Hello mama's, I need tips on how to introduce the sippy cup to my 6 month-old baby without so much crying. I tried to give it to her but she cries so much it's breaking my heart... should I just keep giving it to her until she gets used to it? Thanks mom!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Mama's! I decided to get 3 different kinds of sippy cups to see which one she will like... I also decided not to rush it, I'll still give it to her, if she takes it, great, if not, well, she has a new toy! :0))

She's so young! She may be ready for it in a few months but most babies like and need to suck for at least the first 12 months.

I just set it out there as a toy and let them play with it. He'll catch on in his own time.

I don't think you should keep doing anything to your child that causes her to cry every time. Wait a month, offer again, repeat. :)

I'd probably wait even longer--maybe 2 or 3 months.

She is 6 months old, using a bottle or breast is not a bad thing.

Just give it to her when she is not hungry. Let her play with it and get used to it. She is still very young. There is time for her to learn how to use it. My kids never used one until they were over a year old. They needed to suck and nurse and that is what they did.

It may be that he's not ready for it. I don't remember exactly when we introduced it, but I think it was more like 9 mo. We took the valve out and put just a tiny bit of water in it so she immediately got the idea there was a drink inside. We put the valve in later.

Our son, was interested in taking sips from our cups, and for that matter aping much of our behavior. Could you show her how to use it?

Other ideas are to remove any valves that are inside and prevent drips. A faster flow is easier when they are getting used to the idea.

Also, try it in the bath, where it will be less messy.

Finally, try different models, some kids apparently hate one type, but really take to another.

Our little guy is either easy going about this, or we were first time lucky.

IMO I think 6mo is too early for most/all solids and for a sippy cup. There is no need to rush it, :-) I promise she will be able to drink out of one before she starts school :-)
Wait for a few more months and then see how she reacts.

Do you put something different then milk in it? With my little girl i put flavored water or water with just a hint of baby juice in it. If your doing this then just keep offereing it. I also would pretend to drink out of the cup and then tell her how yummy it was and then offer her a drink. She will eventually take it. just stick with it mama. It'll be fine. :D

Hi ~ I introduced my son to the Gerber Nuk sippy cup at 6 months; it's a sippy cup w/a latex or silicon mouth piece that almost like a nipple it also made the transition very easy for him from breastfeeding. It's this one in the picture http://www.gerber.com/AllStages/nutrition_and_feeding/sta...

Hi~
I just went through this with my dd. we started at 6 months (the pediatrician told us to). I was VERY laid back about it. I left the sippy around for her to get used to. may have offered a sip or so but did not expect much (no stress about it). around 9 months we encouraged more use of it but still primarily used a bottle. she would only drink 1-2 oz at time from a sippy. we tried a number of different sippies (and I tried to drink from them - they are NOT easy to drink from ). we introduced a straw cup (soft silicone straw). and she still only drank 2-3 oz at a time (but 6-8 oz from her bottle at a time). At 12 months we went "cold turkey" and in a weekend she used only her straw cup and now will drink 6-8 oz at a time without any issues. I think it helped that she was exposed to the cup for a long period of time.

good luck!!

You might want to wait a little while. I have two children and I think I didn't try until at least 9 months.
She also might just not like kind you bought. Some of the sippy cups are very hard to get anything out of and they are so much different than the bottle. The Nuby brand is more like a bottle. Of course, my daughter figured out how to make a mess with water and quickly figured out how to get her head wet with it. :)
hang in there! :)

We started with this one at 6 months and would only do about 2 oz of formula at dinner to practice. My son did not drink a bottle with dinner.

Then around 9 months I switched out two bottle for the sippy cup (he was doing for bottles a day)

Then a few months after that we went to playtex sippy cups like this...

http://www.amazon.com/Playtex-First-Sipster-Cup-oz/dp/B00...

Then at about 12 - 13 months we finally went to all sippy cups and no more bottles.

It did take me like 4 or 5 sippy cups before I discovered the munchkin ones with the soft tips (more like a bottle)

Once his teeth started going through the above playtex cups we moved to these

One thing our ped recommended was to get him to drink formula out of the cup first. Then once he will drink formula or milk out of the cup I could offer him water or other beverages from the sippy cup.

we use the Gerber Nuk sippy as well. They have different stages and we just got the first one. Started at about 6 months, and at 8 months he does really well, but he's only ever had water in it. i did this with all my kids, cups aren't for feeding, cups are for drinking. I give my son a bottle now that we can't BF and I feed my son, once the bottle is gone, so if the formula and at that point most of his dietary needs will need to be met with actual food and not liquid, so I've just never encouraged my kids to use cups the same way they do bottles. I've also never had any trouble weaning any of them off the bottle between 11 months and that first birthday.

I would suggest making sure your little one isn't starving and just offer the cup and let her play and make a mess with it, she'll get the hang of it.
