic doctor in the area who can test for these deficiencies.

Sincerely,

my son gets seizures as well and he is only 8 yrs old. I do get worried but he takes meds and we keep a track of his seizures. All u can do is to teach ur child how to live w/the disorder but let them know that it does not mean their world is ending. They can still live normal lives. I do wish u luck.

My son is 12 y/o. He was diagnosed w/seizure disorder 2 years ago. He has petit mal seizures. He is taking 600 ml of tegratol daily. The longest he's gone without a seizure is 8 months. You daughter can live a totally normal life with medication. We are praying that he outgrow the seizures. He see's his neurologist every 3 - 4 months and has an eeg every 6 months.

My son also has a benign brain tumor. The tumor is not related to the seizure at all. Two separte issues...

Good luck to you!

I have epilepsy and it wasn't diagnosed until i had gran mal seizures. Luckily i was at work when it happened and people were there to help me. Talking to my dr. i found out that i probably started having them when i was in high school, but didn't know it. Blank stares and zoning out were my symptoms back then. It is a really hard thing to find out but once you do at least you can figure out what needs to be done. I'm lucky enough to be on only one medication keppra. It is the best one i've been on i've tried a couple different ones that the side effects were horrible... but now that i've found the right medication for me everything is back to normal. My mom is so worried about me having another seizure and i'm sure you're feeling the same way she does. But I just want you to know that even if you have seizures most of the time you can lead a very normal life. I have a baby and another on the way and i've had healthy pregnancies with my first and now so far with my second. It might help your daughter to be able to talk to someone else who has seizures also. I know it helps when i talk about them. There is a website that you should look at and your daughter could talk to people on this website if she doesn't want to talk to a group in person. It is www.epilepsy.com I hope everything turns out and Be Strong. God bless ~ B.

I was diagnoised w/a seizure disorder, 2 weeks before I turned 16 years old. My 3 sibilings were ages 20,18 & 14 at the time with both my parents at home.
It was an adjustment for all of us. The main thing you want to focus on is finding the medication/dosage that controls her seizures. She will continue to have seizures untill the correct dosage for her body is found. This will be a trying time for everyone, because lets be honest seizures are scary to have/see. I would inform teachers/school/friends on the condition & how to deal w/it. Make taking medication daily a habit for her by perhaps starting the rest of the family on vitamins as well. This way she doesn't have to feel "different" having to take pills alone. www.eplipseyfoundation.org is a useful tool for everyone in your home to become informed. Let her know she is NOT alone, there are 100's of thousands of us in the world, some celebrities too ;). We all live normal lives just like everyone else. Me & my family made it just fine. Now I am a 32 year old married, mother of 2, who happens to take medication daily for epilepsy.

The only advise I can offer is that if she knows that she is going to have a seizure is to get somewhere where she can be more comfortable so she doesn't hurt herself.

I saw a show where a woman owned a pet bird, the bird could sense when she was going to have a seizure and would act erratic. That was a cue for her to lie down until it passed. If your daughter is not opposed, she might want to carry with her in a bag, a stuffed pillow that fits around her neck to reduce trauma to her head. Best of luck to you and your family.

I am not sure what type of seizure disorder she has but my daughter recently had a seizure. It was caused by a high rise in temperature. she is now prone to them for the rest of her life. It is scary! I can relate. I found my 3 year old on the bathroom floor unconscious foaming at the mouth shaking. We are fortunate that there are no effects from these type of febrile seizures. Is she on medication? Is it life long? My sister who is in the medical field alswys asks this with a seizure. What type of tests have been done? there are many that can be done to pinpoint the exact location of the seizure. A friend had a seizure at school and they were with Kaiser. Kaiser did mnimal testing. My sister told them to demand a pediatric neurologist first off. Second many brain scans can be done to detect. Many different medications can be used to subside the seizures too. Dr Ko in the south Bay is supposed to be very good. i am not sure if he treats teens. My sister recommends him all the time. i wish you the best and hope everything turns out ok for you.
