Small Dog-- Is There a Way to Litter Train?

Some days we are gone for long periods of time and we have a little dog who just cannot wait that long. She does tend to head toward the vinyl flooring which helps, I suppose. She is a miniature and I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience training an older dog to use a litter box? I actually started putting paper down and she seems to be using it a bit although she doesn't always hit her target.

What can I do next?

We live with several dachshunds. All are pee pad trained. We learned that the pet pee pad were too small for them and often missed. We buy the human bed liners from Rite Aid - they are about 20x36 inches- no more misses.

She sounds like a good dog, especially since she is trying to lessen the mess she leaves in the house. Try a larger pee pad, and put a litter box next to it.

I don't know that my dogs would use a box - but, my cats have all been known to the pee pads.

Good Luck

My yorkie uses a pee pad and we have tried to move her to other things and she doesn't use them (grass indoor patch) they just look better, but doesn't really do it for my dog. Whatever you decide do it soon.

I've seen kits at pet stores for small dog litter boxes. It might take some work but I bet you could. I found this link http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm on litter training small dogs. I googled "litter training small dogs"

I've not litter trained my dog, she's a large Collie. I do know though that dogs prefer to go on absorbent things. So if she is going on the paper you might be able to put the paper in the litter box first then up grade to litter. Maybe put one of her poops in the box too. I took my pups poop and put it someplace I Wanted her to poop to help her understand where to go. It really helped.

Good luck!

My brother-in-law and mother-in-law have litter trained their small dogs. I'm not sure how to do it, but it works for them.
