What size would you buy for..

My son who just turned 3 who weighs exactly the same as his 5 year old sister (36.2 lbs) and is about 1-2 inches shorter than her. Basically her size. She is wearing size XS girls or a 5. This would be winter clothes for this coming school year.

What can I do next?

I go by the child's measurements, and the manufacturer's size charts. They do tend to vary quite a bit. I've never gone wrong using the child's largest measurement. For instance, one of my daughters has a large "girth" - the measurement that goes between the legs and over the shoulder, measuring the torso height, basically. So I size based upon the girth measurement and not her waist, hips or bust, which are small for her height. As kids grow, their measurements change so fast, so just take out your tape measure, measure his height, chest, waist, hips and girth, and then compare those to the manufacturer's size chart. He may wear a 5 in one manufacturer and a 4T in another.

Depends on his build, height, etc. It's best to try different brands on him to see what fits his body best. Sizing can vary greatly from brand to brand.

You need to go to Walmart and try clothes on him. That way you know what size Garanimals he is in.

Almost all stores carry this brand and they are usually mix and match. We bought a whole wardrobe of the pieces on year for my grandson. He is still wearing the shorts. The shirts and pants both got too short for comfort but the shorts still fit around the waist.

Once is a little older you can go to the boys section, not infants and toddlers, and try some size 4/5's on to see how they fit. But they are going to be narrower, longer in the inseam, and be more fitted to the leg. Infants and toddler clothes are made wider and have a different crotch length to make room for diapers and pull ups. Where the regular little boys clothes are made for only underwear under them, so the hiney area is more fitted to their body.

Any children's clothing store will be able to tell you the same thing. I said Walmart though because they are everywhere and carry the same things almost all the time. The smaller stores do carry a few things more in my opinion and less of the generic stuff. I can almost always find snow suits at the small stores but they do not carry them at the super centers.

I would check each manufacturer's size charts. My son is 35 pounds and pretty tall. I am already buying him regular boys XS shirts (not the 4Ts) -- they will last longer and need to fit less precisely than pants. He wears 4T bottoms now. But some 4T's are long, some are skinny, etc. so it's best to measure his height/weight and look a the charts (you can find them on each manufacturer's website fairly easily). My son typically goes up a size each year. So he went from 3T to 4T around springtime, so I'll buy his winter clothes in 4T also and can probably wait til spring to go up to the next size.

normally if my daughter is inbetween sizes i buy up, with jeans i can adjust them with the tabs in them to make them smaller on the waste, and i can hem them if too long, right now she is in a 5/6 short and a small/med shirt she is 3.5 and is tall (40in) and bigger (38 lbs) so the size of a 5 yr old. i normally buy what will get us through 2 seasons or for the most of two seasons.
