Can You Litter Box Train a Small Dog?

A coworker of mine is going to be giving us a little rat terrior in a couple of months & I was wondering if they can be litter box trained. It's gonna take me a little while to come up with a pet deposit, but she said that the mother is a size up from a chichuaha,(sp?), so I figured, why not? That way I won't have to take the dog outside to go potty. If you have any ideas, let me know!!!!

What can I do next?

There are also puppy pads you can just place on the floor, and train them to go on that.

Crate training a puppy really is the best way to go if you want to train it to go outside. And start it as soon as you get him/her.

There are lots of ways to do it. Just remember, that rat terriers are very active and will need to be taken outside daily to run around and get some fresh air anyways. Have fun, I've had dogs all my life and just love them!

My puppy rat terrier had fun tearing the puppy pads to shreds! However, I had an easy time crate training her. Look up how to do this.

Young rat terriers need lots of active play to keep them happy. They are easily trained to do tricks starting around 6 months of age. Take your puppy out for a romp in the AM, crate her while you're at work. If possible when she is very young, go home at lunch and take her out of crate to potty and then bee line it home after work.

If you do not have time to play and take a dog out on a regular basis, even if they do use a potty pad, please do NOT get a dog. Dogs are very social animals. They need lots of love and attention or they are not happy. If you want a nice pet that uses a litter box and is more independent, get a cat.

I have seen on Craigslist a box containing grass for dogs to go in. They say it's for people in apartments, potty training, & older dogs. I don't remember what it's called though.

I just wanted to say that I know it is possible to train a dog to use a litter box, but...I have a rat terrier and he is too big to fit in our litter box. He is also VERY active and could not stand to be left in the house. He runs after birds, squirrels, meter readers, etc. LOL. He is now about 5 1/2 years old and is slowing down, but still demands a lot of space to run and play. Best of luck to you.

I don't know about a litter box, but Petsmart and other places like that, sell potty mats. Basically, you train them to go on the potty mats and then throw them away.

Hi there! I actually DO have a client who trained her Italian Greyhound to use a wee wee pad in a litter box. I go walk her every day around lunch time and sometimes she has used it but other days she hasn't. It's worked out great for my client!
